I don’t know how historically accurate it is, but I enjoyed it.

    Somewhere in Queens

Enjoyed this movie about NY Queens Italian family.

Well crafted characters and emotional pull to the storyline

    Parallel Mothers
From Pedro Almodovar - about 2 mothers and babies swapped at birth, and the continuing pain from the spanish civil war.
Penelope Cruz is still pretty damn hot and puts in a good performance. The film looks good.
But I just found that the challenges the main characters faced were resolved a little too easily and quickly - I half expected "...and they lived happily ever after."

Worth a look, beautiful europeans, nice sets and villages. They even smoked which isn't allowed much these days. I find Almodovar films have a sort of understated eroticness running (unintentionally(?)) thru them. Maybes its just that Cruz gives me the horn.
    I'll give it a 7/10

Yes the evolving menace, one of many great scenes contrasting with the final coin toss.

    One long, tedious fight scene.

4 movies and 1 BBC TV series.

    To Catch a Killer

    Sisu

    No Hard Feelings

    Kandahar https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kandahar_2023

    Blue Lights https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/blue_lights/s01

    The reviews…….

For me, To Catch A Killer was the best of all 4 movies. Rotten tomatoes doesn’t rate it well. Fvck them.

Sisu was interesting and bit far-fetched. I did enjoy it. Looper had a better review on the previous page.

No Hard Feelings started off well but towards the end it got serious and not as fun. Exiting the water (skinny dipping) Jennifer Lawrence takes off chasing after her stolen clothes, completely nude. That is a good-looking woman.

Kandahar. I had to turn it off.

I recently finished Blue Lights. Good show.

Just saw the new Indiana Jones.

Usual action-packed romp with Mads Mikkelsen as the villain.

    Some nice CGI.

    Comfortable 7/10.

    Separate Tables (Movie, 1958)

So on reading that David Niven was the first man to complete the James Bond/Oscar double (I always thought that was Connery with The Untouchables), I decided to download this. It's based on two one-act plays by Terrence Rattigan (playwright of The Winslow Boy).

Niven was presenting at the Oscars and then found himself receiving the Best Actor gong.

The film is set in a retirement hotel in Bournemouth, and Niven plays a caddish charlatan who calls himself Major Pollock, but his self made reputation unravels when he is caught in some cinema shenanigans.

I have to say, having grown up seeing Niven play dashing leading men or big hearted supporting characters, it was a surprise to see him in this role, and he absolutely nailed it.

I found it an entertaining piece, with intertwined stories featuring Deborah Kerr, Rita Hayworth, Burt Lancaster and Rod Taylor.

An enthralling black and white piece.

    8/10

P.S. I have a feeling this was John Cleese's inspiration for Fawlty Towers, even though it's not a comedy

    Beau is Afraid

This feels like the kind of movie I could really have got into 10 years ago, and starring one of my favourite actors Joaquin Phoenix, but it left me less than tepid. I don't know if I have got older and more conventional or if avant garde movies have gone downhill. 3 fookin hours long this was too, so I think I deserve a medal for sticking with it to the finishing line

    4/10

    Daliland

I like a bit of high-brow culture now and again but an artist biography movie usually means a perve at some nude models. By one hour in all that had been shown was the naked arse of a bloke that Dali referred to as his Angel. I thought my patience had paid off when a later scene opened with full frontal nudity of a leggy blonde. But the cheer died in my throat as the model spoke to reveal that 'she' was an 'it' of indeterminate pronouns

This woke embargo on ladies tits and bits on TV and movies is starting to wear a tad thin.

    4/10

    Love and Monsters

This was an entertaining genre mash-up from 2020. Post apocalytic on-foot road movie in the vein like The Last Of Us but with a gently comedic tone, giant radioactive insects and disarmingly authentic emotional hooks. Worth a watch if you missed it 3 years ago.

    7.5/10

1 out of 3 for my July movies so far

    A Small Fortune 2021

This has all the ingredients for a classic Coen brothers style crime caper with a unique east coast of Canada landscape

Unfortunately the actors and actresses don't quite bring sufficient weight to the roles to ground it effectively but still a diverting 90 minutes

    7/10

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One

Went to see it at the flicker pictures and paid for the 4DX.

A brilliant action movie and the 4DX is a hoot (I turned the water off though).

It's 160 minutes but it doesn't seem that long (as long as you have a piss before you go in!).

Usual amazing stunt work, CGI, car chases, suspense.

Absolute ripper of a movie and well worth seeing on the big screen.

    9/10

My trip back to Thailand provided an assortment of films that failed to keep me interested and failed to put me to sleep.

The worst of the bunch were the John Wick films, utter crap!

    Oppenheimer.

Saw on IMAX, not needed but improved the experience.

A stunning character piece full of political intrigue. Nolan's direction is exceptional, but don't expect an explosion-filled action movie, it ain't that.

Amazing cast, hard to pick a standout, although if Matt Damon wants to make another Bourne movie, it should probably be called The Bourne Weight Loss Program.

Really enjoyed it and three hours went past quickly.

    The Midnight Meat Train (2008).

Vinnie Jones is a serial killer, Bradley Cooper is an increasingly unhinged photographer who discovers him.

    Gruesome, bloody movie, great fun.

He's going to be so happy there's a prequel series coming called "The Continental".

    And it's got Mel Gibson.
