Don't bother with Clint Eastwood's latest Cry Macho, unless you are a sobby girly type,(joking a little bit) Clint has lost that charisma he had just 10 years ago as far as an actor goes, he seems robotic and articulated, he looks like he's acting as do the others.

    The Last Duel

I enjoyed this medieval tale of a woman scorned and the knights duking it out. I had trepidations of getting a sore stomach based on warnings of it being a #metoo gender politics festival but it was not bad at all really in this regard.

The main actors mostly do well to reign in there merkin accents although Matt Damon doesn't make much effort.

    8/10

Although even Damon was not as dreadful as Denzel Washington, as the lead, in The Tragedy of MacBeth. I really did my politically dutiful best to enjoy MacBeth in the name of #BlackLivesMatter but could the bloke not try to reign in his transatlantic drawl just a smidgen out of respect for the bard?

I had to watch the magnificent 2015 version the following night to rinse the awful memory from my mind.

    5/10

I am glad the Last Duel flags up at the beginning that it is a true story, as that adds to the drama.

After reading that, I was assuming I was watching a heavily embellished dramatisation of an ancient tale. But the Wikipedia account of the actual story of the knight in question suggests that the movie is accurate in a detailed way, even the details of the chivalric showdown at the end.

I wish I had known that before watching.

    American Honey 2016

My dose of American Honey hooch on Monday put me in mind of the movie of the same name that has been sitting on my hard drive for a couple of years.

It turned out to be an enjoyable moody reflective piece. It has a similar vibe to Nomadland but is following a young girl on the road rather than a wrinkly Frances McDormand on a trip through Murika's seamy underbelly.

The lead Sasha Lane has a magnetic screen presence despite her skillfully understated performance.

    8/10

    Instant Family 2018

This is a fun paced comedy drama but deals with the weighty themes of fostering and adoption in a satisfying and heart-felt manner.

Some of the comedy lines are top shelf. Thoroughly enjoyable and I can go as high as a generous

    8.3/10

although maybe I was just in the right mood for it

I really enjoyed it. The Rashomon storyline split into 3 different perspectives worked really well.

My favourte line was when the bloke from Star Wars said something about "putting his needle in" when he done the deed.

Whatshisname who played the shit Batman is rarely seen, but was also very good in this.
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.

    House of Gucci

    Bellisimo, bravo.

A grand, operatic tale of colourful characters.

I did not know the story even though it is true. Probably more fun if you don't google up the story before watching if you are not familiar.

Great performances from every actor in the top notch cast, including Jared Leto as the feckless cousin. Pacino still has his rage-power mojo on the big screen. Impressive at 80 years old. He looks in rude health.

    8.7/10

    Turning Red

I'm 50+ years old now and for a reason I still watch Disney films which I find myself kinda freaking weird because I still watch Disney films at this age.
Good movie (the critics hate it but not me) great characters and comedy.
    7.5/10
Feel free to bash me for still watching Disney films at this age.

    The Batman

I struggle with superhero movies these days but the 3 hour long Batman was a breeze.

Felt like a more classically engaging character-driven noir-drama than the plastic-fantastic action-scene marathons that we are used to or the Marvel comedy shows.

Ant will approve of the new Dodge Charger Batmobile I am sure

    Watched 'Uncharted' yesterday

It tries very hard to be a latter-day 'Raiders' but fails in almost every department, except for the opening it leaves at the end for the sequel.

It's not a bad movie at all, it just isn' that good . . .

    Characters are not as fleshed-out as they need to be;

    Hat: 7/10
    Mrs Hat: 6/10
    Youngest Hat: 5/10
    Youngest Hat's friend: 6/10

^ Saw it at the flicks. Just a big CGI bash with little story.

The Lost City seems to be a new Romancing the Stone.

It seems its the Hollywood theme at the moment then.

I'm going to watch this today. If I don't report back, I'm dead from the excitement.

PEDDAPURAM-A 42-year-old died from cardiac arrest while watching the newly released ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ in Peddapuram city of Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district. According to India Today, the victim, Lakshmireddy Srinu, and his brother went to a cinema to watch Avatar 2 in Peddapuram. While watching the film, Srinu collapsed. His younger brother Raju instantly took him to Peddapuram Government Hospital, where doctors pronounced him brought dead. Previously, a 42-year-old man in Taiwan also died of a cardiac arrest in the middle of the film Avatar, released in 2010, as per AFP.
It is pertinent to mention that the man had a history of high blood pressure. According to the doctor who checked him, “over-excitement from watching the movie” triggered his symptoms.

"Moment of Contact".... Probably the first compelling recounting of possible alien beings. This movie was well done, and gets one thinking. The eye witness interviews seem genuine.

Avatar 2 in 3D was simply stunning - the attention to detail is amazing.

Rattles along nicely but have a piss before you go in. So many muppets popping out after a couple of hours.

    Banshees of Inisheeran

This is either love or hate movie.
I really enjoyed it - its funny, sad and a bit unhinged, and head-scratching.
    It looks really good too.
I'd love to have a few pints at that pub too.

Beautiful scenery and atmosphere but the producers are having a bit of a self-congratulatory wank and resting on their lazy laurels by leaving us with no resolution to the thought-provoking conflict they set up

A 2nd flypast for Top Gun on the big screen was a good excuse to pull down the Crimbo decos only 2 days late, to make room for the unraveling of the screen.

A movie this bolloxy awesome needs a minimum of 4 viewings

Senorita likes Tom Cruise but I thought I noticed a slight glazing of her eyes during my excited and lengthy explanation of the technical differences and comparative history of the F-14 and F/A-18 using 1/72 scale models (with moving swing wings and tail hooks) for illustration

I have more or less stopped watching newer Hollywood movies.

Dialog is mostly shit compared to ....years back.

And when you can cast nothings like, let's say Steve Carrel, you aren't exactly looking for a quality product.

    Agreed, an utter nebbish.

Aside from Avatar, most movies we watched recently were not Hollywood-born.

    Jesus Revolution

First time I have really learned anything about the strange cultural phenomenon of long-haired left-wing anarcho-hippies spawning 60's Jesus freaks, which is an odd idea when you think about the politics of the respective movements.

I wish I had realised it was a true story when I started watching it. I try not to read too much about movies before I watch them.

    Quite a lot of fun.

I was anticipating something a bit more gritty and realistic from the online descriptions of this 'hard-bitten Finn' vs a pack of evil kitchen Nazis tale

It was quite good fun though in a Tarantino-esque OOT splatter-fest kind of way

    6.8/10

The tank is a fakey fakey cold war Russian T-55 which is a shame when there are plenty of fully working Panzer IVs and StuG IVs still rattling around.

But for a slightly less serious film than I was expecting I guess that is par for the production-values course
