Greed. (2020).
Steve Coogan stars in a comedy pastiche of "Topshop" business mogul Philip Green. Very funny in parts, unsubtle humour to match the vulgar displays of ostentatious wealth on show.
Lots of insider jokes and info: How much to rent 'stars' like Elton John, Tom Jones, etc, for private parties. How much Bono welches on tax payments, et al.
The film gets into the factories in Sri Lanka, showing the conditions and lives of sweat shop workers producing the economic miracles of people like Green and co.
Pretty good, gets a bit sanctimonious, but it's an enjoyable vehicle for Coogan who is on top form in this outing. 7.5/10 for me.
The Assistant
Watched this because the lead is Julia Garner, who was excellent in 'The Americans' and 'Ozark'.
It's the story of a young woman who is an office skivvy for a movie producer.
It's suggested that the producer uses his position to get laid.
Reviews suggest this film is a biting indictment of...etc..etc...
Absolutely nothing of note happens in this movie.
I suggest you don't bother.
2/10
On The Beach - 1959 directed by Stanley Kramer starring Gregory Peck, Ava Garner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.
Thought I'd give this oldie a whirl again in light of our present circumstances. A big disappointment. The film was horribly miscast with the exception of Gregory Peck. Did they even have a dialogue coach for the yanks speaking with Aussie accents? Poor script, overlong with little drama given the gravitas of the subject matter. Really dismal acting performances by Gardner and Perkins.

Gregory Peck can never be miscast
Not a lot of decent movies on the in-flight from Lufthansa but under the classics they had: "The Philadelphia Story", a B&W from 1940 with Cary Grant, James Stewart, and Katherine Hepburn. This is a romantic comedy that is just too lovely for words....thoroughly enjoyable and more like theatre than film.
Just wish they could still make movies like this with great dialogue and innuendo without having to thrust special effects, sex and/or violence into the face.
I started watching Star Wars in chrono..chonologi... Number order. The first couple were shit. Then they started explaining the characters I know like Darth Vader and stuff which was good. Solo was ok, Rogue One was shit for the first half but great 2nd half, no idea who any of them were though. Next up is episode 4 I think which is the old one.
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic
The Invisible Man
Good fun and entertaining re-imagining of a classic (which I have never seen)
7.2/10
Given the vaguely 'Handmaids Tale' reminiscent theme of a woman struggling to escape from a terrifying controlling relationship with an (invisible) male I would have enjoyed it slightly more if they had chosen someone other than Elizabeth Moss.
She is a good actress. Her breakout role turning the tables on 1960s sexism in Mad Men was great.
But the rabid wallowing nonsense that was The Handmaids Tale was woeful.
Now, after enduring the entire season 1 of that show, whenever I watch her in a movie I can feel myself getting triggered and I find myself scrutinising the content of the film for subliminal hysterical feminism themes.
Sometimes I worry that I might be imagining rabid subliminal feminist themes even where they do not really exist.
The other issue is that she is not really cute enough to be the object of obsession of a Tony Stark character.
she was fantastic in "The Handmaids Tale", one of the best underated show of the decade
Yeah, as long as she remembers her place. After all, she's not that fit.
The Nightingale
Unflinchingly brutal depiction of life during Australia's darkest period of colonial history on Tasmania.
I think I would have done the end a bit differently but the story is compellingly told.
7.85/10
365 days.
as bad as the reviews say it is.
Rambo Last Blood
Refreshing lack of moral ambiguity.
Good guys. Bad guys. Sex. Drugs. White knight. Tragedy. Revenge. Splattered Mexicans by the truckload in the face-off finale and all wrapped up inside 100 minutes.
7.5/10

If you liked "Moon", you'll like this.
A scientist is asked to build an AI that allows people to spend time with their recently dead loved ones before their "signal" expires, but he uses his late wife as the model. Much chaos ensues. Sort of.
Capone
I settled in for a good gangster film and got Tom Hardy overacting and going full retard in the final, diaper wearing, neurosyphilitic year of Al Capones life.
Give it a miss.
