    Life is Sweet ( 1990 )

Another Timothy Spall movie, but this time with several of my other favorite actors like , Jim Broadbent , Alison Steadman and David Thewlis. For me this has every thing you have come to expect from a Mike Leigh movie. the synopsis say's it all , its a joy to watch.

Director Mike Leigh escapes the confines of direct-to-television films with this incredibly bittersweet slice-of-life comedy about a blue-collar family living in modern-day England. Wendy (Alison Steadman) and Andy (Jim Broadbent) are a good-natured couple with two daughters, Nicola (Jane Horrocks) and Natalie (Claire Skinner). As different as two sisters could possibly be, Natalie is jovial and optimistic, while Nicola is a discontented cynic with contempt for everything she encounters. When Andy breaks his foot and strikes upon the idea to buy a hot dog van, Wendy is reminded of what she loves--and loathes--about her husband. Gradually, Nicola is revealed to have a potentially dangerous eating disorder, and by the time tensions between the sisters erupt, Wendy must gather all her strength to keep the family together. With LIFE IS SWEET, Leigh has pulled off a remarkable feat: He has made a film that is at once a raucous comedy, a poignant drama, and a heartfelt tearjerker, setting the standard for all slice-of-life films that follow. In addition to the spot-on performances of Steadman, Broadbent, Horrocks, and Skinner, Leigh regulars David Thewlis and Timothy Spall appear to add even greater depth--and comic relief--to the proceedings.

Christ, I don't know if the movie was bad or Leonardo is just such a turd I can't stand to watch him. Ben Kingsley was good in this psychological thriller, but I can't say anything else positive about it. I should have downloaded this one and not paid admission.

For a good story, excellent acting, 'An Education' is something to savour. A (albeit mature) schoolgirl is seduced by an older man, who also manages to convince her parents at the same time that he's a great guy. Lot of good performances here, not least of which from Alfred Molina as the girl's father.

    Currently watching High kick girl.

Synopsis: Kei (Rina Takeda) joins a karate dojo and quickly proves herself to be the most skilled fighter amongst all her male peers. However, her sensei Matsumura still refuses to give her the coveted black belt until she learns all the kata (forms). Too impatient to wait any longer, Kei hastily joins a fighting group called the Destroyers. The Destroyers don’t care about anything but fighting and earning money, and this suits Kei just fine. But when she finds out their true purpose — to destroy Matsumura — she decides she must do whatever it takes to put a stop to them.

I actually agree with you on this one Butterfly. It probably means I need to watch it again.

Quite a few famous actors in it, and a few very funny scenes where Sarah Mitchel (Buffy) talked about the merits of doing Porn when she was a teenager. Everybody wants to be in porn. From the same director as Donnie Darko, great music from Moby.

California is at the epicenter of a political and environmental disaster that threatens to destroy the world in this ambitious fusion of comedy, drama, dystopia science fiction, and music. In the year 2005, a nuclear attack wipes out part of the state of Texas, and three years later America is a virtual police state, with the government taking control of nearly every part of people's lives, supposedly for their own good. A German firm has found a way to generate energy using seawater, but both public and private concerns are desperate to prevent the new technology from being introduced in the gasoline-starved United States. A Marxist underground based on the West Coast is determined to bring down the federal government through violent revolution. In this midst of this chaos, we follow a number of stories that continually return to three principle characters. Boxer Santaros is an actor famous for his role in action films; he's trying to secure financing for a new project, but reality keeps mirroring the events in his script and he struggles to hold on to his identity following a bout with amnesia. Krysta Now is a porn star who is reinventing herself as a television pundit offering her views on politics, contemporary culture, and teenage sex. And Roland Taverner is an L.A. police officer whose identity has mysteriously split in two and he struggles to track down his other half.

    The Reeds.

A weekend boating trip through the Norfolk Broads becomes a terrifying, deadly ordeal for six 20-something year old friends.
Aboard the Corsair Star, a small cruiser rented from the local marina operator, the boating party loses its bearings and cuts through the vast reedy tidewater in search of the main channel. After the first casualty by a freak accident, the boat runs aground.
god, another shocking bad movie which is about as shit as Triangle and sort of ends the same. a total mash up and the story goes this way and that, with dead people coming back to life. dont bother with this piece of worthless tripe.

    Bangkok Adrenaline

one of the most horrendous English language films made in Thailand i have ever seen. terrible acting and an even worse plot. the film wouldn't of got very far if it wasn't for the choreographers Gwion Jacob Miles and Daniel O’Neill who both stared in the movie too.

the DVD was released in UK a few days ago so all other releases before March 22nd have been dubbed into Thai.

found some RS links on a Romanian forum as i don't use torrents. For me, its a 3/10

Descent 2 - picks up where the last one ended. (yank version) Basically rescue team is sent down to find the missing ladies in the unknown cavern system with aid of the one who made it out. Pretty good, but will only give it a 6 because ending was pretty sh*te!

Watched 'How to Train Your Dragon' with my kids today.

A story about a village of Vikings (with Scottish accents - apart from the teens who spoke 'merican' strangely enough). It seems they never took the time to try and understand their enemies (dragons).

After 98 minutes of a really well done movie they did so and they all lived happily ever after in Viking-dragon harmony.

Usually when watching computer animated movies these days I fall asleep a couple of times once the nachos and cheese are finished, but I actually enjoyed this one.

Due to financial constraints (I gave the kids the option of 3D or 2D with more nachos and cheese) so we saw the 2D version, but I imagine the 3D thing will probably detract from the story anyway, as it has done with a few other movies I have seen at the cinema over the past year.

    4/5

3D is pointless. Thanks for the review, my kid loves dragons so maybe I'll let him drag me to this one.

Inglorious Basterds - Great film. Knew from the opening or 'Chapter 1' as Tarrantino called it, it was gonna be a corker..the so called 'Jew Hunter', plays his part to perfection, Brad Pitt's character is pretty amusing - only gripe with the whole movie is the weird choice to have Mike Myers play an English Captain, he can't seem to shake off the Austin Powers accent..sounds shit.

Didn't really enjoy it that much, apart from the performance of the German Jew Hunter. The first chapter was excellent, but went downhill fast after that in my opinion.

For me, Brad Pitt was very average.

Agree with you on Mike Myers. He was shit.

One for the Tarrantino fans only I reckon (and I used to be one)

An insecure professional wife suspects her husband is cheating on her and hires an attractive young high-so call girl to see if she can bait him into a fling, in New York. Halfway through the movie things go awry (good for the guys to watch). The movie takes some twists that are unexpected and ends with the wife finding out something about herself she never knew.

    8/10

This is a Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) special. He has a wicked sense of humour and it really comes through in this movie.
Reno is superb as the laconic hitman, and a young Natalie Portman does a great job, but this is Gary Oldman's movie - him and Besson are great buddies.
He overplays the part so well as a drugged up, hyper and crooked cop and steals the movie.
I think this is Besson's best film ever, and it's one I've watched over and over because of its sheer entertainment value.
^^ I am an avid fan of both Luc Besson and Gary Oldman, and of this movie in particular. I too watch it over and over again: I keep spare CDs of 'The Professional' just for backup. Natalie as the young girl does an outstanding job, especially considering the star quality she's working with. A superb 'Keeper'!

It's ironic that we were just discussing Besson when along comes a Russian movie which in my mind is obviously influenced by his style of direction.

    It's called (in Russian)
    Goryachie novosti

Which translates to "News Makers" I believe. The pirate DVD I watched had English subtitles (not the Thai variety I might add!).

Apparently it's a Russian remake of a Hong Kong movie called "Breaking News".

If you can get over the foreign language bit (and it is quite easy because a lot of the action scenes have no dialogue), you'll find a very enjoyable cops and robbers movie with a twist or two.

Worth watching if you like Besson.

I just saw it with my boy as well, very good movie. I went the 3d,was worth it IMO. The only downer was I managed to kick over my sons box of pop corn and he was pissed with me the rest of the film...Typically I carried everything in myself 2 pop corn, big coke, water, 3d glasses, ticket stubs....and he strolled in like a lord....

    Crazy Heart.

The harder the life the sweeter the song.

Jeff Bridges best role ever as an alcoholic singer/songwriter who has seen better days travels the road playing small bars.

Not really into C&W but the soundtrack is great, great lyrics as well.

Not sure if this belongs in a movie thread, but given the production values HBO's "Pacific" could count as "film." Just wanted to point out that having watched two episodes of the HBO Asia version I was surprised to find that some scenes of violence, and not in every case extreme violence, have been cut. Comparably harsh scenes in HBO dramas such as Band of Brothers and True Blood, not to mention scenes from violent movies on HBO and Max, are left intact, so I am very curious as to what is going on. My wife thinks it has something to do with not offending Japanese sensibilities, but I am not sure that explains it. Anyone else notice?
