I just watched Stingray Sam, it was pretty original, and worth a look, a bit annoying as it is divided up over 1 hour into 10 minute type of series bits, but some of the music is good, and the idea behind it is quite fresh...it won't be for everyone, but what is an hour out of your life!

Saw Avatar on opening day at Imax. I went in with high expectations and wasn't let down. The special effects were amazing and I enjoyed the story line: We humans have killed our own planet and have moved on to others with little consideration indigenous people or their environment. Greed again. The film reminds me of how we screwed our American Indians back in the states. This is a film you really need to see on the big screen to appreciate the art behind the animation.

Not really a new movie, but a new download, I actually thought that it was in B&W, but was surprised it was in colour...must have been the old TV we had whenn I first watched it.

A classic, one of the best movies ever made, never be scared of your teachers, revenge is sweet...what else...a pretty damn good movie! Malcolm Mac Dowell, at jhis early best, and later in No. ! Gangster. There are very few movies that come up to this measure.

Saw AVATAR at the IMAX yesterday. It's awesome.

I didn't see at IMAX, but I had a similar reaction. Folks in the audience were oohhing and ahhing, the visuals are that good. The story was somewhat trite, but still entertaining.

But this one's all about the 3D visuals, which were spell-bindingly beautiful. I was going in with low expectations, as I'm not a huge fan of CGI, but this movie swept me off my feet with it's trippy 3D creations. I wouldn't have minded just 2.5 hours of simply exploring the planet Pandora.

Avatar deserves the superlatives and then some. Go see it in 3D, it's an experience. Awesome indeed.

Went to see Avatar yesterday, had not read anything about it or watched any trailer etc, it was just the movie that was on at the time I decided to go to the cinema, so I had no idea what to expect.

Fucking great movie, loved it, and I thought that Neytiri was quite sexy in a strange type of way. MUST be seen on the big screen to appreciate fully.

First, not naming names, but this movie review thread has been blissfully free so far of the infantile shit-slinging, petty personal vendettas, and general incivility that make much of Teak Door so tedious. I wonder if we could leave that crap out, at least in this thread.

To Avatar- haven't seen it yet, in part due to lack of time, but mainly because I don't go for CGI/effects-driven films, and I find Cameron movies heavy-handed and ponderous in the extreme, not to mention overlong. I might go see it anyway, but will definitely have to be in the mood, so to speak. Anyway, I read an interesting critique of Avatar this morning, and thought I would share it. Please note that this is not my opinion, but it sounds plausible given the similarities of Avatar with other films, such as Dances With Wolves (which I am slightly embarrassed to admit I pretty much enjoyed the first time):

Annalee Newitz writes that "[w]hether Avatar is racist is a matter of debate," but it isn't: the film is racist. Its fundamental narrative logic is racist: it transposes the cultural politics of Westerns (in which the Native Americans are animists who belong to a more primitive race) onto an interplanetary conflict and then assuages the white guilt that accompanies acts of racial and cultural genocide by having a white man save the noble savages (who are also racists). Unlike King Kong—which wrestled with the racial logic of the original—Avatar reproduces the racist logic of its source material. This is not to say the film is not also a condemnation of American imperialism or disastrous environmental policies, because it's that too.

Saw Avatar his afternoon at the big screen. It was ok but I generally had the impression I was watching a very well drawn cartoon. The plot is fairly naff but the scenery and action are well done. It probably needs to be seen in 3D to be properly appreciated.

You just summed up the better reviews I've been hearing. Those of you who have seen it, at what point would you recommend a pee break? A few beers might really enhance my enjoyment, like beer goggles for movies. As far as Avatar being "racist", it would be hard to argue otherwise with anyone who looks for that sort of thing in comics and then takes it seriously when it's found.

Although "speciesist" might be a better term, both for the movie and for anyone who would reduce the Pandorans' plight to a mere metaphor for what happened to the Arapaho et. al..

So, to call the film racist is to be speciesist in the extreme. Not to mention the sackful o' hammers rattling in the background.

Better to rig up a coleostomy bag or whatever than break the illusion with a piss break if you see it in 3D. If you don't, piss whenever you like. The film is pretty much equally "happening" at any given moment.

When they turned back after an injury following a fall of stone, they have launched a deadly raid: Toni Kurz died the last three meters above the rescuers, a node is stuck in the hook . His last words were: "Ich kann nicht mehr" (I can no more).

Great movie but very sad end. Just reminds us how little we are against nature.

I love that it is ALWAYS "American imperialism" and not imperialism in general. I didn't look at the Na'vi as being a primitive race. In fact, I found them to be superior to humans both physically and spiritually. Sulley said in the film that the Na'vi wouldn't leave because they rejected the temptations we offered. His world is dead and they are ready to destroy another without learning anything. Our god is greed. I read online that Na'vi means prophet in Hebrew. Maybe the James Cameron is giving us a glimpse of our future.

It reminded me more of "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" than "Dances with Wolves".
