^ you should, Christian Bale is magnificent in them
Saw another Christian Bale movie, Empire of the Sun, he was the child actor then
never liked that movie, despite the impressive scenes
Just watched Harsh Times with Christian Bale in it. Been reviewed a page or so back so it just an echo of "its OK".
I like Christian Bale even though he's been in some dodgy films he always makes a good case for himself even though he was born in Wales
I agree with MtD, it was ok, but a bit hard to follow, and the constant rewinding is really annoyingQuote:

I caught the last hour of No Country for Old Men on TV a couple of weeks back, and I'm going to get the whole thing. Very dark, atmospheric Cohen brothers movie from 2007. Four Academy Awards.

Misguided souls will tell you that No Country for Old Men is out for blood, focused on vengeance and unconcerned with the larger world outside a standard-issue suspense plot. Those people, of course, are deaf, dumb and blind to anything that isn't spelled out between commercials on dying TV networks. Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel is an indisputably great movie, at this point the year's very best. Set in 1980 in West Texas, where the chase is on for stolen drug money, the film — a new career peak for the Coen brothers, who share writing and directing credits — is a literate meditation on America's bloodlust for the easy fix. It's also as entertaining as hell, which tends to rile up elitists.
Whoops. I've just noticed that you all discussed this 20-30 pages back. :sheep:
You didn't mention the ending. I think that was a whole different thread.
Double Dagger
Within the first minute of the opening scene you can tell this is going to be a poor film. Cliche shots of Hollywood that could be stock film, rubbish music and then the acting, urrgh.
Its a heist movie by some geezer called Pablo Veliz. Im guessing he's tring to make a Reservoir Dogs-esque movie as after about 15 minutes I started to hit the skip button. The acting is shockingly poor, dialogue pathetic and poorly delivered.
This was another IP torrents well seeded pre-release so Ive learnt my lesson after this and The Mutant Chronicles.
Im guessing he was trying to make a poor mans Reservoir Dogs and he succeeded. A very poor, homeless, destitute, alcoholic and desperate poor mans Res Dogs.
An absolute stinker, download at your peril.
Damn! I'll definitely give it another go next week.Quote:

Constantine
Forgettable but mildly entertaining CG-rendered fantasy about the biblical forces of good and evil. Keanu Reeves tries hard to be some kind of jaded, re-born character seeking absolution for his sins to avoid going to hell by exorcising demons, but is unconvincing.
Feels a bit like rehash of the Matrix and Sin City with a dash of the Golden Child.
They should have used somebody like Harvey Keitel to develop the role given to Reeves. Could have helped to provide some perspective.
Peter Stormare as the Devil in a white suit is the only acting that leaves a lasting impression.

Batman is DC, not Marvel!! :twak:Quote:

rather watch a western.
Batmans not technically a super-hero. Thats the attraction to him for a lot of fans, he hasnt got any special power, he cant fly like Superman or spin webs etc like Spiderman he's just a human not superhuman in any way.
All that Adam West bollox and all the other Batman movies are about as far away from the true Batman fanboys idea of it as you can get. Tim Burton came close to appeasing the diehards but Nolans grabbed them by the ball and said "This is Batman" and a lot of them agree. Some of the graphic novels are pretty dark gothic stuff.
Frank Miller's 'Dark Knight Returns' was a fantastic graphic novel.
I'd rather shave me nadsQuote:

American prison drama about a guy who accidentally kills an intruder, and then suffers the harsh realities of prison life. Another con ( Val Kilmer ) becomes his mentor and helps him get back to his lovely fiance below.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo
Never seen the first one and a lot of people here said its good. I thought it was pretty weak myself. The 2 guys in it are OK and seem to work OK together just not many laughs in it for me. First 10-15 mins were showing signs of promise but after that it wasnt up to much. I think they're making a 3rd.
Mamma Mia
This is the film version of the Abba musical. Starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan as you have never seen them before.
An amusing story built around the lyrics of some of Abba's famous songs. It is entertaining, amusing, very light and a tad nostalgic. Streep shines in this. Brosnan looks more like Roger Moore every time I see him.
7/10 (of which one is for Brosnan's outfit in the closing scenes)
The great debaters. 2007
Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker.
durian fan reviewd this a few pages back, I loved it quite a bit more than he did I think.
Based on the trues story of a negro college debate team trained by their English tutor (Washington) that went unbeaten for over 10 years.
Set in Texas in 1935, news of their success travels fast and the story focuses on their acceptance into white colleges for competition.
Greta uplifting ending when they eventually receive an invite to Harvard for a major debate.
Felt a lot better after watching it than I did beforehand, lots of very strong performances and beautifully directed. A big cut above the cliched underdog does good story.

Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Brendon Frazier is the actor that is well known in the film.
Good movie. The wife enjoyed it.
I liked the original 1959 version with Pat Boone and Gertrude the duck better. :)
Chop Shop
Story of a young orphan Latino street kid Alejandro. Hes 10 or 12 years old and hustling to stay alive in Queens, New York. He gets a job in a car repair shop in a junkyard where they let him stay.
Its shot documentary style so theres no music just the tough looking gritty area its shot in. The kid does well to carry the film as hes only a nipper and hes the major focus with a few side characters as well. A watchable story of a kid immigrant trying to make his way in the US.

We Own the Night (2007)
Despite an impressive cast, and a promising beginning, the movie was slow and mostly boring, with very average acting
no originality, and could have just been a TV episode
Oldboy (2003) (Korea)
Oh-Daesu is in imprisoned. He has a bed, a bathroom, and four walls. Every few weeks they gas him, he passes out, and they clean his "cell". He gets all his information from the tv - lots of trivial stuff along with the news. But he doesn't know who has imprisoned him, and, more importantly, he doesn't know why. After 15 years, he is released. Upon his release, he befriends a famous sushi chef, Mido. She is quite young and the most famous sushi chef in Korea. Anyway, eventually the person who imprisoned Oh-Daesu reveals himself, and tells him that he has 5 days to figure out who he is, and why he was imprisoned. If he doesn't, then this person will kill Mido. Thus begins his quest to find his captor, and uncover the disturbing secret of why he was imprisoned, as well as why he was released.
This is probably the most famous movie to ever come out of Korea. It might be a shithole of a country, but some of their movies are just fantastic. Director Park Chan-Wook makes a triumph of a movie, filmed with style and verve, along with some of the most violent scenes I've ever seen. This is the second movie in Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance Trilogy (I'll review the other two later), and although it's confusing as hell at times, its better than most revenge films that come out of Hollywood.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary's_Baby_(film)
A classic Polanski film that I hadn't watched in 10 years but rewatched last night. Still undoubtedly a masterpiece. Polanksi's masterful direction combined with Mia Farrow's fantastic lead and a strong supporting cast including John Cassavetes as her husband Guy brings what might otherwise seem an absurd story to life.Quote:
Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American horror/thriller film written and directed by Roman Polanski. The screenplay is based on the bestselling 1967 novel of the same name by Ira Levin.
The story focuses on Rosemary Woodhouse, a bright but somewhat naïve young housewife, and her struggling actor husband Guy after they move into the Bramford, a New York City apartment building with a history of unsavory tenants and mysterious events.
10/10 - a must watch for any film lover.
