Just finished watching "Factotum." Read the book a few weeks ago, I like Bukowski. If you do too, I think you'll like the movie. The movie is a decent adaptation of the book, Set in a more modern time. Time restraints always mean a movie will have less detail than the book, but this one works.

Matt Dillon (not one of my favorite actors) does a good job, Marisa Tomei's tits are exposed for a minute. No compelling plot line, car chases or any other "action." Just a well written book turned into a well crafted movie.

    Review: Bukowski: Born into This

^ Thanx for the tip FF! Bukowski is a interesting American artist! I'll check this flick out!

I like Matt Dillon, he was GREAT in Rumble Fish (1983), There's Something About Mary (1998), Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and To Die For (1995) to name a few.

But I digress! I guess I should write about a documentary I saw a while back about Bukowski called Bukowski: Born into This (2003).

It talks about the crazy life of the American writer Charles Bukowski. It was made way after he died, so all of the footage of him was old B&W film & video of interviews he did in the past.

It was a well put together documentary, not only incorporating the archival footage I mentioned, but it also has new interviews w/ friends, family, & famous fans of Bukowski's work.

He was an interesting character, with an interesting story. I like the fact he wasn't some bohemian wanna be artist walking around w/ a beret, but he was a blue collar guy writing about a way of life that a lot of people can relate to!

I would give this movie 3.5/4 stars!

Review for Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

This movie is starring Will Ferrell, who plays a straight laced IRS agent, who's life gets turned upside down when he starts to hear voices inside of his head. They aren't the ordinary voices a schizophrenic hears, but it's the voice of the author who is the creator of his life!

Ferrell does a nice job of playing a straight character, rather than his usual wacky role! He is backed by Dustin Hoffman who is a writing professor, helping Ferrell's character understand what's going in his life/story.

Good script, nice acting, good cinematography, & good editing made this movie a joy to watch.

I would give this flick 3.5/4 stars.

    Review: The King of Comedy

This is a review of the Scorsese masterpiece The King of Comedy (1983).

This is a movie about a 34-year old loser/clinically delusional man named Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro). He has hopes of becoming a famous stand-up comedian, & getting his BIG break on the Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) Show. He gets so delusional, that he mixes up his fantasy meetings w/ the Jerry Lewis character as reality.

In typical Scorsese fashion, the movie can be rather uncomfortable/embarrassing to watch, but at the same time you can't stop watching it! Rupert's partner in crime is Sandra Bernhard, who plays another obsessed stalker/fan of Jerry Lewis, her character is crazy as hell!

This is one of Scorsese's classics, a must see for any fan of his!

    I give it 4/4 stars!

Just watched Boondock Saints. Liked it. Willem Dafoe as a swish FBI agent three vigilante killers, more a comedy with lots of gore and killings. The soundtrack was great. If you need "realism" your films, or heavy-weight story-lines this might not be for you. if your temperament don't allow laughing while blood is splattered across the screen, this might not be for you.
I can't see this as anything more than a dark comedy. Great production, cinematography, good acting and funny. Very few seeders, the thing took damn near 24 hours to download.

    Kingdom of Heaven

Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, and notably, Gladiator), this movie premiered in 2005 to high expectations brought about by the hugely successful Hollyrome saga Gladiator.

Despite a strong cast and impressive special effects, reviews were lukewarm at best; critics felt that Orlando Bloom was miscast for the role of stoic, righteous pragmatic Balian of Ibelin, who surrendered to Saracen ruler Saladin after the siege of Jerusalem. The other major complaint was that Scott has chosen to overlook important historical facts in his eagerness to show that were it not for the fanatics, there would be a real possibility of lasting peace between Jews, Christians and Muslims. (Obviously this upset a good number of right-wing bloggers with an anti-Muslim axe to grind as well.)

Finally, and perhaps more importantly for the artistic merits of the film, many felt the 2.5 hour long epic was unsuccessful in capturing and retaining their attention.

Although there is truth to all of the above points, I thought it was solid entertainment. Anybody who looks to blockbuster films for historic accuracy is in need of urgent educational therapy anyway.

Orlando Bloom is a far cry from Russel Crowe's macho plumber-I-might-like-to-fuck-if-I-were-a-desperate-housewife presence. He would not make it far as a military commander, nor as a blacksmith. But he's a capable actor nonetheless, and the casting could have been a lot worse. Ricky Gervais. Chuck Norris. Denzel Washington.

The script as such would have been better suited for an extended mini-series than a feature film. If, like me, you enjoy swordplay, sieges and knights in general, and are looking to score a laid-back afternoon or evening in front of the telly with no particular expectations, I think Kingdom of Heaven just might do the trick anyway.

    6.5 rather positive Uhhhh's out of 10.

The mystery of Chaco canyon - Documentarty

An excellent film about the Chacoan peoples and their mathematical/Astronomical skills. Narrated by Robert Redford.

An excellent piece on a lost civilization in the American Southwest. Very similar to the Mayans in the "line" of their designs.

Also an excellent view of the Four Corners area of the southwest, If you've never been there or read about it there is quite a bit of history of old peoples in this area. The most famous of course are the "Pueblo Dwellers" the Anasasi (sp?).

Just finished "Bound." Excellent film noir, with an interesting twist. It's got Eye-Talian Mafioso 2 million bucks A tough independent ex-con and the con's lover (hooked up with one them gangsters).

Some of the characters were, in my opinion mis-cast but the two lead players were perfect! Jennifer Tilly (I know shes a bit thick, but godammit, I like her like that) and her tough ex-con lover (had to look this one up) Gina Gershon (that senoir show girl from the movie "showgirl"). Yes CMn, they do get it on in the beginning of the flick not much shown but I liked it.

This movie's been done a thousand times, rip off the bad guys, love interest in trouble gotta come to the rescue save the day and maybe get away with the cash. It's what I like about it I could see Humphry Bogart and some Blonde bimbo playing these parts through in a Peter lorrie as Johnny and sidney greenstreet as the kingpin, there it is same but different.

I liked the movie some interesting cinematography and Jennifer Tilly's in almost every scene. Simple movie, but the excellent reproduction of that film noir ambiance without pushing the B&W thing. Took the movie into a realm of the art unrelated to story without tricks or special effects.

    Entertaining as hell.

    Mr Beans Vacation

My kids really wanted to watch this so I was forced to take them to the cinema to watch it today.

Mr Bean wins a holiday to Cannes and begins his journey by train. Along the way he manages to separate a father and son and ends up travelling with the boy.

Its all a bit creepy really as Mr Bean looks like a kiddy fiddler to me. Ok there are one or two parts that might raise a chuckle but really its not very funny.

The kids didnt enjoy it that very much either.

    2/5

"Payback" - Mel Gibson, featuring Kris Kristofferson and James Coburn as crime bosses.

Porter (Gibson) is betrayed by his best mate and his wife after robbing a Chinese triad money runner.
He survives and is now tracking his wife, former mate and the syndicate his mate joined with Porter's money for revenge, while the Triade, corrupt undercover cops and everyone else is hunting him.

Awesome "noir" movie, with Lucy Liu as a leatherclad sadist gangleader.

Tonight's movie: House of Sand and Fog. Well acted but poorly pieced together load of crap the only likable character was Ben Kingsly's part. Some White trailer trash bitch loses her house due to not reading her mail and an accounting error on the county's part (OK let's forget that ain't gonna happen as all actions are sent via registered mail and hand delivered). Then she gets in a relationship with another low-life; a fuckin country sheriff deputy.

Ben Kingsly is an Ira.. 'xcuse me Persian, Colonel he works two menial jobs supports his family and buys the place at auction. All this, of course, takes place in a matter of days.

In stead of going to court and suing the county, this stupid fuckin bitch and her idiot county mountie sleaze bag squeeze decide they are going talk their way into getting the house back Shit gets even more fucked up, thanks to these two low-life drama queens.

If you can't tell, the movie pissed me off. I know fuckin' idiots like this and no doubt they fuck things up just as badly. Was a bit of Soap Opera; the holes in story are gaping; but the acting is good, believable. I won't hold the director responsible for that. The way he moronically went about defining the similarities between the low-life bitch and Kingsly's character were trite and contrived; the thing had a low-budget, Made for TV air about it, as well.

Good acting, Bad story, strung together even more badly. Give it a miss.
