I am a sucker for AI movies so I have no idea how I totally missed this one from 2017.

It explores the complexities and contradictions of family relationships through the mirror of AI holograms programmed to comfort the bereaved

Great idea for a new angle on the AI movie genre and delivers as much as you hope for

It is transcendent and elevating in exactly the way that Archive 2020 was not.

Tell him in Mandarin, maybe he'll understand it then.

As there hasn't been covid in NZ for many months the cinemas are open and we went to see Wonder Woman 1984 . . .

Popcorn for the girls, Maltesers or me and and Sprite (the littlest one and her friend had water - weirdos)

The movie itself was quite good but a bit laborious in places - it seemed to hark back to the old 'suspense' scenes where you know the actions needs to be taken but the heroine just takes her time inexplicably.

Two evil personas and neither of them really BAD enough, despite their actions, to dislike 100%.

All in all a god movie, worth the NZD12.50 each

Bone Tomahawk 2015 - Directed by S. Craig Zahler. Starring Kurt Russell

Western horror mixed genre. Very creepy tale of good guys on a mission to rescue people kidnapped by neolithic, cannibalistic savages.

    Another Black Mirroresque offering is

    Host (2020)

Only 56 minutes long for this technology oriented horror/shocker which gives it a BM atmosphere (although the technology is present day rather than futuresque)

Plays out kind of like the Blair Witch but in a Zoom video group chatroom instead of a straggly forest.

    Soul (2020)

Wonderful Pixar animation of the trials of a jazz musician which muses on philosophical themes of life and death while keeping the comedy sharp

I have downloaded 2 copies (YTS and some other one) and they are both terrible. The frame rate seems very low like they were made from a web cast over a bad connection.

Strange as YTS is normally good quality.

    The White Tiger

Strongly drawn characters give this story of the struggle of a low caste Indian from servant to entrepreneur an authentic visceral feel.

Apparently it is a film adaptation of a 2010 booker prize winning novel.

    Passengers . . . blurb:

Passengers is a 2016 American science fiction romance film directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts, partially based on the 1950s EC Comics story '50 Girls 50'. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, with Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne in supporting

    I'd give it an 8/10

    The Game (1997)

One that I rewatch occasionally because of wonderful direction (David Fincher, sandwiched between Se7en and Fight Club) and editing, a sterling cast and an excellent script.

Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is a miserable, rich banker who is enticed into a "game" by his errant younger brother (Sean Penn) and in no time at all he's trapped in a world of paranoia and doesn't know who he can trust. Wonderful twists and turns throughout, I put this on a par with another of my favourites, David Mamet's House of Games and give it a solid 9/10.

That in no way is a spoiler as you will determine when you watch the film.

Unless you consider "rounded it off nicely" a spoiler. In which case please explain how I have ruined a cheesy hollywood flick for you.

    GLORIA ( 2013 )

I looked for this because it has such a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes .
    And I hated it .
If you take a miserable idea ..... it doesn't matter how well-acted it is . Doesn't matter about the structure being well-thought-out .
If its a miserable time in someone's life then filming the idea with a remarkably good actress is still going to be a miserable 2 hours .
Did not like it at all . 'Rotten' gave it 99% . I would score it 24% .

    Quite enjoyed Nomadland

Gave up looking for a good rip and endured the 10fps dial-up stream that was offered by the main torrenters.

Refreshing original gently paced observational character portrait.

    7.8/10

Had to laugh when I read that the CCP were cheer-leading director Chloe Zhao's 'Chinese' Golden Globes victory at the end of February until it came to light that she had criticised China's political status quo several years ago, after which she was summarily and instantly Unpersonned Orwell-style on the Chinese internet 2 weeks ago on 5th March at the behest of the secretive powers of state

    The Courier 2020

Excellent cold war thriller with Cumberbatch as a British businessman recruited by the CIA to work as a spy.

Wonderful atmosphere and my favourite kind of movie.

Puts me in mind to crank up the sublime Tinker Tailor from 2011 again.

Make sure and get subs with Russian parts before yuo crank it up so you don't have to put your freshly poured beer back in the fridge for 10 minutes while you faff around.

Luckily the opening sentence is in Russian so you know right away there is a problem rather than finding out once your half a beer down.

    8.3/10

    Love and Monsters

.Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson, along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over the radio with his high school girlfriend, Aimee, who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there's nothing left for him underground, he decides to venture out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.

One of the advantages of ASQ is having time on your hands and not having to cook.

So I started watching the Millennium series again, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009).

Although they didn't do too poor a job of robbing it for Hollywood, the original is still a brilliant piece of work.

Naomi Rapace's Lisbeth is scary as fuck, and you cringe when she's exacting her revenge on her guardian.

Another good 8.5/10 and I should be able to watch the other two either side of the footy before I am paroled.
