    Rocketman.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old.
Maybe it's because the selection of OS movies available at local cinemas just doesn't appeal to me.
But it's been a while since I've seen a movie which is thought-provoking and inspires an after-movie discussion. (Last years Green Book was a notable exception.)
Or a movie which is a pleasant action-packed diversion. (Even the last Bourne offering was a drop in quality.)
Or a movie which has interesting characters. (Bohemian Rhapsody was an exception, as well as the aforementioned Green Book.)

So I thought that the biopic Of Elton John might offer something, at least to the standard of BR.
    But really, it didn't.
Elton John just didn't appear to be a very interesting person.
The movie dealt with his drug-taking and bum-banditry, parrot like costumes and extreme shoes, but overall, his personality seemed quite bland.
A marked contrast to Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Musical-type aspects of the movie were quite interesting, where the cast bursts into song along with Elton, and the party at the house/garden of Mama Cass is on my bucket list if ever a time machine is invented, but on the whole, Rocketman is a rather bland offering, which gets a rather bland 4.5.

    Creed II

    Quite good

    7/10

Another rehash from the 80s is in the pipeline

Maverick has lost the big F-14 swing wing Tomcat and is rocking some epic moves in the F/A-18 hornet in this trailer.

The F-35 will never look this good.

I only got around to watching Top Gun last year. Had never seen it before. Cheese-tastically fun 80s fluff!

I actually liked this film. The device for telling the story was quite effective, similar to De-Lovely a biopic musical about the life of Cole Porter.
It is hard not to disassociate oneself for the media image of Elton John from film but on the whole this film was well acted and the music was excellent.
For me it was all about the genius of Elton John and his incredible musical legacy.

    "In Fabric" (2018).
Review the last film you watched-indexvv-jpg

Weird, comic-horror tale involving the story of a haunted red dress sold to two different customers from a very strange department store set somewhere in the indeterminate era of around 70's-early 80's.

Starring the (very good) Marianne Jean-Baptist, and the spooky-but-erotic Fatma Mohamed as the store's sales lady, this is a film that's difficult to categorize. Twisted humour abounds as the creepy red dress profoundly affects the lives of the people it is sold to.
    Different, I enjoyed it. 8/10.

    What a treat!
Two movies that grabbed my interest, and the cost of a ticket, in the same month!

First off, Tarantino's latest offering 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.'
Set in 1969, Leonardo DiCaprio has the role of a fading, ageing Western movie star attempting to revive his career.
(Tarantino's third movie in a row with a Western theme, this one much more loosely based than 'Django Unchained' or 'The Hateful 8', but hopefully T will pick a different theme next time.)
Brad Pitt is his stunt double.
Al Pacino makes an appearance as Marvin Schwarz, the agent of DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton.

I found it a very interesting movie, with Dalton dealing with the changes in the industry since he was famous.
Brad Pitt's character Cliff Booth gets involved with the Manson family, which was a surprise plot addition, which in turn leads to an excellent action-packed, (and Tarantino-style, amusing in parts), finale.
The Manson connection bears little relation to what actually happened at that time, but that is surely part of the 'Once Upon A Time' aspect in the title.

So, a good movie, never boring for it's 2 hours 40 mins, not to the standard of some of T's classics, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, even True Romance, no Samuel L. Jackson or Christoph Waltz, but very watchable.

Then, yesterday I went to see 'Rambo - Last Blood'.
    Not bad.
A basic storyline of Rambo's niece, (who has a role more as his adopted daughter), going to Mexico to visit her wastrel father, and being kidnapped.
Rambo goes to get her back and the predictable mayhem ensues.

Stallone looking as old as an old sock, but carrying the role well, and the action parts are engaging.
But, it's heavy on slushy sentimentality and cartoon-like in it's execution.
    Not bad.

    "Midsommar". (2019).

Original and quite exceptional thriller. Set in the midst of almost perpetual daylight of a picturesque Swedish meadow, a group of US students are invited to the cultural highlight of a Summer solstice festival in the middle of nowhere by a Swedish exchange student. Initially charmed and intrigued by the beautiful setting and Nordic beauty on show (plus plenty of 'shrooms, and other mind-altering drugs), things start to go slightly awry for the visitors, and increasingly sinister and malevolent pagan rites are involved. (A bit like a Nordic "Wicker Man").
Same director as the excellent "Hereditary" chiller a couple of years ago, this is probably the most disturbingly original film I've seen this year. Brutal and gory in parts, and maybe not to everyone's taste, but I'll give it a 9/10.

Saw that, didn't really see what all the fuss was about personally (didn't think it was a bad film though).

That being said your post has reminded me that i've been meaning to check out this Midsommar also, it has been getting some good buzz.

I watched El Camino last night. It is a movie based on the continuation of where Breaking Bad left off. It shows what happens to Jesse after he escapes the blow out. It was okay, but a little slow. I was hoping for more action.

^It was on netflix, so not like I paid much to watch it. A big fan of that series, so thought Id check it out. I was disappointed though.
Barely any action, and the El Camino car isn't even shown in the movie. Just fell short all the way around. It was good to see Jesse was alive and got even with the dicks that kept him in the cage.

I just watched it and thought it was a must for any Breaking Bad fan.
I thouroughly enjoyed it and see Pinkman in a new light.
Without giving to much away, it adds closure.

Think you must have missed the first 20 minutes.

Also Gilligan was probably having a little joke, as 'El Camino' also means something which has nothing to do with cars.

As for the movie...barely enough material for a tv episode, let alone a movie.

4/10 from this Breaking Bad fan.

i watched the director's cut yesterday, and it's pretty great....he's quite skillful at pulling you into the world he's created.

safe to say it won't be for everyone, but i still highly recommend it.

fyi, there are a few scenes with a handful of lines in swedish....make sure you've got subs.

    Dolemite Is My Name (2019).

Eddie Murphy is superb in this biopic of 70's "Blaxploitation" star Rudy Ray Moore. From being a mediocre "entertainer" and MC, Moore learned his comic schtick from a homeless guy coming into his place of work and telling rhyming (and ribald) tales of a guy named "Dolemite".
Moore refines this act and invents a new persona for himself, selling thousands of underground records as the labels won't touch his obscene humour. (Probably akin to the UK's "Derek & Clive" of the same era).
Limited success follows, but one night during a visit to the cinema to see a "white" comedy, Moore has a vision of being a movie star..

Some funny-as-fuck moments in this movie. Murphy gives a great and very likeable performance as the charismatic Moore.
    Recommended. 8.5/10 for me.

My lad who is a qualified film buff described this as "What The Wicker Man should have been".

We discussed the relative merits of both versions, the one with Britt Ekland's tits and the one with Nic Cage's terrible acting, and agreed that neither would be that hard to beat, although that latter significantly easier than the former.

    It wasn't a bad watch, I'd give it 7/10.

Not one I've watched, but it does look enticing.

KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.

Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Noah Segan, Edi Patterson, Riki Lindhome, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer.
