..."Girl"..."Girl is a 2018 Belgian drama film directed by Lukas Dhont, in his feature debut, and written by Dhont and Angelo Tijssens. It stars Victor Polster"...partly in French and partly in Flemish (English subtitles). An interesting if overlong portrayal of a 15 year old boy wanting to transition to girlhood. The main character is helped by an incredibly sympathetic father as well as understanding teachers, doctors and schoolmates...seemed a bit unrealistic to me, but the movie is European, not Oklahoman. No religious sneering or cultural opprobrium...although female classmates did want to see her dick as evidence of a previous life...6.5/10...

    First They Killed My Father.
Despite being directed by Angelina Jolie and produced by one of the Jolie-Pitt kids (they did a good job, actually), this movie is not bad at all. It's a tame look at the atrocity that was the Khmer Rouge actions in Cambodia. I say "tame" in that it was not a Killing Fields expose of blood, though there was plenty of tragedy and blood. Seen through the eyes of an actual survivor who was a little girl at the time, she went on to write the book upon which the film is based.
Of interest to all, but especially us in Thailand as it is very close to home, and maybe even a reminisce for some, it's heart-wrenching and serves to remind us that the war mongers of the world are bastards.

As I said when I reviewed it, she did a great job. Just a look at the credits tells you how carefully she had to step and how many wheels needed greasing to get it done.

    Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).
Review the last film you watched-1542248943-bohemian_rhapsody_movie_review-jpg

Enjoyable, entertaining rockumentary about the band Queen, and singer Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek does a fantastic (imo) job playing Mercury, from Zanzibar immigrant, to fully-formed rock-star of the 70's-80's. Some of the dialog is a bit cliched and Spinal-Tap-ish, but Queen were never about subtlety and restraint. First part of the film shows the band's modest beginnings, and then the meteoric full-on success after signing with EMI. Also the stories behind how those anthemic songs and albums were created.
Second half of the film is about Mercury's estrangement from the rest of the band due to his lifestyle, sexuality, and even taste in music. His baroque parties, and flamboyant and increasingly over-the-top personality.
    I liked it. 8/10.

The leading actress, the star was excellent, especially considering she probably did not grow up with the Hollywood-adulation of young American kid actors.

First Man (2018) Directed by Damien Chazelle

A melodramatic and somewhat dark take on the life of Neil Armstrong and the first manned space mission to the moon. Deeply tethered to grief after the death of his infant daughter the film depicts a troubled and taciturn man who became a reluctant hero. Not much about the film, the actors or the dialogue were depicted in the way I remember the time period or the events or the way they were presented to the world. I don't think Ryan ever really gets at the core of Armstrong's character.
Hard not to compare this film to The Right Stuff (1983) directed by Philip Kaufman, a much better film.

    6/10

    Monsters and Men

    This was...umm...OK.

I was expecting a bit more polemic.

There's even a scene where the cops play basketball against their supposed homies, which seemed strangely out of place.

The whole thing is set up as some sort of John Singleton deal, but it rather...err...cops out.

    6/10

..."Kursk...is a 2018 English-language French-Belgian drama film directed by Thomas Vinterberg based on Robert Moore’s book A Time to Die, about the true story of the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster."
    Strong performances (particularly
Matthias Schoenaerts), good pacing, solid direction...7.5/10

    I quite enjoyed

    Hunter Killer

It is a bit retro in styling and plotline and very reminiscent of the great sub movies from a few years ago even down to the scene-setting location updates appearing on screen in computertype with a beeping noise for added drama.

Great HD military hardware pornography of everything from long hard akula-class subs packed with Russian sea-men and thrusting purposefully under the ice to what I think must be the movie debut of the F-35B plus rogue Russian generals and seal teams behind enemy lines.

The cheesy predictability of the story and action only adds to the nostalgia feel of this smorgasbord of military hardware.

Even the poster is a rip-off of Hunt for Red October

Just saw Aquaman with Wife today at Major Cineplex.

It was a mix of good action and some fantasy. I personally enjoy DC comic and Marvel movies. I read many as a kid. They are fun to watch with good action.

^My son (7 yo) enjoyed it. Entertaining visuals, and the female lead Amber Heard is very easy on the eye.

WTF has Nicole Kidman had done to her face, though?

I'm halfway through Aquaman. It's got fuck all plot, just waffle, and loads of CGI to point where it's getting intensely dull, and I can't see any redeeming qualities to make me watch the second half after I've had dinner.

Yet this has made billion dollars. Must be the "50 shades" frustrated housewives, divorcees and spinsters crowd is all I can say.

Hasn't made 5/10 so far and I can't see me bothering with the rest of it.

Fabulous movie. Acting, musical performances, directing all superb. Seems that it's been forgotten about at the awards. It should sweep multiple categories at the Academy Awards but will probably be eclipsed by nonsense like Black Panther.

Lots of nominations, including eight for the academy awards.

It's true that only the song won at the Golden Globes, for example.

I'd say that's 'not winning' rather than 'being forgotten'.

Sounds like it's popular with housewives and metrosexuals.
