I agree and I think Eddie Redmayne could win Best Actor for the second year in a row. I don't think Tom Hooper will get the Best Director nod though, I think this may be Spielberg's year for Bridge of Spies.Quote:

I watched it tonight.
Very grim portrayal of some very nasty characters. Stylistically the cinematography is quite impressive but the depressing and depraved subject material is a struggle to stay with for 2 hours.

Kurzel is currently working on an adaptation of Peter Carey's Booker Prize winning novel True History of the Kelly Gang which I enjoyed reading back in 2001. I think he could be the perfect director for that gritty tale.
The Lobster
Very strange piece starring Colin Farrell set in a dystopian world where single people have 45 days in a lake district hotel to find a partner or be turned into an animal.
Residents can extend their stay by killing 'loners' who have escaped the hotel and live in the woods.
Makes many oblique observations on the nature of romantic relationships as the story unfolds.
Very odd and not as easily digested as the average flick but certainly original.

I was maybe being a bit generous since it was very original and it is nice to see ideas that don't fit any genre mold. I could go as low as 6 if I was just gauging my actual enjoyment of the movie. I think 5 is a bit harsh.Quote:

Davis, you're gonna hate it! Now, the acting is deliberately bad as the director seems to have gone for a pastiche of a B movie style dark comedy without too much comedy and generally heavy on the social satire (them/us normal/difference conventional/unconventional) type thing. And, I think this'll irritate you.
I would suggest, the main attachment the audience feels with a character is the lead's brother (you'll find out why this is strange about 2 minutes into the movie), and worse still: this is a deliberate device by the director.
&, Looper gave it 7/10! :)
He's trying to pretend he's some kind of elitist, but they talked about it and had the leads on Graham Norton weeks ago, and it sounded like a load of shit then.Quote:

You are right. It was more a stage play than a film. &, I did watch it to the end, and did enjoy it, and it did promote some thought (I thought about it then when straight to the Lesbo scenes in her other film...). But, there is no way on God's great planet that Senor Davis was gonna enjoy that film.
Luktung signature, 100 baht on a Wednesday, forget the director, some Thai bloke obviously and on the pics at present. About 6 stories running along side each other without overlaps with music used as the thread. Does not quite work, probably one too many story lines and another one or two that seem a bit out of place, you learn why at the end. Some wonderful music with one or two great scenes and a few amusing bits as well as some insight into Thai culture regarding the importance of luktung.
One or two famous faces including Sormphet a singer from the 70's Apaporn Noknsawan and lyric writer from Grammy Sala Chunawutt. Probably a few others I did not know like the 60's film stars, I think they were the real actors. Worth taking the mrs to if she likes country music. I'll probably see it again. 7/10, well at least it had no ghosts in it and only a fleeting ladyboy :) While the film has subs in English the trailer does not TIT

Watchable but equally forgettable hollywood pulp. Fight scenes are fun but the pedestrian Creed character seems to be missing something elemental and does not project the visceral hunger and motivation you would expect in a world class boxer.

A Lonely Place to Die
Dramatically and beautifully filmed in the Scottish highlands.
The stage is set well and the situation gets very creepy in the first half hour. The drama in the remainder of the film is well sustained but does not quite deliver on the promise of the first half hour with a slightly more predictable narrative.
Worth watching for the climbing and rope dangling scenes alone.
(don't read IMDB as it gives away the creepy twist in the opening half hour in the IMDB tagline)

The Survivalist
Post apocalyptic survivor drama. A lone male living in the forest has his routine disturbed when he receives 2 female guests, a mother and daughter. Very little dialogue and quite interesting post-apocalyptic behavioural observations but a bit bleak and missing a satisfying arc to the storyline.
