Blood Diamond, 8.5/10 :)
This is enjoyable viewing. It's set In Sierra Leone during the civil war. The star of the show is a large diamond, hidden by a rebel conscripted slave labourer. Leo de Caprio plays a jaded mercenary, archetypal 'brooding hero with the dark past who finds redemption' character. The love interest is provided by an idealistic reporter, out to cure the evils of the world. The subplot and social conscience is provided by the slave labourer and diamond hider, who's family has been kidnapped by those wicked rebels. So the scene is set, all amidst the backdrop of Africa, civil war, mercenaries and conflict diamond trading.
Featuring a happy ending, surprise surprise, but perhaps not the same as you might guess. Takes a swipe at the diamond trade and it's ethics, whilst assidously avoiding any mention of the Jooish domination of it- rather it's all sinister Sth Africans with Boer names and clipped accent, effete London businessmen. But this is Hollywood, after all.
If you enjoyed 'The Last King of Scotland' I reckon you'll enjoy this one also.
