I saw Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds, tonight and really liked it. Though I'm not really interested in some of his genre work I do really appreciate Tarantino's gift for writing dialogue and plot construction. Nothing visually stunning in the movie that would need to be seen on the big screen so if you're not a big fan you might wait till video. I was glad to see Mike Meyers only had a small part in the film because after all his character work I find his delivery less than convincing when he isn't supposed to be funny. Much of the film is subtitled and I will probably have to watch it again to see if there is anything I missed along the way.
The film had a preview of James Cameron's "Avatar" that is scheduled to come out later this year. This movie looks amazing with motion capture, live action, and shot in digital 3d.

State of Play (2009) - Synopsis
The Boat that Rocked.
Great British comedy about pirate radio in the 60's.
Good acting by the likes of Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost etc.
This film also has a kicking soundtrack if you love yer classics.
Absolutely loved it, highly recommended.
8.5/10
Just watched this on cable. Never heard of it before. Was very surprised!!! Excellent thriller shot on a shoe string budget ( by hollywood standards ).

^ One of Colin Farrell's only performances where I didn't want to hurl...
Come on,
He was brilliant in "In Bruges".
Perhaps he should do a bit more comedy?
^ Haven't seen that one yet... Thanks for the tip...
Inglorious Basterds - Brad Pitt, Eli Roth - team of American jews OSI unit lead by LT Aldo Raines (Pitt) assigned to infiltrate nazi occuppied france, torturing and scalping Nazi(s) along the way to create fear in the enemy Apache Indian style. When a chance to wipe out Hitler and the high command occurs they take the opportunity with a vengeance. Really violent and over the top - great dialogue, give it 8/10

Drag Me To Hell
Expecting a return to "Evil Dead" form from Sam Raimi, I was shocked at the awfulness of this movie. Lousy script & concept, cardboard actors, cheapo CGI special effects, not scary or clever in the slightest, predictable from beginning to end.
Utter dreck.
Inglorious Basterds
A match of two halves. Rather a good performance from someone playing a people hunting nazi. Around him were Brad Pitt and a few other folk with no script, plot or apparent acting abilities. We were expected to believe that Hitler would go to watch a movie premiere in France with only two guards. Total mess. 3/10
Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owen
a bit slow at the beginning, completely confusing and losing interest by the middle of it, but it does catch up in the last 30 minutes with a very good ending
a story of former CIA and MI6 agents try to convert themselves into the corporate world by staging corporate spying gigs with double cross, double double cross etc... a bit confusing as you don't know who say the truth, and there is a love story mixed in the whole. Also confusing is the constant trip between present and past, almost feel like a bad episode of Lost without the interesting mystery plot.
almost gave up but it did catch up and overall it was quite entertaining and good. Good cast (a lot of famous actors) and excellent acting from the cast, nice complex plot, even though you could see it coming, but it was still nicely twisted.
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
I've never been a Quentin Tarantino fan... As much as I enjoyed Resevoir Dogs and as much as I thought Pulp Fiction was excellent - like Trainspotting they seemed to be films that were trendy to like more than anything else. Borat too was appreciated more for it's poos and wees and tits and nudity more than it was for the mirror it shone on American society. The violence of Natural Born Killers also eclipsed the point of the story to the vast majority of fans and critics.
Inglorious Basterds is very good, QT keeps the violence in check yet there is enough to satisfy the gore fans, but the beauty of this film, that only really hit me as I went to the bathroom after the end credits, is that I had just witnessed true cinema at blockbuster level - which is a rare treat in this age of money spinning films such as Transformers 2 and Final Destination.
I can deeply relate to Tarantino in that all he ever wanted to do was show people what he could do, and despite having done that several times over - his passion for his art is stronger than ever and he is keen to share it.
Basterds is unlike anything he has done before yet it retains the QT stamp all the way through. The cast is superb, from the Oscar worthy Christoph Waltz to Michael Fassbender, from Mike Myers (an interesting choice) to the bloke who looks like Ewan McGregor who tries to woo the films heroine - Melanie Laurent, another excellent Euro actor. Many of the scenes are very long but the tension keeps the boredom at bay and the dialogue is superbly crafted with none of Quentin's personal reverie pushed in our faces a la 'Jimmy's coffee' from Pulp Fiction.
Neither does he go overboard trying to be different.. There are the trademark chapter markers and a nice macro close up of whipped cream being scooped off a plate but it all fits into place perfectly and compliments the story.
You can almost smell the pipe smoke, taste the apple strudel and the whisky, and feel the boots on the wooden floorboards - it is the cinematic equivalent of a hand crafted piece of furniture in a world of IKEA popcorn flicks.
I reckon I could do a better job than a lot of film makers out there, but not QT - if I wasn't a 'fan' before, then I am now. Tarantino deserves every bit of fortune and glory he has made for himself. Soundtrack as always was interesting - being WW2 then his usual fare would not have worked but his choice of music worked perfectly, despite not confining himself to period pieces of the era.
It is a very self confident piece of work, and the last line in the film is 'This may just be my masterpiece' which may not be too far from the truth. Personally I would use a mallet to bang it in between Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. It's proper cinema and I could not see how anybody with decent taste in film could fail to like it. If you want non stop action, go see GI Joe.
9.5/10
Ah yes, keep your ears open for a VO from Samuel L Jackson and a telephone conversation between Brad Pitts Lt Aldo Raine and what sounds very much like Harvey Kietel.

I Disagree, TGS. I though the film was pretty crap, not the same quality of his previous work. But there you go, we are all different.
looking forward to see that one and GI JOE![]()
True... I wouldn't expect it to be everyones taste but being somewhat in a similar field and with the same passion I will appreciate things that others wouldn't. Some people just want to be entertained.
I was astounded recently that somebody who I had always thought had good taste in movies enjoyed American Pie.
I watched "The Boat That Rocked" a couple days ago, enjoyed it immensely.
Red Sands (2009) - No stars of note... yank army platoon finds a statue against a mt wall in Afghanistan that loooks to been there for a very long time. One of the muppets decide it be fun to shoot it up. Needless to say it crumbles and they unknowingly release a Jin (genie). Pretty moody and things go from bad to worse for a soon to be lost platoon. 6/10 Not bad for what it was.![]()
DISTRICT 9
After Inglorious Basterds I wasn't expecting to see another great movie for at least a year or two, but District 9 is another triumph - a debut from Neill Blomkamp made possible by Peter Jackson.
An original movie with no original elements, pretty much every type of alien and spaceship has been designed, nigh on impossible to come up with an awe inspiring design.
Okay, the film is about an alien slum in Johannesburg. It is about racism, greed and power and will leave you feeling moved and possibly ashamed. At the end I felt tearful and I clapped. I will see this again at the cinema as it deserves all the support it can get.
On Rotten Tomatoes it scored a ranking of 90.
Excellent.
