Never saw the original, anyway - I LOVE the concept of the film, i.e. aliens coming to save every species on earth except us. The movie is a great example of the stupidity, wanted violence and arrogance of mankind. Unfortunately the story suffers from the same malady itself in that we are not all destroyed at the end because the alien witnesses a moment of typical Seppo mawkish emotion and changes his mind thus saving us after all.
The message of the film is
'Only when we are on the brink of destruction are we willing to change' - yeah whatever... Stars a wooden-as-usual Keanu Reeves, a nothing-to-write-home-about Jennifer Garner, that spoiled brat what Will Smith planted in Jada Pinkett Smith with his fuck stick, and a getting-on-a-bit John Cleese who actually managed a sincere performance.
It's certainly not the first film to hold a mirror up to ourselves as a race and it won't be the last, but like all of them - we will view it and sigh,
"We should learn to love one another" before strolling out of the cinema and going back to our destructive and ignorant life without giving the moral a second thought.
