The illusionist is about 6 months old BF.
I watched Laurel Canyon last week.
It's about the son of a fading musician who moves back home with his girlfriend to be near the hospital where he has just got a new job. His GF is miss 'prim & proper', but soon manages to get sucked in by her BF's mother and the rock'n'roll lifestyle, thus neglecting her studies.
All in all, a crock of shite, but you do get to see Kate Beckensdale's bum, so it has its good points.
4 out of 10.
^^If you liked it, try The Illusionist and see which one you think is better.
^I saw The Illusionist on a plane....he was sitting in row D....No, but seriously, a very very good film. I wish there more films like it, made for entertainment and nothing more and cracking entertainment it was too.
That will be a short review. Yesterday UBC true TV5 channel I had the chance to see the Jean Luc Godard movie "Le mépris (1963) " a piece of art with famous actors. Ciné-club : Le mépris de Jean-Luc Godard
But after only 10 seconds, while seeing the beautiful Brigitte Bardot lying buttnaked on a bed I got the famous thai censorship interlude pinkscreen. So switched off the TV and went for a beer.
SAW III
haven't seen the others, don't need to - half an hour of this was enough, yet another one of these pretentiously edited crappy horror movies where you can't see what's going on cause it's too dark, just the usual flashbacks, mysterious child appiritions and gore.
This DVD is good as a Tuk-Tuk reflector and nothing else.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

28 Weeks Later - pretty disturbing follow-up to 28 Days later. Yes the world class sprinter infected cannibals are back. Great sequel and one could say it has a political message.
We Are Marshall (2007)
Mathew McConaughey, Matthew Fox
This is the true story of the triles and tribulations of the Marshall University football team in 1971.
The small town is thrown into a state of despair when the team plane crashes on landing killing all 75 people on board who were returning from a game. This included some 50 football players, the entire coaching staff and fans.
Amidst the grief a battle ensues to make certain that football could continue at the university. Rules are bent to allow freshmen to play for the first time, the team were left with just 3 of the original team lucky enough not to have been on board the stricken plane.
Enter the new coach, played very eccentrically by McConaughey who battles against the odds to whip his young team into shape. An excellent performance by Matthew Fox, taking a break from his lead role in HBO's Lost where I think he's a bit of a tosser.
A very moving story, very enjoyable, not a sports movie in the conventional sense rather a story of the importance of local college football in small town America.
Recommended 8/10
^^Why, are the cannibals running for election?
I saw 3 movies last night, "The Queen," "Cocaine Cowboys" & "Girls of Pattaya."
Reviews will soon follow!
Has anyone seen this movie? 24 Hour Party People (2002)
It's one of those movies that slipped by me, I'll see it sometime this week.
yes, but when I saw your name i was hoping for the odd review or 3.Originally Posted by bustak
The Queen (2006)
This flick is about the events following Lady Di's death in 1996 . It really showed Tony Blair in a good light & the royal family to look like a bunch of douche bags. I'm not sure how accurate this film really is.
The acting was superb, especially Helen Mirren who played the Queen & Michael Sheen who played Tony Blair. James Cromwell (I) was superb as a VERY GROUCHY Prince Phillip, his character was rather humorous in how surly he was, but still believable !
This movie didn't drag on to much & the cinematography was very nice. This film really made me want to visit Balmoral, it looks gorgeous!
I would give it 3/4 stars!

Cocaine Cowboys (2006)
This documentary talks about the men & women who were responsible for the cocaine that was smuggled into Miami back in the 1970's & 80's. It was pretty well done done, showing in detail the ruthless business of drug smuggling that inspired the TV show "Miami Vice" (1984) & the movie Scarface (1983).
There was some really graphic police photos of children who were victims of this industry, which I thought was a nice touch showing the reality of this horrible business.
There were a lot of police photo's, interviews & stock film to piece this movie into a comprehensive overview of the drug game in 70's & 80's.
Anyone who is into documentaries, gangster films, or anything to do with law & order should see this movie.
I would give it a 3.25/4 stars.
Girls of Pattaya is a documentary I was able to download via the web:
http://www.pattayaaddicts.com/Pattaya%20girl%20documentary.zip
I'm not sure where to start with this movie. The filmmaker shot a lot of good footage & interviews. But I think he failed to properly execute a good narrative. He didn't do a HORRIBLE job, but it seemed to fall apart @ the end. It didn't really get in to the girls of Pattaya, but it lightly glossed over the men who fall in love with these birds.
The main character was a older farang gentlemen who owned the bar in Pattaya. He seemed to be on a self destructive path of boozing & untreated diabetes. I thought his Thai wife was a strong women who had a past I would of liked to hear more about, I found their dynamic to be interesting, but the film kind of left me hanging.
The 2 BIGGEST highlights for me was the interviews with the bar owners friend who had some good insight on some of the Thai girls who screwed over foreigners & another was when the bar owner was reading a letter to a bg from her "bf" who was sending her some FAT CA$H!
I would give this movie 2.75/4 stars. The characters were GREAT, I really liked them, meriting this movie higher than an average review, but the need I had wanting more info on these people made this review not as glaring as it should of been!
Yes. I thought it was poor. I guess if you were into the crappy Manc Baggy scene it would appeal.Originally Posted by bustak

^I liked it. there's a new film coming out concentrating on Ian Curtis called "Control", it has had very good reviews at Cannes. Made by Anton Corbijn, the guy who took all the black and white photos of the band.
Thanx for the tip NickA!

^ Ok.
By the way, last week I saw Prey.
It was ok, had Peter (Robocop) Weller in it and some lions and a jeep.
The Last King of Scotland - This is more than worth seeing for Forest Whitaker's portrayal of Idi Amin - A truly great performance. As for the film itself, it's based on a novel which I guess would be called faction, i.e. fiction based on fact. The story revolves around the relationship between a fictional Scottish doctor and the very real Amin. It was a great film, but I didn't buy into the fictional part - it didn't ring true in any sense and I don't think that it added anything to the story of Idi Amin which needs no embellishment.
I remember Amin from growing up in the 70's - initially he was portrayed as a loveable buffoon, but soon the stories were of executions by hammer and cannibalism. 8.5/10....for the film that is, not Amin.
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!
