Frailty - Bill Paxton Matthew McConaughey

Fenton Meeks (Matthew McConaughey), comes forth to tell the FBI that his brother Adam may be the serial killer who calls himself God's Hands, who the FBI has been searching for. The film uses flashbacks to show Meeks' childhood with a father (Bill Paxton) who believed he was on a mission from God to destroy demons that inhabit human bodies.

Not going to waffle about this, not brilliant but not a shocker, surprised I watched it as I can stand Paxton or McConaughey. 1h 30

The Escapist - Brian Cox, Damian Lewis, Joseph Fiennes

Frank Perry is an institutionalized convict twelve years into a life sentence without parole. When his estranged daughter falls ill, he is determined he make peace with her before it's too late.

A watchable prison escape movie. It cuts between the escape and the events in prison leading up to it. 1h 30

Choke - Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Houston

Sex addict and colonial theme park worker, Victor Mancini, has devised a complicated scam to pay for his mom's hospital bills while she suffers from an Alzheimer's disease that hides the truth about his childhood. He pretends to choke on food in a restaurant and the person who "saves" him will feel responsible for Victor for the rest of their lives.

This is how this movies is written up which gives the impression that the "choke" part is the main theme of the film when its not. This is what put me off this movie and the reason why I didnt download it sooner. This film had me laughing within minutes of it starting, satirical style of humour and not what I was expecting. Sam Rockwell is great in this, his timing and delivery really fit this type of film to a tee.

This is from the same writer as Fight Club, lots of chuckles and an all round winner for me.

Outlander [2008]

Format: DVDR

Jim Caviezel (how do you pronounce that again?) stars in this fantasy science fiction epic set in viking times. Caviezel is a spaceman (don't laugh) who travels to a distant galaxy and crash lands on our planet Earth in the time of the Norsemen.
Unfortunately, he accidentally brings an unwelcome and dangerous visitor with him, the Moorwen, an extra terrestrial creature who starts terrorising the helpless vikings.

This film is a bit heavy on the cgi effects. I'd recommend switching your brain off for this one and just enjoying the ride. John Hurt and Ron Perlman make appearances in decent roles and add much needed weight to the cast.

If you think you'll like a movie that is the bastard child of 13th Warrior and Eragon then you might like this.

Summary: I didn't expect much from this and I wasn't disappointed either.

The Grudge 3 - well picks up where it left off after Grudge 2. The tenants in the building where the last tragedy occured in Chicago - get a taste of the Jap curse. Centers on the building mgr and his two younger sisters. I wasn't expecting too much, but def surprised by this one. 7/10

Dull as dishwater, awful film really.

OK to kill a couple of hours with but nothing special and very forgettable.

Boy A

Having been institutionalized for most of his life, Jack (Andrew Garfield) is finally released from prison at the age of 24. He and another boy murdered a child when they themselves were children. The film follows Jack's attempts to readjust to the world outside of confinement and restart a life which never really got going.

This is obviously quite a dark subject, but dont let that put you off. Films like this just go to prove that you dont need big name actors and a massive budget to make a compelling and interesting movie.

Well acted all round from the young Jack who fits his elder persona to a tee as well as Terry, Jacks mentor played excellently by Peter Mullan. The characters are believeable and I really felt for Jack all the way through the movie, I think part of this is due to not really knowing how much of a part he played in the murder, the less is more theory works really well here.

Theres a whole host of movies from the UK that dont get noticed which is a shame as some of them, like this are nothing short of excellent. This did what I want from a film, interesting story, well shot and stirs your emotions.

Where do you get ideas of what to watch Melvbot? You tend to find some good stuff outside the mainstream.

I found this by typing something like "great movies 2008" into google and just went through a few Top 50 lists. Theres a lot of great films out there that just dont have the mega advertising budgets like Spiderman etc but are far better films.

The Bank Job

apparently a true story, involving one of England Royals Females having some fun with some black dude, of course MI5 is on the case and well, you can guess what they are up to

everything goes wrong, well not really,

that British actress who is playing the lead female character is absolutely stunning, she looks familiar though but can't tell who she is

Saffron Burrows - in Troy/Deep Blue Sea, and a bunch of less known films.

Screamers 2 The Hunting: Picks up where the last one left off, basic premise: A group of humans arrive on Sirius 6-B to investigate an SOS signal sent out from the planet, which has been supposedly deserted since the destruction of the man-made weapons known as "screamers." Once the squad arrives, they find a group of human survivors eking out an existence in an old military outpost, but more important, they discover that the threat of the screamers has become even more insidious, now that they're able to morph into human form.

Not bad direct to dvd movie - kind of predictable what happens, but never the less I give it 6/10.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley

This effort by Ken Loach takes us back to the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War. It won the 2006 Palme d'Or at Cannes.

I know very little about Irish history so I can't say how well the facts hold up, but as a story about what war does to humans it is definitely worth seeing.

Forgot to mention you may need subtitles even though English is spoken to 98%. I could not get my head around the accent properly. Once I had the subs on I could connect them to what was spoken, and it got a bit better. Anyone who's used to Irish accents probably will not have as much of a problem as I did.

The King of Kong, Documentary

I wasn't thinking much of that infamous documentary, it all seems another documentary on a bunch of idiot gamers,

but what a surprise and a nice ending, almost Hollywood like

First I thought it was a fucking parody, the lead characters were full of themselves with a degree of pettiness that was surreal. Between the lead referee, the geek fans, the spying devotees, they all felt like pathetic losers. However, things got really interesting when the DK Champion, Billy Mitchel, an arrogant twat who think he is a celebrity, started to be seriously "challenged" by a new promising and talented player after being undefeated for 25 years.

The plot is fucking awesome, yet surreal, and you have to see it to believe it, this is all true, and because there is a Guinness record at stake, it becomes very political. This is definitely a must see. Despite a slow and boring beginning that really looks like a fucking parody, by the end of the documentary you will feel triumphant and vindicated for the serious injustice that was committed. Simply amazing.

It's a classic, perhaps one of my favourite documentaries, up alongside Pimp Snooky (which I can never find a torrent for - anyone help?).

Billy Mitchell is a star and a nutcase. :)

The Lords of Dogtown

Tracing the beginning of the worldwide skateboard movement, as told by Stacey Peralta, one of the early giants of skateboarding who went on to form Powell/Peralta skateboards and start the hugely successful Bones Brigade skateboarding team, through which Tony Hawk became famous.

If you were ever into skateboarding this is definitely worth seeing. If not, then don't bother.

6/10 for me

'Dogtown and the Z-Boys' documentary is excellent as well, lots of original footage there and I think a great watch for non skateboarders like myself as well since it has another level.

If you see the original footage that was filmed you can appreciate how well they reproduced it in the Lords of Dogtown movie.
