Review the last film you watched

'Boy A'

It's a story of a young man, released from a children's prison after committing a heinous crime as a child, trying to build a new life and identity.

I don't want to give away too much, as the story tells its own tail and the links to real life cases become apparent.

I enjoyed this film, even though it was quite depressing, well acted by a young English actor who I'm sure we'll see more of.

I'd recommend it but don't expect anything high paced, more a story.

Better than a lot of the crap around at the moment.

Burn After Reading (2008)

John Malkovich plays a real asshole who, in the first scene, quits his job at the security agency over a demotion. It consists of Malkovich going off on his employer for about 5 minutes in a beautiful "fuck you" diatribe. Afterwards he makes a decision to write his memoirs, which his wife (Tilda Swinton) laughs at. Oh yeah, she's cheating on him with George Clooney, who is also having an affair with Frances McDormand, who is a fitness instructor who works with Brad Pitt, who, one day, finds a CD with Malkovich's memoirs on it and thinks it's some national security "shit" that he can blackmail for $50,000. Understand? Well, it's really not that confusing. All the characters in this film are connected to each other in some way, kind of like "Magnolia" or "Short Cuts", but without the dramatic style.

This film is a comedy, a lot of the elements in the plot are based on misunderstanding and communication. The audience has the upper hand here because we know everything, and it's enjoyable watching all these characters fuddle about, tripping over themselves. Still, the film is not without flaws. The dialogue is good, but don't expect it to be on par with films like "Fargo" or "Miller's Crossing". This is nowhere near the Coens' weakest movie (Intolerable Cruelty gets that award), but it's still an entertaining watch, albeit sometimes a frustrating one. It takes 30 minutes for the actual plot to reveal itself, and another 30 minutes for the climax to occur. Still, watching Brad Pitt as the moronic fitness instructor is entertainment in itself.

Intolerable Cruelty was an apt name for such a shit film. Coens brothers are sinking further downhill, past their days of great movie making, all the coke and the back slapping must have got to them.

I watched Millers Crossing again the other day, amazing film, they will struggle to reach that standard again.

I quite like that one actually, maybe because Zeta Jones was absolutely beautiful in that movie, also it was a very innocent and positive movie, in some 1960s kind of way

^Yes, and stop hiring A-list actors that are known for their blockbusters (Pitt, Clooney). I remember watching Fargo and not recognizing any member of the cast.

You need to download the Darling Buds of May, a pretty rubbish English tv series only worth watching for a 20 yr old Catherine Zeta Jones wankfest. :)

She's great in Traffic too, a quality film.

The Coen Bros are fantastic story tellers really, loved The Hudsucker Proxy.

movie was "acceptable" but nothing exceptional, acting was a bit lame

Grizzly Man

A sort of documentary put together by Werner Herzog about madcap bear loving Timothy Tredwell.

The movie is slung together from over 100 hours of footage recovered from tredwell's footage from the past 13 summers that he spent living with grizzly bears out in Alaska.

I absolutely loved this movie, not so much the bear stuff, more the main man involved. He had some beautiful moments with foxes that he's befriended and some wonderful commentary.

he was quite clearly a raving poove, that much is obvious from the amount he talks about how much easier life would be if he was homosexual and how he just loved rooting women and how he was great at rooting them.

anyway the movie ends with our hero Tredwell being savagely torn apart by one of the bears.

great movie and Werner herzog's narration is beautifully done, he resists the temptation to take the piss something rotten out of a man that was clearly insecure and a little on the loopy side of mad.

He was a quiet man,

saw this one here as a recommendation, and wasn't disappointed, very nice, a must see

a lot of good acting, and Christian Slater for once was acting, not pretending

He Was a Quiet Man (2007)

^ Yeah I have that, I thought it was great but ending was a let down.

My mate Tanya bought me Tropic Thunder on DVD - I have not finished it yet, but it's basically a Jewish boy and his mates making a silly story with silly jokes. Just so happens said Jewish boy is a movie star with studio contacts and a huge budget to play with.

Just watched Tropic Thunder. It's a bit like Hot Shots Part Deux, not quite that funny, but still original. Ben Stiller's name is all over the credits: actor, director, writer, producer. Looks like he got lots of his actor mates to do the movie with him. But the result is good. I laughed out loud at some scenes, which doesn't happen too often. Watch it just for the Platoon/Tour of Duty, soundtrack if you like.

Just watched 18 May a Korean movie which is about the story of events leading up to the 1980 Gwangju massacre in South Korea when thousands of students and protesters were killed by armed troops during an anti-government demonstration.

Interestingly enough, this movie, in the 21st century democracy, attempted to depict an unforgettable (and unforgivable) historical event of 1980 with the 1980 Korean Media methods by being monotonous, stereotyped and boring. It needed a better scriptwriter (whoever could've done a lot more research than those involved in this failure) because the Kwangju Massacre was one of the most important civil uprisings in the country's modern history.

I just couldn't sympathize with any part and I've found reading up on the internet more interesting. Only worth watching if your interested in the historical event.

Tropic Thunder is a great showcase for Robert Downey JR. He does a fine job of playing a black man and also an Australian, and has the Aussie accent down to a T. He did of course have previous experience playing Wayne Gale in Natural Born Killers.

Ben Stiller and Jack Black were Ben Stiller and Jack Black, Nick Nolte was scruffy and bearded again and Tom Cruise got to be silly and wear prosthetics.

The Midnight Meat Train

I am not a great fan of films with blood and gore all over the place, especially since it often contributes nothing to the storyline.

This film, starring Vinnie Jones, is an exception. It certainly is not for the squeamish and if the sight of blood makes you barf then take a very large bag with you.

The plot is a tad unrealistic, but the film does have atmosphere suspense and surprise. The blood and gore are not overdone since they are a necessary part of the story.

I enjoyed it. 7/10. Much prefer Vinnie as an actor than as a footballer.

oh man, did that one not age too well, physically (DVD quality was pretty low, not re-mastered) and artistically, some scenes and acting almost felt we were watching a bad movie from the 50s, however there a few very scenic and very memorable scene, in true David Lynch style. The set is beautifully styled, with great stylish outfits and a string of major actors back in the days when they were barely known.

Only the soundtrack didn't age and is still great, interesting story and plot, with interesting twist and David Lynch did a good job then. However, it didn't age well, and even David Lynch has turned down offers to re-master the movie for a DVD as he said it was his worst movie as a director ever. I disagree, Inland Empire seems to be his worst one, unwatchable, unless you are under the influence.
