    Christmas Cracker Movies

I wanna get ahead of the game this year with Christmas movie consumption so I have been googling and downloading a festive film feast.

Found Carol (2015) which I had never heard of before, although it is only 5 years old, so I watched it tonight.

Only a first half Christmas themed movie but within the first 5 minutes you know this is going to be one of those movies where you will be savouring the scenes rather than glancing at the clock.

Gorgeous camera work perfect poise from the leading ladies.

Sounds like a hint of seasonal sapphic sour grapes...

The girls may be the more cinematographically and aesthetically palatable end of the rainbow spectrum but please don't be a grumbling grinch.

Here is a cheerful romp to burst your Christmas cockles. Turned this up on the googles. Never heard of it before - Get Santa 2014.

Christmas gets saved by a likely lad, trying to go straight, and his young son, who keeps the faith in Santa when all around him are losing theirs.

Santa gets a deservingly good turn from a proper gent in Jim Broadbent

Booked in as a future festive favourite after one viewing.

I was not aware that Christmas is strictly a heterosexual holiday.
I am the proud father of a beautiful , loving, educated, talented lesbian daughter, in a five year , stable relationship with another wonderful young lady. . She has just as much right to Christmas or anything else ,as you and me.

The fairer sex are fickle creatures as we know Dave

Far be it from me to presume to make any decisions in that department

A woman in her mercurial wisdom will usually make short work of shredding any best laid plans is my experience

I have learned to leave these matters of the female heart in the hands the gods and let Venus and Aphrodite pull the strings

I can shorten the Aphroditean mistletoe odds on Miss Mini Minx a bit

She resurfaced via SMS to say she was coming over when she finished work.

Upon arrival she mummified herself in a blanket and fell into a deep sleep on the sofa.

I had to play my Christmas carols on whisper quiet mode so as not to rouse my little Turin enshrouded Christmas elf from rainbow unicorn land.

The past few years I have watched 2 versions of Scrooge every year

1935 - which I love for its spooky old flickering early cinema film texture

    Christmas Cracker Movies-scrooge1935_icon-jpg

2009 - the computer acted/animated version with Jim Carrey as Scrooge

    scrooge2009.jpg

I am thinking of branching out and taking in some other versions

I have never seen the 1951 version which is supposed to be good

I also have the 1938 and 1970 versions downloaded

I have also read good things on the googles about the movie about Dickens himself - The Man Who Invented Christmas

There is also Scrooged from the 90s. Gets mixed reviews but being a Bill Murray fan I cannot really go past it

Any other versions of note to throw into the mix?

    Which one is your favourite?

I have also got hold of the Blackadder version from 1988 which I have amazingly never seen despite being a Blackadder fan of the TV shows

My all time favourite Christmas movie is Jingle All The Way.

Every year my daughter and I watch this together on Christmas Eve.

Covid has put paid to that this year of course, and it's not on Netflix so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to watch it on my own, which is probably just as well.

Looper, stick this on. Your Miss Mini Minx is sure to wake up for this!

You've gotta have Santa Claus (Dudley Moore) and Home Alone (Macaulay Culkin) on at Christmas.

    Good tips fellas

I had heard of but never seen, until tonight, Polar Express.

It was made by the same guy that made 2009 Scrooge and you can recognise the familiar method of computer acted animation

Jolly good jingly bell stuff although not quite as good as the 2009 Scrooge

Have never seen Miracle on 34th St from 1994 but had to knock off the original before I could tackle the newer version

Kris Kringle is not keeping the faith in Christmas 100% though. In this scene he tells Susan that 'some kids ask for things that are not realistic like a locomotive or a B-29'

What is not realistic about asking for a B-29?

I am no carpet connoisseur but I paid $400 for it which is probably not in hand-woven price territory

Next march it will be 20 years since I humped it back to my humble Sydney hovel to brighten and disguise the dowdy rental carpet and it has been travelling with me on life's journey since then.

Tonight I am watching Scrooged 1988

Quite energetic and frenetic and a good turn from Bill Murray as always but not really a Christmas classic on my scoresheet

Quality Christmas fare to be had in this clever imagination of a cash-strapped writer's-blocked Dickens finding festive inspiration from characters all over London while under the gun to publish in time for the big day

    6633132_landscape.jpg

Christopher Plummer would have made a wonderfully wicked-looking Scrooge if he had ever been invited to play the role in a regular production of the novella.

The waning gibbous moon was rising in the garden as he lectured Dan Steven's Dickens on character development.

    Jingle Jangle

Engaging and sparkly crimbo spectacle from Netflix

Inventive tale of a toy inventor fallen on hard times at the hands of his unscrupulous assistant.

I am not normally the biggest fan of musicals but this ethnically and genderically inclusive firecracker fizzes along with a festively effervescent energy

As uplifting as its levitating steampunk Wall-E toy robot

Operation Christmas Drop is the Christmas movie not to miss if you only watch one Crimbo flick this year

An exploding romantic rainbow of Christmas joyousness rains down from the heavens through the cargo hatch of a mighty C-130 over the atolls of the Pacific

Featuring more glorious US aviation military hardware than Santa has bells on his flying reindeer

Even a still from a vintage B-29 which took part in the earliest historical Operation Christmas Drop

Here is a pic from the real drop of today

Netflix’s Christmas Chronicles and Christmas Chronicles 2 are fun movies. Kurt Russel (heart throb) is Santa and Goldie Hawn is Mrs. Clause.

The second one with Darby Camp was my favorite of the two.

Knocked off the newer one lastnight.

The first 10 minutes seem to lack the vintage charm of the original but be patient for the plot thickens like cream on a mince pie and this worthy successor measures up to the task

Good stuff all round and worth perhaps a biennial rewatch

^It is top stuff and a lucky find from the googles

I knocked of the 1970 Scrooge lastnight

    649e2d5e_scroogeblu.jpg

I was looking forward to it since Albert Finney is one of my favourite actors and he did make a good Scrooge with his chiselled gruff demeanour

But I did not realise until it started that it was a musical

I managed to get to the end by FF>> through the song and dance routines which were eminently forgettable, bland and a PITA (unlike the songs in Jingle Jangle which were rockin around the Christmas tree)

I am going to throttle back on the Scrooge numbers now to keep my powder dry for the 2009 version on or around the hallowed Chrimble eve

One of my oldest Christmas memories was watching National Velvet on Christmas Eve with my sisters... thinking about the memory and the room we were in it must have been about 1977 or 1978. It's not a Christmas Cracker Movie but I'm going to try and watch it this Christmas for old time's sake.

    And then get all maudlin!

Managed to squeeze in a long awaited rewatch of the timeless and evergreen Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton from 1993

Gorgeous stop motion animation from the pre-pixel days of true cartoon craftsmanship

And a wonderful gothic score which the PTX crew picked up on to do a dangerously satanic and un-christian looking video
