    Thousands cancel TV Licenses

Sign of the times? I must admit I have full access to all UK channels and I can't remember the last time I watched the Beeb.

Hundreds of people opted to cancel their TV licence each day over the past five months, figures suggest.

The Times reported the number of licences held across the UK fell by 82,000 in the five months to March this year, citing data obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.

This works out at around 550 per day, on average.

It comes as traditional broadcasters face the threat of streaming platforms and, in the case of the BBC, debate around decriminalising non-payment of the licence fee.

Figures from an Ofcom report from last August suggested he number of UK households signed up to the biggest streaming platforms – Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV and Disney Life – stand at 13.3 million, or 47% of all households.

A BBC spokesman told the paper 91% of the adult population used the BBC every week and its iPlayer platform had recently had record audiences.

On licence numbers, he added: “There will always be fluctuation and March’s figures will include the fact that some people have found it more difficult to pay during lockdown.”

I've got a subscription that includes all the Freeview channels and there really is nothing decent on. I get that they can't make lots of new shows but it's been absoloute trash for months.

Having easy access to Match of the Day was keeping me going.

As essential as a Frey Bentos pie.

Aren't the tories planning to make pensioners pay?

Maybe it's pensioners who are cancelling.

Many pensioners receive income to be able to easily afford a license. So why not? Those under 75 will probably be living with family members so therefore indirectly won't pay either. The over 75 will probably be living in a care home. So no probs there also. Stop posting doom and gloom Cyrille. Nothing wrong with the Tories.

Over 75s need not take immediate action, says TV Licensing. TV Licensing customers over 75 will remain covered by a free TV licence until 31 May 2020. ... Over 1.5 million households with residents aged over 75 could receive free TV Licences funded by the BBC if they receive Pension Credit.

What happens if I tell you I don't need a TV Licence?

We will send you confirmation of your No Licence Needed declaration.

If you tell us you don’t need a licence, we may confirm this with a visit to your address. This is because when we visit and make contact, we find one in six people that tell us they don't need a TV Licence actually do need one. If you are not licensed, you risk prosecution and a fine of up to Ł1,000* plus any legal costs and/or compensation you may be ordered to pay.

*The maximum fine is Ł2,000 in Guernsey.
i finally had enough of paying to watch the bbc when we returned to the uk 4 or 5 years ago, the bbc's well documented "islington leftie bias", its reliance on repeats to fill their schedule and the way they have over represented the concepts of "diversity" and "inclusiveness" to employ presenters and actors in a way that renders them no more than caricatures that stand out like sore thumbs and would quite frankly try the patience of most viewers.

there was the white weather forecaster with one arm, her right arm had been amputated at the elbow and the bbc must have thought they could use her to help fill their diversity quota. ( if they had blacked her up they could have killed two birds with one stone) trouble was, what remained of her right arm had a pronounced twitch and every time she moved her left arm to point at the map, her right stump, conveniently exposed thanks to the short sleeves she was wearing and closer to the camera thanks to the angle she was standing at, twitched violently as though it had been given a strong electric shock and was a great distraction. we were transfixed by this twitch and could not concentrate properly on the forecast.

some link announcers now have the most unintelligible local accents, every drama will now have a character implanted, more often than not with no relevance to the plot, but with mental health, racial, sexual or gender issues, completely out of proportion to the numbers actually present in society. serious dramas become more like monty python or fawlty towers sketches and the public become ever more cynical to the motives behind it.

i watch tv to be entertained, not to have my social conscience pricked by holier than thou producers, programmers and actors and so i filled out the online form that cancels the tv licence and shortly afterwards received a notification from them that gave me 2 years freedom from purchasing a license. 2 years later i received a letter asking if i needed a license, and just repeated the same declaration.

here is the link to the online form to cancel your licence

Aren't you going to include those OAPs who've died as a result of this government's bungling as another sub-group that has 'no probs'?

looking at nevernas video links it would appear that the weather girl has had treatment for the random neurological impulses affecting her stump, the twitch is far less pronounced, especially in the second video.

If the weather lady is qualified to do the job and does the job well then I have no problem with that - good luck to her. If she's not qualified and/or is just shite at her job then that's stupidity.

BTW, I've never found coke to have a "relaxing effect" (although Pepsi might? )

She has a degree in geography and as part of her geography degree, she studied meteorology.

She took part in a BBC initiative that offered disabled people with a passion for weather and the environment the chance to learn about the job. Following a three-day workshop, she was offered the opportunity to start training to be a weather presenter.

More about her here: We speak to disabled BBC weather presenter Lucy Martin

Watching the BBC is only one of the criteria for needing a TV license .

The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:

    • watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
    • watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
    • download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer.

This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS

Watching stuff on streaming sites is ok as long as it's not live.
