Best Laptop / place to buy it in Florida ?

I have a lady friend in Florida who needs a new laptop, but is unsure what to get and where to buy it. As I am Australian and wasn't there for long, I cannot advise her. But I did notice that the types of shop in which I would expect (in Australia) to find a good range of laptops just didn't have a good range of them.

Can anyone give me some general advice on where to buy one there ? She needs it to do a project which will not be too heavy on usage, so I guess that 8 gig of ram will be enough.

    Women !
It's a curly question of her to ask me, really, as I don't know exactly what she is using it for and don't know the market in Florida.....

I know it may sound strange, Try COSTCO if she is a member. She can order online and the price and warranty through COSTCO is outstanding. I have bought 4 Dell laptops (not all for me) through them.

My advice is that there are probably better places to ask for advice on Florida laptop options than a Thai-centric forum with few members resident in Florida (if actually any?) and conversant with such matters.

Try Google if that's what you actually want to know -- though I rather suspect this is all more about leading into another of your cringe-worthy and hollow boasts about rooting etc.

    IF it were me.

    1. It would require a 15" wide screen at least.
    2. I would need one or two screw access to the FAN, for cleaning purposes
    3. It must NOT have Microsoft Windows, any flavour.
    4. It must NOT have touch screen capabilities.
    5. It must have AT LEAST 8gb of RAM
    6. It must have a SSD hard drive, at least 480gb in size.
    7. It must have an INTEL chipset.
    8. I would prefer INTEL graphics.
    9. It must NOT be made by Hewlett Packard.
    10. I would prefer a backlit keyboard.
    11. IT MUST NOT BE N APPLE COMPUTER.

Few other things come to mind, but those are my main points.

I would agree with Ennis on most all points made.
Except if you don't do Windows, that pretty much means Apple and they are too expensive for me.
A few more things I would look for:
More than 2 USB ports (4 minimum)
A long power cable. (they're making shit cheaper and cheaper these days and it sucks to have to run another power strip)
Bluetooth (out of 3 laptops, only one of mine has it)
Fast processor (and NOT Celeron), at least 2.50 speed.

    Yea, same first impression . . . especially the Florida schtick . . . but . . . benefit of the doubt.

    Mac. Easy decision.

We have three MacBook Air (daughters and me), one MacBook Pro (wife) and an iMac (whoever works from home and needs the large screen) - seamless, quality, longevity. (Microsoft Office, of course)

Switched to Apple years ago and wouldn't go back.

What's the big problem about HP? You are not the first to mention them as a non-option.

I don't recommend their low end laptops with Windows 10 but the high end ones are pretty good. I think the Z-Book is an excellent laptop. I have had one for over a year now and it allows access for upgrades to any part. It is probably too high end for the requirements of this lady though. I use Windows 10 for photographic and video applications and run Ubuntu Linux under VMware. You could run this the other way round, as I do on an older HP i5 machine with Win7 (which has been running Linux for years)

The 2020 Macbook Air is good. The basic model is just fine, no upgrades required. She will love you forever (or until she needs a 2021 MacBook Air).

(Of course, it has Intel graphics which are dire, but for light use that's no issue...) Dell stuff and Lennovo stuff is also good and can be bought online easily; deliver to your door...

    Some good input. My comments

IMHO # 3 and # 11 appear to contradict each other

    # 4. I have a 17" Dell touch screen and love it. Makes for scrolling through PDF's very nice and quite efficient

    # 10 is a must.

    Good Luck LD

We changed to Apple 5 years ago and never looked back.

We mainly use a 16" Macbook Pro, and would highly recommend it.

Is she retarded? If so, tell her to get a Mac.

    Otherwise, go to Best Buy.

8gb RAM for an old lady to send emails and watch porn? don't need

buy her an iPad, or go to WallMart or Best Buy if it still exists, any laptop should do, focus on price or style

    or order @ Amazon, easier

    1. check the prices on amazon for the make/models she's interested in.
    2. go to local best buy and/or walmart to compare
    3. buy accordingly

    Yep, # 10 is a must.

Lastly, make sure it's has half decent sound as some of the laptops are crappy/tinny.

    I'm not an Apple fan.

Personally I've gone away from Laptops and into a tablet with an attachable keyboard.

They are usually the size of a 'NetBook' but more flexible.

Once you have whittled it down to a few choices just type the name of the machine and 'review' and google it.

You get reviews like ... Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 - Full Review & Benchmarks | Laptop Mag
... Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro review | TechRadar

    Check the operating system.

Assuming it Windows based, it most likely be Win10, but, what ever you do, don't buy one with Windows 10 S

Windows 10 S is “the soul of today's Windows”, according to Microsoft. It's a new version of Windows intended for school PCs, but available to everyone. It's designed to be more simple and streamlined, so it only runs applications from the Windows Store—unless you spend another $50 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
I tried all the hacks and recommendations on the web to get rid of it, but failed.

People actually use the inbuilt speakers on their laptops?

    That's surprising.
