The "Fuck this Covid shit I'm running out of things to watch" Thread

Once you're up to date with TV and movies, what to do?

How about you paste your top ten recommendations for movies past that others might not have watched?

Please follow this format (see below) - the title, year if needed (to avoid confusing with remakes) and a one line description.

Here's some to tickle your fancy in no particular order:

Let it Ride - superb gambling comedy with Richard Dreyfuss and Robbie Coltrane (hard to find)

Sexy Beast - a brilliantly evil Ben Kingsley is the flake in this Ray Winstone gangster 99.

Layer Cake - Daniel Craig the drug dealer that probably got him the Bond role (I read that in GQ today funnily enough).

House of Games - Clever David Mamet grifter movie

The Thing - John Carpenter's Alien (1982, not the shit remake), and it would be remiss to leave out:

They Live - Another Carpenter classic that Alex Jones probably watched as a kid.

The Verdict - Awesome Sidney Lumet Legal drama, Paul Newman's best role as a drunk ambulance chaser

The Boys from Brazil - Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier's last stand in a Nazi hunter thriller

Mr. Brooks - Stylish and engaging Kevin Costner serial killer flick

Manhunter - The 1986 (thus first) version of Red Dragon directed by Michael Mann

N.B. The purpose of this thread is not to critique said movies, merely to offer suggestions to others. It really doesn't matter if you don't like other peoples' selections. If you disagree, just ignore them.

    A remake?

I think it was a prequel. Even had the radio operator ending up in the same position as the original. Unless there was a remake I wasn't aware of?

And yes, They Live. A funky low budget movie that Moho would enjoy. The soundtrack is non-distinct but fits well.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

If you have not seen it, Hidden Figures is a good watch. Probably the only movie where I find Kevin Costner bearable.

    Okay, just saw this.

Courtroom drama: 12 angry men, often comes up in best movies ever lists.
Horror: Jacob's Ladder, 1990 and you can see how many plot twist films stole the ideas. To name the films that stole from this would be a spoiler.
Sports: Rollerball, made in 1975 with no CGI it's pretty brutal for the technology
Comedy: What We Do In The Shadows, very clever movie, some defo don't get the quirky Kiwi humour.

I think you're talking about "The Thing from Another World" which was the 1951 original - well spotted.

However, I was talking about "The Thing" 2011 which was a pile of shit, and was a remake disguised as a prequel.

-> Haven't seen that, good call.

-> A brilliant film that they laughably remade.

Yikes - you are in for a great movie.

Some early Hitchcock if you are not up on them. Rear Window, Vertigo etc.

The Killing (1956) Cool film noir directed by Stanley Kubrick. Starring Sterling Hayden.

Caught this by chance on TCM the other day and wondered why I had never seen or heard of it before. Great movie.

Apocalypto: Watched it a couple of times, never been keen on Mel Gibson but this was a job well done and he deserves credit for unfurling this action packed, gory adventure of one young man during the Mayan decline.

imdb says 7.8, I round it up to 8/10

Blade Runner & Tron sequels were both good.

Both classic sci-fi movies and took years before anyone tried to make sequels to match them, and both good efforts.

Side note: If you a capable sound system, Tron sequel is especially a good listen.

And after you've watched yet another formulaic super hero movie...

Plot spoiler for (insert every superhero movie ever) Movie starts with Superhero displaying skills, later superhero meets villain(s) and loses, superhero comes back to triumph in final epic battle.

Look at Watchmen for some good anti-super hero goodness.
There's also a new series called 'The Boys'. Only watched the first episode, but it looks like good super-anti-super-hero fare.

    ^^

Certainly there's a place for 'switch your brain off and sip some single malt to enhance the suspension of disbelief that is mandatory to watch yet another by the numbers superhero crusade on a Sunday afternoon' movies. Just think the OP was looking for something a bit different.
