    In-car audio from phone

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I had a search and couldn't find anything...

I know there are several tech'd up people on this board... some advice please!

This is my current audio system in my 13 year-old Vigo... I haven't used it since the CD player packed up a couple of years ago.

My feeling is that this is probably a bit dated now anyway.

I currently listen to music and radio via Spotify or BBC Sounds on my phone (4G) when driving, but the sound quality isn't great.

Is there any easy way I can get my 80s compilations and Radio Somerset to play through the car speakers from my phone?

    Thanks in advance...

Bluetooth is the easiest presuming you have it?

If not it's relatively cheap 'n easy to have it installed or replace the head unit with a Bluetooth model.

^ I have Bluetooth on the phone and play music/radio through Bluetooth speakers when at home.

So, I could get some kind of Bluetooth receiver in place of my antiquated CD/cassette player in the car?

A Bluetooth receiver connected to a 3.5mm jack, then just plug that into the 3.5mm jack AUX port for the truck's radio.

Can't imagine your truck doesn't have a 3.5mm aux port, but it isn't in the pic and there's no 'Aux' button visible. But it does say MP3. Is it in between the seats near the handbrake?

Yep, spot on. Since yours is broken anyway you could just replace it. I had this one installed in my Datsun a while back:

They aren't that expensive these days (though I can't remember right now what we paid for that one).

Lulu's idea is another option if you don't want to go that route or you could even just take a portable Bluetooth speaker with you in the car -- I do that with one of mine in NZ, works fine

I use the lulu method in my 7 year old Vios. I will get a picture up after work. Just a cord with one point prong on both ends, one into the aux input, the other into your phone like for headphones. No bluetooth involved for me at all.

Yup, mentioned that. Sometimes it's located between the seats near the handbrake, it is in one of our cars.

USB ports are often found there as well. I used to use a USB stick for my tunes before I figured out how to do Spotify from my phone, better but it does go out without GSM coverage. More in the states than here.

Yeah, what's forgetting nearly half a decade of ownership when trying to boast about your car.

But yeah, if there is a 3.5mm jack input, just buy a double ended 3.5mm jack cable from Big C for 100thb and plug it in that way.

I'm with Ant, Just swap in a newer head unit with BT and then life is easy and no dangling cords all over the place . Plus depending on your phone model the jack location makes it messy to plug in a cord.

I drop my phone into a Haco wireless phone charger holder and set up and fire up Spotify. I also have a USB that I have thousands of songs from numerous genres.

You do not need to get a new head unit. Just get one of these. Plugs into the cig lighter and plays your music through the FM radio.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

In some ways I don't want to spend too much on a 13 year-old car, but on the other hand it has a 3 litre engine, it's done only 120,000 km and if I look after it, should be good for the same again, at least.

I've searched high and low for an audio jack... but no sign of one (bear in mind I'm not so technical...)

This is what I've got between the seats...

    And under the audio unit...

And as I look at these pics I've become very aware of how filthy the inside of my car looks (before I get any comments...).

Will there definitely be an audio jack somewhere?

If I go Ant's way and replace the current unit with a Bluetooth model, does that mean getting it fitted by Toyota or could I buy one and do it myself? Are they all standard sizes? I don't want anything fancy with video and stuff - just purely to get audio from my phone to the car speakers.

^ My phone goes into the little empty compartment at the bottom right of the audio unit, after being plugged in to charge from the cigarette lighter. If I'm using Google Maps for satnav, the phone is stuck to the two blobs of Bluetack to the immediate right of the audio unit!

It's a relatively simple job but if you're not very technical minded best to get someone else to do it. A Toyota service center probably could or any car audio place, wouldn't take long either.

There is also a full range of options so you could just get a basic unit no muss no fuss.

That is probably the most economic way to do it. I have heard of those sometime back. Never seen how they work. Good one Snubs

So that begs the question. If you really plan on keeping the truck for another 10+ years and you like quality and clarity of your tunes then I'd swap out the head. Anywhere you buy it, they will install and dirt cheap or in some cases free. Let them do it. I just added a complete new Head unit to my 2016 Revo as I plan on keeping the truck until I drives the wheels off it. That said, I like my music to sound good not just play.

Yup, if no 3.5mm jack, go to a car audio place that specializes in that kinda stuff. Wouldn't go to a Toyota dealer, much more likely to get better quality at a better price with better options at a shop that specializes in it.
