    Portable WiFi soundsystem

There's every chance this idea is completely bananas, and no doubt with Teakdoor's brutal honesty, I will be told so, but...
I do quite a bit of traveling and I want a WiFi connected soundsystem for listening to YouTube, for example, while lounging in hotel rooms.
I've been told I can connect a sim-less Smartphone to a soundbar and this will do the trick.
    Will this work?
Does anybody have a recommendation for a cheap Smartphone which will do this and of a cheap soundbar which will sound OK?
Also shops in Bangkok or Pattaya where I can buy the necessaries.
    Thanks.

Any smartphone with Bluetooth and a decent portable speaker will do the trick.

Fortune Town at Phra Ram 9 station has thousands to choose from, I quite like JBL myself.

    https://uk.jbl.com/bluetooth-portables/

Assuming you have a Smartphone, Player Pro is a good music player, Player FM is a great podcast player, and XiiaLive or TuneIn will do you for Internet radio.

    Cheers chaps.
    All good replies.
Bluetooth speakers look like the way to go. No trailey-wirey things.
The JBL selection looks interesting, and some very packable.
I haven't got a Smartphone, still being on the two tin-cans and a piece of string method of communication, so that's another area of technology I'll need to find out about.
I'm not interested in multiple cameras, multiple mega-pixels or large storage, so I hope to find a basic 'phone at a lowish price which will run the internet at a steady speed.

I'll have a look at Baldrick's cunning plan of getting a tablet.
I don't know much about them, but will find out.

The speakers suggested by Pragmatic are at an even lower price than the cheapest I was thinking of.
I prefer going to a shop really, but could try the online shopping thing.

Any of the IT sections ofthe malls have shit loads of bluetooth or usb mini speakers and you can get the assistant to spin them up for a listen or if you bring your phone they'll set up the bluetooth for you if you aren't tech savvy

then the bluetooth options are not going to be feasible unless you put your music on a microsd card or USB stick to use with it - and of course you get a speaker that uses them

get a tablet and a bluetooth speaker and you will be sorted

    I have a xiaomi - https://www.lazada.co.th/catalog/?fr...location=local

and if you get the LTE version you can use it with a sim card with data to access the internet anywhere and not just with wifi

I also have the xiaomi bluetooth speaker - https://www.lazada.co.th/products/xi...315686586.html

Doesn't matter if you don't have a smartphone. Most of the cheap bluetooth speakers come with a micro SD and USB slot meaning you can plug and play.

    --EDIT--

    Basically what Baldric said.

I don't think you'll regret it. My missus also has one and she swears by the BT connection from her phone.

It's a JBL copy that. I'm not doubting it's capabilities though, having listened to my Chinese earphones

Was only kidding about hunting you down,, Prag.. I know you were in the Army

I am actually agreeing with you.

Although, a mobile phone is loud enough on its own in a hotel room. Stick it in a glass to amplify it

Get a bigger glass. Most phones are waterproof nowadays. Can get your steradent, gnashers and phone in there. The vibration and battery àcid will whiten them too

    I'll check this out online.
Also to be checked out is if a tablet can access WiFi without a sim.

You don't need a SIM or a phone or a tablet (phone and tablet will work well), you don't even need bluetooth/wireless connection to a speaker.

Where do you keep your music? If it's just music then some folks like to keep it all in one place on something like an iPod touch (then you don't need to buy a smartphone) or similar:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPod-...Condition=1000

You can also access Youtube. There are many players, some are very cheap (Chinese stuff), so you don't have to buy Apple products.

So, that's just your music storage and playing Youtube videos, etc, by accessing a wifi source. Easy.

Next, how are you going to listen to it?

In a hotel, I wouldn't want to bother people in other rooms with the sound, and I like the music quite loud, so I'd just plug some headphones into the iPod Touch/smartphone/tablet. Easy.

If you want the freedom of not having a wire connection to your source music then get some bluetooth headphones.

If you don't care about bothering other folks with your music then get a portable speaker. These can be bluetooth connected to your wireless source, but they can also connect via a wire, like your headphones do (same input).

All these solutions are good, all are slightly different, they just depend on your personal needs. For example, if you like watching the video then a tablet gives you a bigger screen. If you don't really watch the video, you just listen to the music then an iPod touch or smartphone has a smaller, less clear screen (usually) which could suit that needs. If you have your own music then you might not need a screen at all.

But, it sounds like you want to wifi to watch videos rather than listening to music, then you are in the realms of which tablet to get... Some higher priced phones/tablets may have inbuilt speakers that sound good enough for your needs - check them out. For example, my Macbook has good enough sound that I don't connect to a wireless speaker when playing music/videos on it - many tablets and smartphones also have good quality sound/speakers.

Do you need/want a smartphone for other purposes? If so, then you might as well get a smartphone to do everything, but it will cost more (tablets can be quite expensive too).

Make sure you detail your needs otherwise you might buy the wrong type of device. There are loads of good options at every price point for music/video source devices and headphones/speaker.
