BBC and ITV join forces to launch new streaming channel showing classic shows

The BBC and ITV have teamed up to take on launching a new streaming service that could rival Netflix, it has been reported.

According to the Sunday Times, the terrestrial channels have joined forces to bring their classic shows to viewers at the touch of a button.

Fans of shows such as Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers and Midsomer Murders will be able to watch the classic shows on the planned subscription service. The paper reports that both broadcasters have been in negotiations for over a year about launching a service that will stream all their archive sitcoms and shows which they hope will rival Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

It is believed to have taken inspiration from Britbox, a joint BBC-ITV streaming platform that launched in America two years ago and has attracted more than 400,000 paying subscribers. A formal announcement is expected on Wednesday to coincide with ITV’s annual results.

The new streaming service is expected to run alongside the free catch-up platforms iPlayer and ITV Hub.

The new streaming service is expected to run alongside the free catch-up platforms iPlayer and ITV Hub. Netflix rival The subscription service would charge for archive shows and it has been suggested it could cost viewers £5 a month.

Speaking to the Times earlier this month, Kevin Lygo, ITV’s director of television, indicated the importance of the project and said: “It seems mad that we can’t make our archive and the BBC’s archive available to people at the press of a button.”

But analysts are sceptical about the launch, particularly as almost 10 million British homes already subscribe to Netflix. Tom Harrington, of Enders Analysis, told the paper: “Will households with Netflix and Amazon think they really need a third one?”

It also streams Netflix originals in films and TV. Not perfect, but better than U.K. Gold.

Dunno how you can compare Netflix to a channel created solely to show repeats.

And it streams an absolute shitload of old stuff like Friends.

Because it streams an absolute shitload of old stuff like Friends.

BBC and ITV don't need to add new content to this: As the article states, they already have that covered with iPlayer and ITV Hub.

I do get your point though; I'm guessing this is a joint venture because they can then share the risk of it failing.

Netflix version is available in Thailand, but you need a VPN to watch it in indonesia. I player et al only work abroad with a VPN.

Content is debatable whichever source you use.

The BBC have to do something to raise revenue as people are cancelling their licence fee as it's not compulsory any more.
They are even scraping the free licence for over 75s, that's how desperate they are.
The BBC have had easy endless money for far too long and people are ditching them in droves now.

The BBC and ITV have announced that they’re bringing a premium streaming service to the UK at the end of the year. BritBox is already available in the U.S. and Canada but will now launch in the UK sometime between October and the end of December. The two firms plan to charge £5.99 per month which will give users access to HD content, that’s the same price Netflix charges to watch content in standard definition (SD).

BritBox will feature archived content from BBC and ITV as well shows that are still on-going. The BBC also revealed that it will be making new shows made specially for BritBox, the first of which is scheduled to arrive next year. The announcement also said that BritBox will be an ITV-controlled venture but that the BBC will “contribute to the development … of the venture”. Overall, ITV will hold 90% of the equity, while BBC will hold the other 10% with the option of increasing that to 25% over time. ITV will also have the option to bring other investors on board.

So you think the entire content will consist of two BBC comedy series.

Statistics suggest you're a bit fucking thick.

The BBC sold the rights to all their classic programs to Netflix and shot themselves in the foot.

    FYI...

After months of anticipation, streaming service BritBox has finally gone live. It’s being called the UK version of Netflix and it contains classic and new shows from ITV, BBC and soon Channel 4.

On the site you can binge watch every season of Love Island, every crime and period drama you can think of and there’s a whole section dedicated to David Attenborough.
Here is every show that is on BritBox, and how to start your subscription.

    What is on BritBox?

The layout of the BritBox site is a bit confusing to get your head around at first, but the homepage is categorised into: dramas, comedies, crime shows, documentaries, lifestyle shows, mysteries, reality TV, thrillers, true stories and period dramas. You can also browse by decade the show was released / is based in and by your favourite actors.

Featured boxsets on the homepage include: Broadchurch, House of Cards, Life on Mars, Happy Valley, Prime Suspect, Wolf Hall, Band of Gold, Inspector Morse, Pride and Prejudice, Spooks and Cold Feet.

There are also categories called “nature programmes” such as Weird Wonders of The World, “loved up” for shows like Ibiza Weekender,
TOWIE, Love Island (every season!!!!!) and Cutting It, “LGBTQ picks” including Tipping the Velvet and This Life and the “period dramas” are series such as Downton Abbey, Jane Eyre and Sense and Sensibility.

Featured actors includes a Sheridan Smith collection of all the BBC and ITV shows she’s been in such as: Cilla, The Royle Family, Mrs Biggs, Cleaning Up and Lark Rise to Candleford.

There’s an entire section for comedy box sets such as
Gavin and Stacey, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Plebs, Absolutely Fabulous, The Two Ronnies and Keeping Up Appearances.

BritBox contains every single detective show you could possibly want. Think Whitechapel, Marcella, Vera, Scott and Bailey and Grantchester – they’re all there, amongst others. There are also a whole bunch of thriller shows such as Cheat – which aired on ITV this year and is about a dangerous relationship between a university professor and her student.

You can also watch celebrity special programmes in the “celebrity road trip” category which contains Top Gear, David Beckham: Into the Unknown, Idris Elba: King of Speed and cooking shows with Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo and Fred from First Dates.

There are also loads of old-school British films like the Carry On films, classic Jungle Book and classic Oliver Twist. And of course, there is a full section dedicated to David Attenborough shows. BritBox is packed with loads of stuff you can’t watch anywhere else.

Channel 4 is coming next year, promising more than a thousand hours of programmes and films.

    How can I get BritBox?

All you need to do is go to the BritBox website and sign up with your name, email address and card details for the subscription.

How much does a BritBox subscription cost?

You can sign up on the website and get a 30 day free trial and then after that the subscription is £5.99 a month – the same as a the lowest grade Netflix account.

Do you need a TV license to watch BritBox?

According to Money Saving Expert, ITV has confirmed you will NOT need a TV license to watch BritBox. Hooray!!!
