It looks like nobody really gives a shit.
Best Picture: The Shape Of Water (Feelgood stuff when the US is in the toilet. This year's Forrest Gump...but actually good)
Best Director: Del Toro
Best Actor: Gary Oldman (some roles are just constructed to result in Oscars)
Best Actress: Frances McDormand (just the standout performance)
which attendee will grace the red carpet the most smacked out on cocaine , alcohol , anti depressants and tranquilisers ?
who will display they are wearing no panties ?
which arse will have cornered the botox market ?
which actor will not be wearing some sort of #meeetoooo ribbion or similar display of solidarity to prostitution everywhere ?
and why should they?
i have to admit that years ago i would give some attention to this sort of nonsense, but not any longer.....it's just too vacuous to merit attention beyond quickly scanning a headline....and thinking "hmmm.... maybe i'll download that later".
honestly, who gives a shit which actor out of 5 gets the most approval from other people in the film industry? the people nominated and their families have a vested interest in the outcome because it will improve their prospects...but why some housefrau in des moines would be transfixed by this spectacle is beyond me.
and if we're going to look at it pragmatically (and perhaps cynically), the entire production is nothing more than a marketing campaign designed to increase ticket sales and move merchandise.
and let me be clear....for those who work in the industry i don't begrudge them their night to recognize the best of their profession....i just don't see why anyone else should care.
Bet a couple of coloureds get one this year.
I watched this tonight.
Quirky, original and stylish with good individual performances but totally lacking in substance or anything interesting to say as a story.
2nd year in a row the winner has been very average and unexceptional.
Edit: actually I think it is the 3rd year in a row, since that rather gay-arsed musical was the winner 2 years ago I think.
Oldman got best actor, so wife beaters are back in fashion.
Oh and Janney and Rockwell got the supporting nods.
Who is in the running? I haven't looked into it this year.
Haven't seen the best pic show you mentioned.
Best Picture: The Shape of Water.
Bookies win that one.
Added: Looks like they got the right envelope this time.
Thanks, Harry.
I've only seen Ladybird and I, Tonya, so it is hard for me to pick a winner. Lady bird wasn't all that great.
Allison Janney, “I, Tonya” was a fantastic actress, but I haven't seen the other movies to compare.
I doubt I'll watch the Oscars this year...
