    The Concubine - 2012

Downloaded this Korean period royal drama ages ago for the reputed shagging scenes.

There are a few shagging scenes but not quite as much as I had hoped.

The royal dogging scene is quite funny though!

The girl is not that cute. Nice firm breasts but her mouth is too small and her face is not trustworthy.

The movie itself is quite good. Beautfully filmed with quite a convoluted palace intrigue plotline.

On the whole quite good fun but not essential viewing.

    6.8/10

    Parasite

Quirky black comedy about a poor family in Seoul inveigling their way into the lives of a rich family.

It is being touted as Oscar material. I am not quite seeing that myself but it is good fun. Original and definitely worth a couple of hours.

    7.5/10

I agree, it's a good film but they are overdoing the praise somewhat. No doubt a Hollywood version is in the works.

^^ Watched it 2 nights back.

Good film, but I wouldn't say it is Oscar material.

I've heard nothing but great reviews of this film. Not long ago they won a Golden Globe for best Motion Picture - Foreign Language.
And I'm watching the Oscar's right now and he just won for best screenplay and wouldn't be surprised if they win more awards tonight. I can't wait to see this movie!!! It never came to my small city, and I missed it elsewhere.

Parasite is the first foreign film to win Best Picture in 92 years!

The South Korean film Old Boy. The ultimate revenge movie that's better than the English language adaption.

    Holy smokers!

Oscars 2020: South Korea's Parasite makes history by winning best picture

Oscars 2020: South Korea's Parasite makes history by winning best picture - BBC News

I thought they meant Foreign Language category when they said Oscar nomination.

I was gobsmacked to see it was even nominated in the main category lastnight.

I was then flabbergasted this morning to see it win.

It is good but there have been many better FL films in recent years that have not had a sniff at a prize.

    ^ All for show.

A very (very) good film, but not a masterpiece.

When discussing this film, is there anyone here willing to give an example of cinematic brilliance that has trodden on new ground?

It has a good narrative and mirrors a lot of Korean films, such as Oldboy and Train to Busan.

If talking about foreign films, then I would rate City of God (Brazil), Seven Samauri (Japan), Kung Fu Hustle (China), Battle Royale (Japan Again) and even The Raid (Indonesia) above this.

Nice nudie Italian film, good fun with happy go lucky uplifting feel
Paprika decides to do a two week stink in a brothel to help her boyfriend out, or something..
Amazing looking at the women's curvy body shape and how , despite being only 30 years ago , were so different from many of today's ladies

    I would rate

    The Second Mother (2015 Brazil)

    higher than Parasite.

The Second Mother (2015 film) - Wikipedia

This film also deals with a class clash between a home help (and her offspring) and the family who employ her. Very intelligent movie. More nuanced and layered than Parasite.

Old Boy is a great movie actually.

After seeing Parasite win at the Oscar's last night, I was determined to watch Parasite, so I downloaded it from Pirate Bay and watched it this morning.
It wasn't at all what I expected as they don't show much at all in the trailer about what the movie is about. The ending is just twisted. Parasite isn't your typical Oscar type of movie and I was wondering how they decided to pick that movie for Best picture. There were a lot of other good movies in the running, so how they made their decision for Best Picture is something I wonder about. It was a good movie, but not sure about an Oscar.

A lot of the scenes in the movie brought back memories of my three years living in Seoul. The boys sitting outside under that exact color of umbrella drinking soju, the spitting on the ground, the man peeing on the ground in plain site after a drunken night of drinking soju. These are all pretty realistic things. The rest was crazy. I'm not a big horror fan, so that part kind of turned my stomach.

    That looks interesting. lol.

On the opposite end of the spectrum.

This movie is about a girl named Nisha who is the daughter of a Pakistani-Norwegian family who lives a double life. She is kidnapped by her parents and sent to Pakistan when her father finds her in bed with a man. This movie makes me appreciate being a woman raised in a country like Canada.

    Kuroneko (1968)

Black cat, a Japanese ghost film: women with a touch of cat DNA, hunt samurai down .
Fantastically stylish in places and a wonderful antedode if you're surrounded by mostly uncouth, loud, fat arsed, foul mouthed females.
These ladies glide around with exquisite deportment ; the dumb samurai can't believe their luck, and then..

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu)

Finally got round to watching this lusty lesbian clam-buster from 2019

Smouldering slow burn cinema that can only be done properly by the French

Worth the wait to the shuddering climax

Haven't seen weapons grade hairy armpits like that on a lady for a while

    8.3/10

    La Belle Noiseuse

Classic French cinema with a retired artist coming out of retirement to paint a (mostly naked) young woman.

It is 4 hours long but Emmanuelle Beart, playing the young muse, spends most of that time in her birthday suit so the time flies.

The artist's wife is played by Jane Birkin and when I googled her I was reminded of the French classic Manon De Source in which she stars

So tonight I watched part 1 Jean De Florette which I have not seen in over 30 years

A young Depardieu plays the cursed hunchback on a futile quest to bring water to his sabotaged land.
