Review a Movie from at least 10 Years Ago

To open this thread I thought I would break the rules and review a movie from only 9 years ago

A Prairie Home Companion - Robert Altman

    Woody Harrelson
    Kevin Kline
    Meryl Streep
    Tommy Lee Jones

...although the real star is Garrison Keillor

Original idea about the last night of a radio broadcast variety theatre show.

The characters are intertwined and well developed within the time contraints. The story has mystical elements with an 'angel' presiding over proceedings.

    Recommended.

I can't be arsed writing a synopsis but they are good old movies

    The Ice Storm - 1997
In the weekend after thanksgiving 1973 the Hoods are skidding out of control. Benjamin Hood reels from drink to drink, trying not to think about his trouble at the office. His wife, Elena, is reading self help books and losing patience with her husband's lies. Their son, Paul, home for the holidays, escapes to the city to pursue an alluring rich girl from his prep school. And young, budding nymphomaniac, Wendy Hood roams the neighborhood, innocently exploring liquor cabinets and lingerie drawers of her friends' parents, looking for something new. Then an ice storm hits, the worst in a century. Things get bad...
The Last Picture Show (1971) - Cybil shepherd is hot.
A group of 1950s high schoolers come of age in a bleak, isolated, atrophied West Texas town that is slowly dying, both economically and culturally

    Catch 22 (1970)
A bombardier in World War II tries desperately to escape the insanity of the war. However, sometimes insanity is the only sane way cope with a crazy situation. Catch-22 is a parody of a "military mentality" and of a bureaucratic society in general.

One I pull out occasionally is Vanishing Point (1971), the story of a 'disgraced' former cop delivering cars who becomes a bit of a cult hero as he evades capture.

The ending was a stunner and I still sit there wondering what to make of it.

Probably the only good thing Barry Newman ever made.

Set the tone for a whole heap of '70's movies.

Dersu Uzala by Akiro Kurosawa affected me deeply. Also Dreams by Kurosawa....though a couple of the vignettes drag on a bit.

Dersu Uzala ( alternate U.S. title: Dersu Uzala: The Hunter) is a 1975 Soviet-Japanese co-production film directed by Akira Kurosawa, his first non-Japanese-language film and his first and only 70mm film. The film won the Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival[1] and the 1976 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.[2] The film is based on the 1923 memoir Dersu Uzala (which took his name by the native trapper) by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, about his exploration of the Sikhote-Alin region of the Russian Far East over the course of multiple expeditions in the early 20th century.
The film is almost entirely shot outdoors in the Russian Far East wilderness. The film explores the theme of a native of the forests who is fully integrated into his environment, leading a style of life that will inevitably be destroyed by the advance of civilization. It is also about the growth of respect and deep friendship between two men of profoundly different backgrounds, and about the difficulty of coping with the loss of strength and ability that comes with old age.
The film sold 20.4 million tickets in the Soviet Union and made $1.2 million in the US and Canada.[3]

I thought I'd find and post a Youtube link to the whole film, but they all seem to lead to other sites, or else they're short sections only.

^ I've seen Dreams and really enjoyed it. Keep thinking one day I will watch it again. Downloading Dersu Uzala now. Found it on Pirate Bay, but reviews say the quality is not good. Will see.

Another old Japanese movie just viewed was Vengence Is Mine. True crime story about a murderer on a killing spree while fleeing the cops. Good one.

    Wizard of Oz

A young girl is magically transported to a far away land.
She kills the first person she meets, teams up with 3 accomplices and goes on to kill again..

    Electra Glide in Blue (1973)

Cops, drugs, hippies and the coolest bike ever made.
A pro establishment film made during the hippie wars.

    Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

Classic Clint and Bridges maybe one of his best roles.
Road trip, Bank Heist, Double Crosses, has it all.

"The Hill". 1965. B&W. Sean Connery as a British Army Sergeant Major sent to an army detention center in the Libyan desert during WW2 after being charged with cowardice. One of my favorite WW2 movies of all time.

Never even heard of The Hill.....will look it up, with that strong recommendation. Apart from his 007 films, I enjoyed Connery in Zardoz...a science fiction/fantasy. Though his get-up is a bit gay.

It's a great film. Just make sure you get the Kurosawa version...I think there may have been a Russian version also.

    Soldier Blue:

One of the most divisive American movies. A revisionist look at American history. A brutal indictment of the Sand Creek Massacre.

    Memorable song. Tits also.

The Winslow Boy - 1948 version of course.

Fine British acting of the era.

I thought the interaction between the characters was fluid, dynamic and transcendent. It was one of those rare movies that lifts you up and carries you along.

There are some good suggestions on this thread.

    Thanks.

Good thread Looper! Good ideas for future viewing.

Have to agree with Koojo on this one, Prairie Home Companion was boring as fuck. I lived in Minneapolis in the seventies when the Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor was on public radio there. It was boring as fuck then, unless you enjoy doofus Norwegian humor which is only semi popular even in Minnesota.

^Agree on both counts....great thread. I'd rather watch paint dry than Prairie Home Companion.

"Cross of Iron". 1977. Directed by Pekinpah. Starring James Coburn in one of his best performances.

Germans fighting Russians on the Eastern Front in the final days of WW2. Coburn as the cynical, war-weary Sergeant pitted against an officer from a Prussian military family who is seeking to win an Iron Cross before the war ends.

A lesser-known WW2 movie, but in my opinion one of the best.

    The Long Good Friday

Brit Mobster ends up crossing the IRA. Bob Hoskins at his best.

'The Shining' was good. One of those rare instances where I read the book before going to the movie.

This is one of Jack Nicholson's finest. The location is spectacular too.
