    The Haunting (1963)

    Snippets from Wiki.

The Haunting is a 1963 British psychological horror film directed and produced by Robert Wise. It stars Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, and Russ Tamblyn. The film, about a small group of people invited by a paranormal investigator to stay at a haunted house that comes to life, is often cited as one of the most frightening films ever made.

During the shoot, Harris suffered from depression, and believed that her co-stars did not take the film as seriously as she did. At times, she would cry in her makeup chair prior to the day's shoot. Bloom did not speak to Harris while filming continued, which worsened her depression. Afterward, Bloom told Harris that the lack of interaction had helped her build her own performance and the two women reconciled. Harris incorporated her own depression into her performance.

Wise heightened the sense of character conflict by having the characters "step on one another's lines", allowing one character to begin talking before the other had finished. On occasion, the characters simply talk at the same time.
To enhance the actors' performances during scenes in which they react to off-stage voices or sounds, Wise and his sound editors created a "pre-scored" soundtrack of voices and noises. These were played back during filming, and Wise says they greatly enhanced the acting performances. Although some sounds were replaced during post-production, the "pre-scored" sounds were left on the soundtrack just as the actors heard them.

Many of the editing choices in the film are also used to heighten the audience's discomfort. There are a number of rapid cuts in the film that throw off the viewer's sense of spatial orientation, and Dutch angles are used to imply that reality is off-kilter. Cutting on action—showing the characters exiting a room to the right, only to show them entering the next room from the left—is often violated, so that the viewer cannot get a clear sense of which rooms and hallways are connected to one another.

The film's stature and following has grown steadily since its original release, and it now has cult movie status. Director Martin Scorsese placed The Haunting first on his list of the 11 scariest horror films of all time. Richard Johnson says that Steven Spielberg considers The Haunting one of the "seminal films" of his youth, and Robert Wise says that Spielberg told him The Haunting was "the scariest film ever made!" Richard Armstrong in Rough Guide to Film (2007) called it "one of the most frightening films ever made", and said Julie Harris' performance is played "with an intensity that is frightening in itself".

Was reading something about the Sex Pistols and thought I should watch Sid and Nancy again so I downloaded it only to realise within 5 minutes of the start that I had never seen it before. How is that possible since I was a Sex Pistols nut when I was at school and watched The Swindle about 100 times?

Gary Oldman's breakthrough role feels authentic. The strange chaos and nihilism of the punk scene is recreated well as are various famous live performance scenes.

Probably only of interest to fans of the pistols and punk scene in general.

Strange to think that in 6 months it will be the 40th anniversary of the Sex Pistol's first gig.

Courtney Love auditioned well for the part of Nancy Spungen apparently but lost out due to lack of acting experience although she appears in a cafe scene as a friend of Spungen in a role Cox created just to get her in the movie.

One From the Heart (1981) - Francis Ford Coppola

A sleeper from America's greatest director. Some of the best music ever on film using the talents of Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. The sets are amazing. Las Vegas is the backdrop for two down on their luck lovers. Very stylized like a lot of early Coppola films if you don't like sentimentality give it a pass but if you like movie magic this one's for you.

^ Gonna take a look at that one.

    Slingblade 1996

Somehow in my travels, I missed this one when it came out.

Billy Bob Thornton goes full retard as Karl Childers, mentally disabled man who has spent most of his life in a mental hospital for a double murder. After his release, he is befriended by a young fatherless boy and taken into their home by the boys mother. Karl is not pleased with the way the mother's abusive boyfriend treats the family.

^Thankyou Misskit. This is what I am looking for. Movies that slipped under the radar. I have never heard of Slingblade either but I will watch anything with BBT in it.

^ When you look for it, look for two words not one as I have written above. My bad.

^ Sling Blade (1996). Let's give full credit to Billy Bob Thornton who also wrote and directed it. Before Angelina Jolie, 30 pounds heavier and without toupee.

Play Misty for Me (1971) directed by Clint Eastwood

Clint's first film, an homage to his mentor Don Siegal who has a cameo role as the bartender.
Great flick but a little dated. Jessica Walter plays a schizophrenic chick obsessed with Clint, a local DJ. Entirely filmed in Carmel, CA.

If you're a fan of Blake Edwards, I always thought one of his funniest was Skin Deep, with John Ritter.

Might resonate with a few on here.

A womanizing, drunken, allelic writer, whose life seems to be falling apart at the seams, repeatedly finds himself in trouble of one sort or another with the law, ex-girlfriends, and jealous boyfriends.

The Piano, ticks all the boxes with scenery (NZ), with Sam Neil, Harvey Kartel and the brilliant Holly Hunter.
The soundtrack is the best of any movie I have yet to hear.

'Range' is for an American to do Hamlet. Playing a redneck dimwit was a walk in the park.

In case anyone has missed this one. Good one to watch a second time. Recent discovery for myself.

    Boogie Nights 1997

Great flick. Story of a teenage bus-boy (Mark Walberg) who is discovered by porn director (Burt Reynolds) during the late '70's. The teen's good looks, enthusiasm and huge penis makes him a star.

One of the best scenes ever: Rahad Jackon (Alfred Molina) walking around in a pair of red speedos and silver robe, while a Chinese man throws firecrackers in the house and a dodgy drug deal is being made. Tense. Hilarious.

Bit rough. It had been voice-dubbed in French, which was very loud and drowned out the English. And, about 1/2 through, I realized that I had seen it years ago.

    Still watched it through, though....

Speaking of Burt Reynolds, years ago I enjoyed The Man Who Loved Women.

    Amusing.

The Internecine Project (1974, James Coburn).

I must dig this out again, a very clever film where James Coburn sets up an ingenious plan to get four people that are a threat to him to kill each other during one night.

It's only going back and looking for it I discovered it was written by Barry Levinson.

Another one for Davis Knowlton I think.

I remember boogie nights when it came out but I never did see it.

I am sticking with your recommendations all the way after Sling Blade so will download this weekend.

Also a young Anna Paquin, in her first acting role- better known now as Sookie, from True Blood.

    Some Australiana-

Walkabout, 1971, Jenny Agutter. Barebones plot (no spoilers)- two kids get stranded in the Australian outback, and go walkabout with the aboriginal boy that saves them. Beautifully shot, gives a real sense of the timelessness, endlessness, even spirituality of the Aussie outback. I've always found this flick quite moving.

The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, 1972- an irreverent comedy that takes the piss out of the poms (aussie national habit). And aussies, for that matter. Starring Barry Crocker and the immortal Dame Edna. It's hilarious, and to me just improves with age. You view this one for a good larf, not Oscar material.
