What were you listening to when you were about 13?

I remember at about 14/15 I started liking music in my parents collection. Artists like Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Armatrading, Dire straits, James Taylor etc etc.

I then started to look further afield and found Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, The Stones etc.

BUT, when I was 13 I used to listen to this.

So, what were you listening to when you knew jack shit about music?

Ernie. (And 'e drove the fastest milkcart in the West!)

And, being serious....... I have 2 older brothers and my music tastes were influenced heavily by them: Beatles, Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin......... and Neil Diamond!

I think the moral of this thread is, that as parents we have a very important duty to educate our kids as to what is and isn't decent music.

Imagine how I could have turned out if my parents didn't listen to music and I stuck with the rap.

    Probably similar to you.

Started off with bits out of my Mum and Dads vinyl. The Beatles, Mott the Hoople, The Who.

Then 1991 / 92 rolled around and I became aware of music that really interested me in a different way. I remember my mate did me a tape of LL Cool J, which snapped. I got my arl fella to fix it and he hit the roof when he had a listen to see what it was. Bits of other hip hop which I still look out for even today but I was mainly into bands, indie stuff.

^^ My sister was a head banger. She went from being a Bross-ette one year to being a head banger the next. Quite some jump. I think she may have stopped off at Goth on the way!

I liked Guns N Roses at that age but that was about it I think.

GnR were alright. I didn't mind a bit of Maiden either truth be told.

^Funny how it's music and fashion that always puts kids into different categories.

True. I wouldn't have hung around with any goths or head bangers at that age and they wouldn't have wanted to hang with us.

Goes to prove that music is one of the most import things in the history of man IMO.

I'd not have wanted to be considered a smelly, even though there's some good music in that genre.

You're right about music, it's much more than just sounds.

1967, a very good year. I was 13 in Dec. 1966. I first heard Are You experienced? in May 1967 shortly after its release. My family were on holiday in UK ( we had emigrated to Canada in 63). Sgt. Pepper's was released shortly after and the rest is music history. The Doors, Surrealistic Pillow, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Disraeli Gears and many more great records released that year. It was a great year to be young and in love with new rock music.
