Whats with all the mp4 downloads?

I was just looking forward to my Saturday morning in front of the TV and when I loaded my usb stick nothing worked on my telly.

I went back to my laptop to check it out and found that every show that downloaded this week was in mp4 format instead of .avi

Did a search on eztv to find that all my favorite shows are in mp4 and a further search on piratebay I found that everybody is complaining about it.

I think I've got software that can can convert it but it all seems like a pain in the arse.

Anybody got any idea why there has been a format change?

let me guess, download for your iPod or iMac ?

always check for AVI download, sometimes those USB players or TV players are quite dumb so renaming the file by changing the extension from mp4 to avi is just what you need, they have the codecs to open the file eventually

sometimes, the mp4 doesn't mean anything, it's just another AVI, and the USB Players will not have the necessary codecs to play the files. Most of the time, QuickTime formats are not "open" and therefore not available to third party for USB Players or those built-in TV players

so it means that your auto downloader are converting the files automatically into the mac format

see if there is an option to disable that,

No, there's no converting. A big majority of this weeks TV has been torrented as MP4's. There are a lot of comments on Pirate Bay about it.

the codecs are too recent, therefore not always implemented in cheap devices

also some could be FULL HD avi, and some TV will not play those

happened to me a few times,

    Nope.

Anyway problem solved and I found out the reason why.

Called a friend and he said that he read on EZTV the other day that they are switching to MP4 because of the smaller file sizes. He then reminded me that he had already bought me an optical cable to connect my ps3 to the surround sound. So I fished the cable out of the cupboard and I'm all set to use the ps3 now instead of my dvd player.

AVI or MKV is for tv or data dvd's. MP4 is the formats for PS3 and XBOX. but seeing as i encode my MKV to m2ts file [AVCHD] is rather still download MKV as apposed to mp4, even if it is smaller size.

Ive just had to check this myself. ive got the walking dead season 2 episode 11 which i download for a mate and sure enough, it loads from my USB onto my tv. but at 350mb the file is terrible. i'll rather stick to MKV which tends to be over 1 gig in size.

for ps3, i download an mkv file and use TsMuxerGUI which encodes to M2ts in a matter of seconds. This is what the PS3 reads. Open a AVCHD folder from your camera and its a m2Ts file.

Missed this at the time. It seems the Torrent "powers that be" have decided that MP4 is to be the new standard.

I've got no idea what that means!

Not sure if I mentioned this before but I've started using the Vuse media transfer again to send files from my mac to my ps3.

Vuse converts any file type really well, the mkv files take quite a while to convert but I just drag and drop them to the ps3 symbol as soon as I have them.

The wireless transfer has improved loads since it was first released.
