Wife and I made the trek up the coast about 40Km from the resort we are staying at to have a late Sushi lunch/dinner. Always top quality food.

The whole experience looks great, but why fuck with that farm raised shit salmon? The tuna looks splendid, you grew up fishing for real salmon, so why do you eat that crap?

Its all weez got round these parts Snubs. Its not bad but not like what we know and enjoy in the Pacific Northwest. The Tuna is always top quality.

Snubs, I may be a 'cheap bastard' but I know a little bit about the Norwegian farmed salmon. Not only are they a complete environmental disaster, and not only due to the pollution around the salmon farms, the transfer of lice to wild salmon and the interbreeding with wild salmon that destroys their natural breeding instincts, it has also been an environmental disaster in the Baltic Sea where sand eels were hoovered up to provide food for the salmon farms. I say 'were' because they are all gone now... with the obvious knock-on effects for sea birds, fish populations, etc.

Also, the farmed salmon meat has around 35% more fat (I think, or it may be a lot higher) than wild salmon meat.

But... farmed salmon has brought the food to the masses, and also is VERY big money in Norway and the salmon farm monopoly is pretty much untouchable.

The salmon farming industry is incredibly unpopular among the local fishing communities, because once a salmon farm is set up an exclusion zone for fishing of around 200m (I think) is set up, destroying historical local fishing community grounds. It is so unpopular that the (salmon farming industry) vessels testing water flow, O2, chemical composition etc for new salmon farms no longer turn on their AIS (broadcasted positioning info) because as soon as locals know that an area is being considered for a salmon farm, they come out and destroy all the monitoring equipment

But is is very big money and it's here to stay.

I can absolutely taste the difference between salmon here and wild Salmon we enjoy from the Pacific Ocean off the California, Oregon and Washington coast. No comparison which is why I do not eat it much here. It very bland and fatty.

But as Mendy noted, farming Salmon along with Oysters, crab etc is here to stay to feed the masses. I only eat seabass fish here typically when I have fish. Forget that pond raised Tilapia junk you see at every market and Makro. It's awful.

This is why you see me eating nice aged steaks, fresh pork and chicken dinners.

I'm currently sat in a beer garden on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border and have just paid 5 pounds 50 for a pint of Moretti and thought "Oh, that's cheap."

Regularly paying 6 to 7 pounds does that to you.

That's what we use for our fish n chips in the bar and mrs buys them fresh, fillets them and freezes.

Only we call it barramundi, cos it sounds more exotic and classy

Anyway, that's exactly what it is:

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is the Australian aboriginal name for Asian seabass; a term that means “large scaled fish.” Barramundi spawn in estuaries are able to live in both fresh and saltwater environments.
