    Sorry, I missed that Snubby...

Since we returned from Oz 15 years ago my wife has reverted to full Isaan. She now much prefers this Isaan fare to Western food and we tend to eat separately in the evenings... and in actual fact I don't think that is so unusual for for many mixed race partners.

I'll be honest, and hopefully without insulting Isaan food, I would rather eat what the dogs get than eat some of the stuff my wife munches on.

But to be fair, for my wife's food to be edible to me it would have to be so bland for her... neither of us would enjoy it. A lot of what she enjoys would just blow my head off.

I tend to cook for my daughter as she is much more 'Western' in her ways that 'Thai'. It's just the way things have worked out.

And as for when I go away... yeah, a lot more rice for my daughter and less veg I would say... but she still gets her fruit and I'm 'as happy' as I can be with that.

Overall, I would say the Western diet I give my daughter is a lot more healthy than the Thai diet she gets when I'm away, but that's a whole different topic altogether.

That is a fact, and KW is spot on. But I do have sympathy for you. But again, its not all Thai women, its the one you chose mate. I dont think anyone has a "perfect" cross cultural marriage.

I guess that is what I was getting at. She is Westernized. When you are going back at sea this fall maybe she would be happier staying with your mum?

Ya I get that. If I am out of line then let the mods chop it off. I was just curious not trying to tip off the thread

^ Impossible mate. My mum is 85 and in the UK. My daughter's mum is here in Thailand... and my daughter loves her mum.

We're established here in Korat for the time being... not ideal at times for me but one thing for sure... maybe I don't agree with some of my wife's parenting but she loves our daughter and will always do her best 'in her way' for her.

This is the age old problem with mixed race parents... sometimes I have to accept that my daughter loves sausage with rice...

She is Westernised, but she's still also Thai... Isaan...

And Edit: No problem... I'm sure this is an issue with many Western/Thai parents.

I want my daughter to be Westernised... but not completely forget 50% of her roots.

I used to know a Thai woman, who was as mad as a box of frogs, that barely ate a thing and went totally against the grain for most Thais in this regard. When I asked why she never scoffed much, she said she only ate "cock, whisky and ecstacy." Food barely registered for her and she would never touch the Isaan stuff.

Fuck me that was a fun 6 months. I lost a bit of tub as well.

Obviously i cannot speak for anyone elses kid, but mine is pretty happy on both sides of the family diet. He most often shares lunch with his mum, and often dinner with me. Tonight we split a pretty decent lamb curry and naan bread, none of which his mother would be interested in.

His mum had an early evening meal, a huge bowl of steamed and boiled veggies, plah rah and rice. Pass.

I don't want to go off topic, but do you think she could swap whisky for Ja Dong and forget about the Es?

If so... PM me her number mate.

    Yep.
For some it's easier [even logical] to shed a broad brush culturally, certainly when your experiences/exposure are limited.

No wonder so many of her friends are dying of cancer and suffering from internal problems. This "food" is eaten anytime in a 24 hour day, no rhyme or reason.

Kids need structured meal times to fit around their school life.
Breakfast before school, a healthy packed lunch and a proper meal after school at dinner time.
Thai women generally are pretty hopeless at this and most family oriented stuff so the father has to be both parents as the Thai women will mostly be hands off when it comes to parenting, preferring the company of other Thai women.

Most days before furlough my kids wouldn't get there dinner till nearly bed time because their mother was busy

Having said all that, she is still their mother and kids need both parents.

It's not easy raising a family with a Thai and does require a lot of compromise on the side of the farang otherwise WW3 ensues and the children are upset.
You spelled 'caving in' incorrectly, and obviously you're only talking about one Thai woman.

PM sent. I think you should warn Korat (and the wife) and tell the gardener to put his dancing wellies on.

My dinner tonight was a garden salad with blue marlin added to it with a homemade Italian dressing. Me eating that healthy is almost as shocking as not seeing peas with something Mendip ate.

My wife and I go through the same thing...usually she cooks something she wants at lunch time while I forage on my own, but we always share dinner eating something we both can agree on.

I love peas in fact most vegies but of late my missus has been preparing salads using her own dressing with different fruits added.

My favourite is garden salad with apple and kiwi fruit added along with her fried chicken and chips.

Diced strawberries work too, LT, if you can get them quite easily.

    Failing that, mango.

I forgot to mention she also adds strawberries Hal.

Also tonight baked savoury pumpkin slices.

    I'll suggest mango.

    Cheers.

That's a bit presumptuous of you think that I don't know any of the above? Or is it just the usual faulty logic you seem to exabit from time to time. .

Though some of the above might be correct, it still does not stop them from being funny looking, with an undesirable texture and taste to me. Also not the correct shape for my recipe.

They eat rice, not potatoes (unless they are chips ). Used to have a rice based dish for lunch at School, but most of the other kids have a sandwich, so they have that also.

, also, we I want our Boys to be Westernised... but not completely forget 50% of their Thai roots.

I speak English to them, Mum speaks 95% Thai, so they are bi-lingual.

    ---

Oh, Mum also suck the 'goodness' out of the Prawn/Shrimp heads and eats the tails.

If we have prawn cutlets, the kids sometimes eat the tails. I'll pass.

Excellent attitude toward connecting your kids to both sides of their culture. Something I failed to do with my daughter and the Greek side of her culture., and a little late, are trying to rectify now. It is one of my big regrets.
I think eating the tails is a good form of calcium. I eat them whole when they are small and fried.

There were no proper mushrooms this week and I love mushrooms.

If you head down to the Pattaya Makros you will probably get a choice of many different kinds of courgettes and egg plants 24 hours a day along with a myriad of lamb cuts and imported steaks.
After we went to the morning market on out way back we stopped at the second Macro (the smaller one) in Khon Kaen and I hit the mother load.
Unless they have more in the back , don't go there looking for Zucchini cause I bought all they had (not many).
    Thank you for the tip.

These are the best instant noodles in my opinion.

You can use the flavouring if you like it hot or just use the noodles and add your own.

As we sell Indian curries at the bar, we have a whole cupboard in the kitchen dedicated to the cause. Everything is labelled in jars and I just experiment with a pinch of this, pinch of that. Add some stock, fresh garlic, mushroom and chopped shallots and good to go. It's a good portion too.

They do pot noodle style cups too.
