I decided to fire up my skillet again tonight... the third time in nine months or so. I ant to get my money's worth.

Some proper steak this time... grain fed Aberdeen Angus.

    Looked OK...

But very under whelming. As HW says with lasagnes, from now on I'm going to leave steaks to the experts and just eat occasionally when I go out... there's many meals I prefer anyway. Should get a good scrap price for the skillet... it weighs a bladdy tonne.

In fact the highlight of the cooking experience was to discover that NZ has an obesity problem equally as bad as the UK.

While I was cooking tonight the daughter showed me an ingenious method for separating salt and pepper.

She sprinkled both on a plate and had me guessing for ages how to quickly separate the salt and pepper... it just shows that an old dog is never too young to learn new tricks.

She wins our swimming races, she beats me at chess and now she's showing me cookery tricks... I'm feeling kind of redundant.

Looks a bit insipid Mendip, i'd happily scoff that if you'd switched in some gammon.

That steak is anything but MS4+ Mendip, it has almost no marbling and could not possibly have been good eating! Google Marble Score 4 meat and look at the images to get an idea of what you've missed out on, you need those flecks of fat thru the meat for flavour and tenderness. Next problem is you've bought Thai beef, might have been OK after a long stew but it's not good enough to flash-fry in a skillet. Unlike Lasagna, cooking steak at home is easy but you've got to have good quality meat to start with! I've got no idea what you can or can't get locally where you live but do yourself a huge favour and buy a couple of steaks like these below online from somewhere like Paleo Robbie and have them delivered. Not cheap but they'll be excellent quality and once you've eaten one you'll never buy local boot-soles again!

Noticed that too. Gotta focus on the steak not the label. Mendy steak is really easy to cook. I prefer cooking them on a grill, but a pan will do. Get it as hot as possible and use 4 minutes per side as a baseline longer for a real thick cut. If you have trouble telling how done it is get a digital meat thermometer. That way after you flip the steak you can pull it at exactly the right temp. Something like this...

    Dinner-71dlg213kml-_ac_sl1500_-jpg

Then you can get a steak like this every time. A T-bone I cooked a couple of months back...

Nope. I just have not been shooting pics of my dinners lately. Just now tucking into a bowl of freshly made Jambalaya.

    Don't they all do that?

    Especially on our packed lunches?

    Thai Angus

Tbh. I've eaten some Thai steaks in cafes and they've been ok but they have always been pre sliced like in the photo on your package... and possibly marinated for a few months.

Yeah, yum nua is decent too.

I don't ever bother with Thai beef though in general. Kor moo yang all the way (grilled pork neck), which is absolutely fanbloodytastic. Leave 'em to what they're good at.

If I ever fancy a steak I go to that place at the bottom of Suriwong or one of the Italians off Sukhumvit.

I bet you've had a fair few Italians in the dark alleys off Sukhumvit, haven't you?

To be honest I thought these were imported steaks because they were in a special section in Makro and were 'Angus', not to mention grain fed and MS4 PLUS.

I'm gonna melt down my skillet for scrap and stick with the pies.

Don't do that mate, its a cooking utensil not a fucking magic wand!

Just get some good quality imported steaks and amaze yourself how easy they are to cook and how good they really are, have a look at sites like Passion Delivery and get a small delivery sorted. You manage to navigate thru every other hurdle you've shared with us (leisure footwear and cast-nets being rare exceptions obviously) so organising a few good steaks to be delivered shouldn't be a drama. Life's too short to not have good steaks in the fridge all year round!

HAHAHA. You need to look at the meat. That was not imported and you got scammed.

    They're not kidding Mendy.

Those steaks barely even look like beef.

I must admit, for me a good pie beats a steak.

I'll investigate this Paleo Robbie website, but to be honest the only reason I'm persevering is because I spent 30 quid on that damn skillet and it hasn't produced a decent meal yet. When my new toastie maker arrives I bet the results will be perfect, every time.

I still prefer a good pie though.

And whatever does my footwear have to do with anything?

I have the exact same skillet. Gives fantastic results, but not even that will save crap beef. As i said, try it on a decent steak one time and you will be completely converted.

^^Cannot green you but you're 1000% right. Mendip will cook his first decent steak in it, almost die at just how good it is, then declare himself the next Salt Bae
