^ Affirmative - occasionally vary when I'm in Bangkok. But, for the most part I'm traveling with and accompanied by Thai's - foreign food to them is cost prohibitive. I'd say Thai food is healthy; pork, chicken, fish, but, the spices and sauces defeat that. If I don't exercise I gain weight. The real problem is, I do enjoy eating. We all have our crosses to bear...

Yup - but there is enough variety to keep it balanced. I do miss the beef - but, as I get it infrequently enough, the poor quality beef available here is fine. Even in the Northeast US, when I compared steak available it fell far short of the best corn fed Indiana beef.

You make do with what you got. As per earlier posts I have to make do with micro-sized beef jerky packets.

Dunno how you do it.

I used to eat it most days for lunch when I was at work, but I just can't eat rice more than once a day or every day of the week.

At home I'd usually make my own stuff or eat out at the weekend.

Rice - @ 5 days a week. Really just a substitute for potatoes.

Rice is just the carrier. It's the meat; chicken, pork, fish, beef, and the very large variety of sauces, spices, curries. Along with the large variety of noodles available. I would hazard a guess that I rarely eat the same meal in a months time.

I am very fortunate that I do like just about everything I've been offered - I even like deep fried grasshoppers, well, until my father-in-law saying they may have been killed with insecticide. That put me off them.

There is a lot to be said for the out-of-sight/out-of-mind adage. If I don't think about it, I don't miss it. Of course, reading this thread flies in the face of that logic.

Yeah, but potatoes actually taste nice! I love Thai food and binge when I'm over there, but even then, after a while, I need something new. There's definitely truth in what you say; being ensconced in a Thai village with Thai people keeps thoughts of a fat juicy steak far from your mind.

When I lived in Bangkok 30+ years ago, you could drive into Nana Plaza and park there. In those days there used to be a fried grasshopper haeker who hung around the entrance. I remember him as a miserable sob. Some friends would buy the grasshoppers but not for me. I remember asking where he found all these grasshoppers.

About a decade later when I was in UK I remember friends telling me that there had been a shock discovery. Farmers were spraying the fields with DDT then collecting the dead grasshoppers and selling them. Others who were in Thailand then might remember the details. So your fil's concerns are based on history.

We were blessed with forks, even in my youth.
Certainly to be held only in the left hand and only the back side up. Mother was not happy when any of us "shovelled peas."
