In Middle East diners on job sites over the years, there'd often be some sort of stewed or braised mystery meat in the bain marie's and when the cooks/waiters were asked what it was they just say meat. Got me a few times, the smallest bite into that shit (or fucking kidney) and that was the end of eating anything till the next meal time.

offal is awful, simple as that..

My rule of thumb if it pumps or filters something I ain't eating.

^Or thinks. Brains on a plate is a show-stopper when it comes to things that don't belong on a plate.

My mum tells me about having sheep's brains on toast during the war, but I don't think I'll be attempting that.

How about tripe... doesn't think, pump or filter. I like it in a soup.

I have done menudo as a hangover cure in Mexican restaurants... Must admit, although not in years.

I used to really enjoy braised pig or lamb's liver with onions. Probably the most nutrient-dense organ meat (Vit A; iron, folic acid, zinc) available.

Unfortunately, also very high in purines that create Uric acid, triggering Gout in my case. Sadly a no-no these days.

I had calf brain once in Bulgaria, decades ago. Some local plonker thought he was tricking me into eating it but I knew what it was as soon as I saw it. So I just ate it as nonchalantly as possible and told him it was boring. Never again.
My grandfather, a true Cockney, always had a cow's tongue on Boxing Day. Not sliced or diced, just a big pink tongue on or hanging over the edges of a plate. My infant sensibilities were not up to that. I have never been able to face tongue (of cow, before anyone interjects.)

Slices of pressed cow's tongue were common for me when growing up in the UK, and pressed tongue and tomato sauce sandwiches remain a favourite of mine to this day.

The wife quite often brings a pig's tongue back from the market, which she boils up and then cuts into small slices.

Nice beer food... pieces of tongue with a chili sauce dip.

Things like cashews or cheese on crackers are also nice beer food, and drinking mates are highly unlikely to throw up at the site of them

Well folks, today we lucked out. The local fruit and veggie vendor had some prawns. Very nice sized prawns – not the ultra-jumbos but very nice sized. 8 for THB 100. Really a fantastic deal. So…

Dinner: Well spiced Prawns with a soup of pork and tofu.
Dessert: Malaga, Champoo, Apple, Mango

The first course was the same old stuff from my limited repertoire.

But what do ya do when you've got 25 mangoes in the fruit bowl and then find a ball of pastry in the freezer, left over from the last batch of steak and kidney?

Mango and apple pie of course!

A lack of planning with the letter size, but cooked to a perfect 'Bogon' golden brown!



I got the 'G', littlun got the 'O'. Perfect with a bit of vanilla ice cream.



Delicious!




... well, I thought it was delicious, and it bladdy well was. I had seconds!

I asked the daughter if she wanted seconds and she said, 'I don't want to eat any more in case anyone else wants some tomorrow'.

The little bugger!

Upsetting as this was, I'm glad she's learnt such diplomacy at such a tender age!

Love the pie Mendip, perhaps with the glut if you have room make a batch and freeze them or freeze the fruit sliced just short of ripe.

^^ Think the pie was for the gardener and you ran out of pastry for the extra 'O' to make Man Goo.

^^ We picked around 1000 I reckon today. Washed and now lying under towels and newspaper. No room in the freezer after our COVID stockpiling. What to do?

^ Note to self... never ever admit to getting caught having a rare bit of 'me' time. Never... whatever the circumstances.

Incidentally... my young daughter is watching her tablet alongside me. She just asked if this guy is making fire.

Another note to self... stop 'making fire' in my office, even if I'm sure everyone else is busy downstairs. It's just too risky.
