Decent Coffee

What do you define as decent coffee?

I used to be an an un-informed guy that LOVES Colombian coffee.

No matter how educated I get, I'll always like Colombian coffee.

Boncafe.....tis a decent Thai brand, Boncafe used to import & sell S. American coffee.

Now there are these Lao & Vietnamese beans.....They all taste the same to me.....It's all SEA beans.

Boncafe wants 570 THB per kilo for their low-end beans.
Vietnam coffee is the same as Boncafe at 400 per kilo.

Am trying a Chang Rai (supposedly 100% Aribica).....free sample....He suggests 1200 baht is his retail price per kilo.

I know I am happy to pay top dollar for good coffee.

Nescafe is the ultimate insult.

Even at 1200 THB per KG, it comes out to less than 10 baht per cup.

Enough about me.

What are your thoughts on coffee? This being a forum I doubt I'll get anything usefull, but why not try?

What is it that makes you love or hate the waiter/waitress that brings you a cup of coffee?

Not a big deal, but I tend to get inflammation of the brain when I order a coffee....it costs 40 THB or more, and it is Nescafe.

I can't stand Bon Cafe though. I just finished a 3 year contract with them and have switched to Lavazza, much better in my opinion.

Bon Cafe always has a layer of film over the top that I can't stand and it sticks in my mouth all morning.

I've got a few bags of that Brazilian stuff that's been eaten and then shat out by cats or monkeys in my cupboard but as I don't have the tools to brew it at home its just wasting away. Does it have a shelf life?

to the OP: I buy BonCafe since it has the best taste (for me) over the other crap off the shelves, although I recently bought a kg of Coffman roasted beans, on-line for less than 600 baht/kg...delivered, and it's not bad.

It depends upon how fussy you are about your grinds, there is a coffee shop inside Sala Deang BTS station that sells a range of hand burr turned coffee grinders for about 1000B

Sorry JayWalk, fortunalely I have never taken to that habit of drinking coffee and although I'll enjoy a cup a "cappuccino" every now and then, I am not fond at all of the flavor of prue coffee. Unless that is, a rich cup of expresso is offered after dinner and then I will indulge. I don't mind the caffeen buzz at all, strictly a flavor and aroma thing that I find offensive.

I've brought coffee from the States on multi occasions for a friend. Never an issue.

you say that Colombian coffee is your fav, then you say the above, which is equivalent to saying Brasilian, Equadorian, Colombian are all S American coffees so taste the same

even within a country, different areas produce different tastes; like wine, it depends on the geology (not so much on the beans which all tend to be Arabica in SEA)

Up in the north of Thailand, excellent coffees are produced; we used to swear by one producer but recently have found another which tastes even better

maybe that is because they roast and grind the beans every day in town

Coffee is all i drink and often OD on 5-7 cups a day as i've substituted it for tea.

I think Tops own Aribaca coffe has a pleasant taste for only 150bht. I'm just trying a Thai brand called "Lanna Cafe" Thai Highland Premium Coffee at 250bht claiming to be 100% Arabica and it's really nice in my opinion. I've tried many others at twice the price which i didn't really find any better. Suzuki coffee is ok but gives me indigestion for some reason.

Doitung whatever it's called i don't really like.

havent tried the family mart one yet as theres not one near my daily stroll up the soi, the stalls on the road that sell it dont have much coffee in

The finest cup of coffee I have ever had was none of this fancy , poncy , priced stuff,, but was a cup of instant Kenco original with 2 spoons of coffeemate + 2 sugars , purchased for 60p in a laybay on the A13 near Purfleet sorry but its true ! delicious

If you have a percolator and are able to grind your own beans, you will find no finer coffee than Kenyan. I used to frequent the Costa Rica Coffee Company in Cardiff, Wales which sold coffee from all over the world. Kenyan was the most exxpensive because it was the best. It had the added advantage of acting as an air freshener as its odour/fragrance was so strong that it made my car smell wonderful for weeks after I transported it home. The shop no longer exists as dickheads all over the world now regard themselves as experts because they are willing to pay silly prices at Starbucks. The dickheads have never known real coffee and are to be pitied.

If you want to pay an exorbitant amount of money for disgusting coffee, you need venture no further that Big C, Pattaya, top floor.

Have been trying one importer and also just got a sample from Chiang Rai.

I know decent coffee when I taste it or smell it.

Have to say that I've been educating myself quite a bit on how/what/where the beans come from.

They are actually cherry sized fruits & the seeds are what makes the beans.

I'm no super-duper coffee freak, but I do enjoy a cup or two of some decent Joe in the mornings......decent is what I have struggled to find in East Asia.

Anyhow, I just scored a 1/4 kg of 100% Arabica from Chiang Rai today via EMS.

I really think (not sure) the art of good coffee has a lot to do with the roasting process.

I recall reading an article about how the Indonesians were upset with Starbucks because they used Indonesian beans, yet shipped them to Seattle for roasting and then sold it at local Indonesians shops at an astounding mark-up.

Anybody have any experience on the roasting process?

Probably is deadly if you are a Golden Retriever.....Chocolate is a poison that humans digest easily....It is deadly to dogs so never give your mutts any chocolate.

Humans should pretend they are not human also by avoiding all sugar, coffee, and chocolate, and sex, and, well,,,,,,,just eat grass and drink water.

That way you will be risk-free just like a silver-back gorilla.......They only eat grass and drink water. ZERO risk if you take this route.
