How did I survive : Childhood food Jelly Fish Fingers and lashings of Lemonade?

Some period films reminded me of how food has evolved,

Post War food in UK and Ireland was basically stodge and largely bland and brown.

I had a ration book a hangover from WW2 , in an era where 1 banana was a treat!

As a kid sugar was everywhere, fresh fruit free in the fields in the autumn apples and berries, rest of year cans of Oz peaches , pears, mandarin oranges and very tangy plums.

Hardlly a kiwi, mango , dragon fruit or qumquat around, jelly evaporated milk and choc if lucky.

Nesqwik , Angel delight were sugar flour mixed in milk, also some horrid butterscotch and Ovaltine stuff common.

A few more items from memory lane

I was lucky enough to grow up, immediately post rationing in the 1950s. Butterscotch Angel Delight made with fresh milk was a big treat for me.

We still had powdered eggs, powdered formula milk and Camp Coffee. I still got a bolocking for using the hot tap water for washing and peeling spuds.
