    Smoothie New Year

I was going to buy myself a single blender, but my dear mother bought me one for Christmas. I finally cleaned it and bought some stuff to start making yummy smoothies. For the first smoothie I wanted to make it a protein smoothie using my Vega pea protein chocolate protein powder.

Added a scoop of protein, a cup of oat milk, a cup of water, 2 tablespoons of my no sugar powdered peanut butter, half a banana (frozen), handful of spinach (frozen), a few ice cubes and blend. Tasted pretty good. I'm thinking of buying another protein powder at some point even though this one is good, it has a bit of a chalky taste.

Add your own recipes if you make smoothies. I'll be trying different ones over the weeks. I want to make a good green smoothie for health soon.

    A few pics

The blender came with this cup, which is great to hold and drink from. Pretty good, next time I may add some yogurt.
I dropped some milk on my new blender already. So clumsy at times. lol

^ You won't taste spinach in a smoothie, especially if you're the considerate type who adds pineapple to sweeten your load

    Arrow

Do you find a bit of roughage between smoothes mixes it up, and what size jugs do you recommend please, you seem to have a very large mug , are you able to swallow a whole one?, or do you nosh a bit for play time and the rest after lessons?

Instead of unnatural factory made powders have you tried fresh protein as the way not whey to go, Wai knot??
I realize caviar or lobster mousse maybe expensive but tuna+mayo. Pilchard and pomelo, sardine and washabi or a dailysquirt of something similarly fishy may reach places the vega spurts cannot.

    ^Okay then, David.. cheers.

Yes, Reg is correct Edmond, you don't taste the spinach at all. It is put in their to get some greens. I've already been researching the next smoothie I am going to make. I just have to go buy a few ingredients today. I also was given some ideas that came with the blender, but just because I'm a fun person I'm going to just experiment, and also find stuff on the interwebs that interest me.

Spinach goes into many of my smoothies also. Makes for an ugly smoothie when combined with fruit. Spinach and strawberries are the worst for an awful looking drink.

Good Luck with your smoothies. Can't stand the things quite frankly. Its like yogurt. The texture and smell is awful.

^ Have one of these smoothies.

Yes, I'd imagine blueberries also. I learned that earlier when I just wanted to make a pineapple/banana, coconut smoothie. It ended up turning green (probably spinach), and I had to do it over about three times as it was way too thick. I am learning that if I use frozen fruit I don't need a ton of ice as it makes it too thick. I also didn't get an after pick of my smoothie. I was getting flustered with trying to lighten the thickness out. I didn't want to eat it with a spoon.

I also added a tablespoon of pb powder as there is some good protein in it, as well as in the yogurt. I didn't use my protein powder in this one. IT turned out a green color. Wasn't as sweet as I'd like and I didn't really taste a strong coconut/pineapple taste I was hoping for. Live and learn. 7/10.

First smoothie I made would give it a 7.5 on 10. Hoping to make one I really like soon.

I'll be trying these in the coming days..wish me luck. lol.

I won't be using those measurements as they seem to be for a big blender. I can't put much in the small cup I have, another live and learn moment.

Frozen fruit is the way to go. Thickens the smoothie and you never have to worry about not using it before it goes bad.

Having a little stevia added to a blah smoothie helps.

^Yes, girl, we are on the same page. I did that with this last smoothie. I had to get the mixed fruit bag as they were out of single bags of pineapple and mango. There is a fine line between too sweet and not sweet enough. I also am trying not to use too many sweet fruits, trying to stay lowish carb /low sugar.

^How would you rate your blender/ juicer? I have 2 friends who have the Nutri bullet and they swear by it. For smoothies (which I seldom make), I use the ordinary pitcher-like big blender. I used to have a cylindrical blender (which can hold 500 or 600 ml) but I lent it to my mom & she's lost/ misplaced it.

When I was in my smoothie/ weight loss phase, I used to include "pechay" (a relative of bokchoy; it has thinner, white stems instead of green stems & is readily available here in PH). I also included a banana, half an apple, some oats, milk & 1 tbsp sugar. The smoothie would be green in color due to the pechay but I didn't mind.

^My blender went kaput about a year ago and has not been replaced. I’ve been making smoothies in a food processor. It works even better than the blender with the exception of not having a pour spout on the tank.

Coconut milk has a shed load of calories via saturated fat.

They always seem to sneak into your 'diet' meals somehow.

If you must consume it then look for a 'light' version.

^Yes, I agree abt the coconut milk.

I've had "high-blood experiences" with coconut milk. One time, I ate veggie dishes cooked w/ coco milk for 3 or 4 days for lunch. I bought those dishes from my regular stall prior to work (different veggies but c-milk based). Later during that week, I felt dizzy & had this ache at the back of my neck - those are my "high blood" signs. I went to the office clinic. The nurse checked my BP. Sure enough, my BP was above my normal levels. She asked me what I've eaten & done the past days. When I said coconut milk-based dishes, she said that was the culprits. After that, I steered clear of c-milk based dishes.

Fortunately, my body gives me warning signs to tell me if something isn't good for me (too much fatty foods) or if I must increase my exercise (sometimes I'm lazy to exercise). At the moment, I'm not taking maintenance meds - trying to stay healthy through diet & exercise.

So yeah - go easy on the coconut milk!

This blender is surprisingly good. It is 900 Watts which is very good power for a small blender. I was going to buy a Ninja which is like top of the line, but mom made a good choice. I am not used to the small single blender, but it'll take time.

Hope you can buy another blender soon. I heard the Vitamix blender/food processor is one of the best out there, but super expensive as well.

Maybe you and Cy are thinking of sweetened coconut milk, This is unsweetened. It is low in calories and carbs and sugar. It has 4 grams of saturated fat per cup, which isn't a lot. Think butter has 7 grams per Tbsp. I just bought this mostly to do a coconut /pineapple shake. I normally use Soy Milk and at times Oat Milk which is a bit higher in carbs, yet creamy. They are all plant based milk which I highly enjoy. I haven't drank cow's milk in ages. Too bad you had such high BP with coconut milk. Condensed milk is also very high in sugar.

Good to know that the coconut milk is plant based, anyway.

@MM - PH-based canteens/ eateries use coconut milk which is freshly extracted from the coconut meat/ pulp. They (we) don't use box-type coconut milk. The eatery owners buy the coconut pulp from wet markets during mornings. (I don't know how it is in TH or Indonesia.)

There's coconut milk powder sold in plastic sachets in supermarkets here - the powder has to be mixed w/ water; I think it's made by Unilever. However, I don't know any canteen owner/ cook who uses those things, as they prefer the old style, fresh from the fruit. As such, c-milk dishes here are very high in saturated fats since they didn't get processed.

Nowadays, I don't eat much of c-milk based dishes. If I do, I just buy 1 serving from a store/ eatery. I don't cook with it. I eat it mostly for nostalgia bcos my dad loved to cook with it. He grew up in a coconut farm & it was abundant during his childhood.

    ++++

Not keen on smoothies. I'd much rather just eat fresh fruit and veg. Also not keen on a lot of these milk substitutes, oat milk etc. not as healrhy as it appears, esp for diabetics.
