That said, I cannot 100% defend US cuisine. As a kid growing up, we ate exceptionally fresh food basically straight out of the garden and from live stock raised. My Gma and Mom used to make all their pasta noodles for the various dishes she would cook. Fast forward, the US has sadly become a paved over Starbucks, McD's , BK, Carls Jr., Jack in the Box, Taco Bell and KFC crap food on virtually every corner. People became workaholics and convenience took over. Now all that processed crap many eat every day has made them lazy fat fkrs. I see it every time I return. BUT they make their choice. There is outstanding cuisine to be had at anytime albeit to enjoy good food, you will most likely pay dearly for it if you dine out. At home you can make outstanding meals like my wife does here. The options are quite frankly endless in the states. I cannot fairly speak to UK cuisine other than what a few colleagues who go there a lot have said and the offerings posted up by Joe, Dil and Mendy. Its a small sample size but if that's it, then you UK folks eat shit. . It seems like canned or frozen food are huge along with instant mash taters ( Probably from a box) and again from pics and comments you guys torch your meat and then add various gravies to mask it. That "Proper English's Bfast" you guys go on about is nothing but garbage food. Denny's in the US sells that shit for $3.99 and only desperate people order it and even Denny's doesn't sell sloppy sugar filled mush beans. And that is saying a lot.

But Like either of our countries, good cuisine can be had. The US just has waaaaay more options and usually cooked far better.

Do not leave Armstrong off that list. He posts up some right disgusting shit as well. Armstrong, Dilly, Chits and Mendy are the reality of English cuisine...

Many years ago a British girl worked in my office one summer. We quickly got into the habit of going out to eat lunch together, usually over in Oakland, which is a 5 minute drive from Alameda. First we ate at a good local Taquaria, then Chinese, then Vietnamese, then back to Chinatown for some Dim Sum... Finally she asked me if we were ever going to eat American Food! So I took her to an old-fashioned diner that was owned by a couple of Greek brothers!

Their breakfasts are excellent value for money. Eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. You can't go wrong with that, can you?

The bacon is precooked and reheated in the restaurant, they use powdered or bagged eggs for most dishes.

Are you expecting fresh salmon for that price?

Stock up on Denny's at brekky and save the splurge for the evening when you have to again factor in the absurd tipping culture that make eating out in the US so expensive.

The great joy of visiting the US is eating out (of course this is a troll thread ) and, like the UK, sampling different cuisines that are on almost every corner of any major city.

And Texas BBQ. And maybe some Cajun cooking as well.

Perhaps some baked beans if you're out with snubby in Seattle.

Why not just get a cheap breakie burrito from a Mexican spot or a salmon and lox bagel from a deli? Even cheaper than Dennys and real ingredients.

There are 5 good mom and pop restaurants and diners serving up much better breakfast fare than Denny's at less cost spread out all across America. Surprised you did not find them. On rural roads looks for places that have lots of semi trucks with trailers parked. Route 66 that you have been on has some of the best. My wife has become an expert on finding them as she does not like the "institutional" food at Denny's. You can often find a good burger there as well.

We often miss breakfast cos we tend to eat late. Denny's is a ritual when we are there though cos I used to go there as a kid and loved the breakfasts (although we didn't bother last time in NY cos there was just so much choice around us). Pancakes for breakfast! I couldn't believe my eyes as a little nipper!

Yeah, did this in NY quite often.

I almost never eat breakfast as I am a late riser. If I do, it is for dinner, which actually is pretty tasty for din-din.

I think you meant to say that there are 5 good mom-and-pop places for every dennys and you would be right. He really is missing a very key part of grassroots America by going to Denny's instead.

I'm sure you have a guilty pleasure that you have a soft spot for. Denny's breakfasts are that for me.

Remember, you only have to tip if you want to. I do not buy in to the US BS that tips are mandatory. If the service is crap, I don't tip. If the service is basic but OK, maybe 5%. Only in a very high end restaurant where service is exceptional do I tip. In my opinion, they are there to provide a service. I just don't tip because they show up and expect it.

Funny that Hal finds Dennys a value. Explains a lot and why they think their Proper English Breakfast is so good. Denny's versus UK top cuisine. There is no winner. They are both shit.

Yikes. So you tip the very top of the service industry and stiff the poorest. You cheap bastard.

I will remind myself that if you are paying the bill, I will have to take a look at the check to see if you have been a cheap bastard, so I can pony up for a proper tip.

    Just a note...

Did you stiff the catering staff that did your kid's wedding?

I tip when the service is as expected, not because some person hands me a receipt showing what it will be at 10%, 15% and 20%. F that. Years ago when working part time as a waiter going to college, the owner told me, don't expect tips, earn them. Stuck with me forever. Honestly snubs, I do not care if those waiters are making a lower wage, you want a tip, earn it. Don't just bring the food to my table and disappear like most do until check time expecting 15% on a $100 dollar dinner. True waiter/waitress service was lost long ago in the US. They all feel entitled which drives me nuts.

Tipping exists because in the US the owners stiff the staff and don't pay a proper wage. Put the cost on the items and pay a proper wage. But they won't so fuk em

    Exactly.

We were ordering some beers while looking at a menu in Miami and before we'd even ordered the food, the barman gave us a friendly reminder that "tipping is expected in the US" and it will likely result in your food being spat in if we didn't start tipping him now!

One beer and we were Gough and we were off.

^^ The bagels and caramel balls look good but shouldn't they be doubled coated with cheese and fried to be proper seppo food?
