UK in ‘rapidly escalating’ diabetes crisis as cases top 5m, report says

Blame it on us. It couldn't be all the processed shit food that so many Brits on here eat. I have never seen worse than I have seen here with you lot. Literally everything seems to be processed and come out of a can.

The UK is experiencing a “rapidly escalating” diabetes crisis, with cases topping five million for the first time and under-40s increasingly affected, a report has revealed.

About 90% of diabetes patients have type 2, a condition much more likely to develop if people are overweight. About two-thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or obese.

A report published by Diabetes UK on Thursday reveals an all-time high for type 2 and type 1 combined of 4.3m officially diagnosed cases and another 850,000 people living with one or other of the conditions but still to be diagnosed. Another 2.4 million people are at high risk of developing the type 2 form in the UK.

“These latest figures show we’re in the grip of a rapidly escalating diabetes crisis, with spiralling numbers of people now living with type 2 diabetes and millions at high risk of developing the condition,” said Chris Askew, the chief executive of Diabetes UK.

The stark figures mean millions of Britons are at increased risk of complications including heart attacks, kidney failure, stroke, amputation and blindness.

As a result, the UK faces a public health emergency unless action is taken, Askew said. “Diabetes is serious, and every diagnosis is life-changing. It’s a relentless condition, and the fear of serious complications is a lifelong reality for millions of people across the UK.

“But it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right care and support, cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or put into remission. What we need to see is the will, grit and determination from government and local health leaders to halt this crisis in its tracks and improve the future health of our nation for generations to come.”

The report specifically raises concern over the high number of people who are overweight or obese across the UK, and says this is directly “translating” into an increase in cases of type 2 diabetes. The risk of type 2 diabetes is seven times higher in obese people than in those of healthy weight, and three times higher for those who are overweight.

The report also expresses concern about thegrowing number of younger people developing type 2. “Alarmingly, the condition is becoming increasingly common among those under the age of 40,” it says. “While numbers of under-40s with type 2 diabetes remain a small proportion of total cases, it is known to have more severe and acute effects on younger people.”

The number of people under 40 in the UK being diagnosed with type 2 is now rising at a faster pace than among the over-40s. The latter still make up the vast majority of cases, but the number of under 40s with the condition has shot up the 150,000, representing a faster growth rate.

Demand for care for children with type 2 at paediatric diabetes units across England and Wales has also increased by more than 50% in the last five years.

Diabetes UK also said the condition was becoming more prevalent in areas where there were higher levels of deprivation.

That's a bit of a selective list won't you agree?
America or for that matter anyone else , sells what people will buy, all other don't do well and go out of business. .
Plenty of good food in America , if you all like to eat crap is not our fault, but we will sell it to you.

So, on a crisp sandwich, mayo or butter, one side or both sides? I'm going to give it a try today.

And for dessert, a sugar sandwich, with full fat butter and sliced white bread, of course.

Possibly explains why our teeth may well be less than perfect, but you can’t have everything. My mother would alternate this treat with a banana filling, for variety.

    Mayo??!! Are you insane?

Butter, full fat and salted , sliced white processed bread ( no artisan bollox ) and if you can manage it try and get salt and vinegar crisps ….Kettles are the best.

I rarely eat either of those things. I was rightly pointing out the shit diets that a lot of Brits here have and clearly illustrate with the photos they post. Clearly I hit a nerve.

I’ve taken a liking to the Pandesal bread roll. Made by a local bakery, with the bakers wife’s recipe. Yes the bakers wife is a charming Pillipines lass.

being drunk does help with Anglo food which is generally regarded as filler to allow the toper to embibe more burgers fries and similar pre chewed food norally fed to children in developed gastromomic societies.

I have had some great and not expensive food in USA but nearly all in ethnic restaurants.
I will admit Maine Lobster and New England Clam chowder both very tasty while I love TexMex and Cajun food I had in Louisiana.

In UK fish is hard to spoil unless you really try Hake Haddock and increasingly hard to find Cod or Plaice in take always (not sure if it is price or fished out),John Dory Megrim sole and the Abroath smokies are a nice breakfast .

While utterly unhealthy as a regular diet I used to like the lost lamented premer pies of Saxby's Melton Mowbray

The same family now make Cider, pig out in Pigsty with scrumpy and Ram O'Dan fades from the mammary.

You were making an assertion about the incidence of diabetics and obesity in the UK.
I simply pointed out that the USA is awash with fast food and processed food which originates there. You do have an alarming number of fatties. (Not worthy of research as proof is quite visible).
My nerves are fine thanks. Sorry to burst Cyrille’s bubble, but I am neither obese, nor am I diabetic.

It was posted in response to Taxis post. Maybe you should follow the thread more closely.

Prevalent in most parts of the world now, unfortunately. Not many major cities in the world where you can't find a big mac or a whopper. Diet and obesity in America is very much class based, and concentrated in the southern and Midwestern states.

As you know my culinary skills are basic to say the least and i struggle to cook.or buy a dish that the bloody shark biscuits will eat. They hate veggies, love spuds but theres only so much you can do to a spud so Costco pleasantly surprised me with these Mac N cheese croquettes, the kids couldnt get enough neither could i they were fucking great, thank you costco. God Bless You BLD and Costco!

Loaded baked potatoes are always nice....bake large taters, then squish up the insides and add butter, cheese, bacon and whatever you like...I like taco meat and cheese or chili and cheese on mine. Really, anything with cheese and or bacon is good.

There pizza is great, at the food court, i usually dont linger long in there as its to easy to go apeshit on the groceries , can buy a cooked chicken for $7.00 which is good value, cooked pork knuckle with sourkraut for $22 muffins for the kids, fruit juice boxes for kids lunches all economical , This trip mrs bld tricked me, said she wanted to buy me a birthday cake, which she did. But we both got carried away with the shopping, them damn gigantic shopping trolleys, gotta pace yourself in costco, and eat before ya go, dont go shopping hungry

Yep, that pandesal is great stuff to start the day, fresh out of the oven used to butter it, a bit of vegemite and good to go , my filipino work mates were horrified

I put on over a stone eating them as a starter in LA, that was nearly 30 years ago and it took an age to lose the weight again.

These food warehouses, both in the usa and the uk, are nearly always full of repulsive, obese slobs and their brats, shuffling around like automatons piling up their trolleys with the most appalling and unhealthy slop that masquerades as food.

Companies such as costco are growing rich on the stupidity and laziness of people unwilling to prepare nutritious meals for themselves and their hyperactive brats.
