A certain type of herbal soup could cause liver damage, a study has found.

    Key points:
    • A woman in Victoria suffered liver damage after eating bak kut teh soup
    • Researchers added four different soup formulations to cultures of liver cancer cells
    • All of them caused 'significant toxicity' to the cells

The University of Adelaide and University of Melbourne scientists who did the study said what people ate before they died should be questioned when liver damage was discovered during an autopsy.

The soup studied is called bak kut teh and is popular in Malaysia and Singapore.

    Welcome back, David!

I eat bak kut teh all the time when in Malaysia.

As ever, I have some questions:

A woman in Victoria suffered liver damage after eating bak kut teh soup
Researchers added four different soup formulations to cultures of liver cancer cells
All of them caused 'significant toxicity' to the cells

What is the source (not ABC)? Could it have been anti-Chinese in origin (I suspect so)? Was it just one woman? What else had she been doing? What else caused "significant toxicity" to the cells and what does "significant toxicity" mean? Do we know about her previous health history?

Also, how are natural ingredients like star anise, garlic and cinnamon supposed to cause cancer?

    Even the responder answered:

"Obviously, a lot of people have this soup and don't have a problem. In fact, I love this soup.
