Almonds don’t lactate and why it's wrong to smash an avocado

Up your nose with a rubber hose, monkey-breath . . . if Sanitarium says they do then THEY DO!

Almond milk is a vegan environmental catastrophe.

    Oatmilk if you have to

Influenced by clean eating and agri-exposés such as Cowspiracy (whichpointed to methane emissions from cattle as crucial in global warming), many are ditching cows’ milk in favour of non-dairy alternatives, which, according to Euromonitor, now make-up 12% of global milk sales.

That sounds positive. Pre-shipping, the carbon created by a litre of semi-skimmed (1.67kg) is far higher than that of almond milk (360g). “But what people don’t know is the environmental damage almond plantations are doing in California, and the water cost. It takes a bonkers 1,611 US gallons (6,098 litres) to produce 1 litre of almond milk,” says the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s Pete Hemingway.

Over 80% of the world’s almonds are grown in California, which has been in severe drought for most of this decade. Hemingway describes a situation in which farmers are ripping up relatively biodiverse citrus groves to feed rocketing demand for almonds, creating a monoculture fed by increasingly deep water wells that threaten statewide subsidence issues. That leaves rather a bad taste in the mouth.

Yup, I agree with the article, the water consumption is madness . . . but our youngest is dairy intolerant, like many Asians, and needs a substitute. Every mass-crop has negative environmental factors . . . some more, some less.

We carbon-neutralise by growing trees in our yard . . . Hey, if governments can do it then so can individuals. NZ signed a deal with Indonesia to plant trees as a carbon-neutral plan. Ridiculous

    .
Was reading the other day that Avocados are apparently such an environmental nightmare, some chefs have not stopped using them.

Apparently they require unsustainable amounts of water also.

Without wanting to be a hypocrite, some of the stuff we've got used to will have to be re-examined. California is a disaster zone, their abstraction is already way beyond sustainable.

That is a comment made by someone that has no idea what they are talking about. California is in the midst of a drought that is directly linked to climate change. The disaster is global and not sustainable to correct your short sited comment. These "disasters" are happening all over the planet.

^ i am aware of that Snub but their farming practices using abstracted water on high water demand crops is what i am referring to, you think that is sustainable?

It was before the drought. Now maybe not. California is at the forefront when it comes to environmental sustainability. It also is full of some of the smartest people in the world. If there is anyplace on this planet that can and will find a solution, it is the world's fifth-largest economy.

BTW, the UK is seventh, just for reference.

I love California...I just wish I could afford to live there as a poor, online TEFLer....or even when I was earning 100K/year when I lived there.

I recall you saying that you grew up in poverty under your parents.

So you had this 100 thousand dollar a year job half a dozen decades ago which with inflation would be about a million dollars nowadays? but decided to make your fortune tefling in third world countries?

When you look back now, sitting there watching the wife sucking away on a chicken foetus... do you think... Hell yeah...This is better than Snubby's trailer park?

tell us about your situation then Dilly? How’d you go from a high flying expat in South East Asia to unemployed former bus driver in squalor in the UK? When your wife is sucking down fetid chicken feet do youboook at her and think yeah, this is the life?

You guys ar milking this article.
See what I did there? the term "Milk" can be used for things other than a white liquid substances secreted by female mammals.
As Panama Hat said "Yup, I agree with the article, the water consumption is madness . . . but our youngest is dairy intolerant, like many Asians, and needs a substitute. Every mass-crop has negative environmental factors . . . some more, some less. "
So is my wife and many otherAsians,
We buy Almond "Milk" regularly. I Make up for the water loss to the environment by getting up several times at night and peeing .
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
