    PAG's Promising Pasties

With the G7 currently being held in Cornwall, and of course half time snacks needed for the European Championship football, what better time to make my first Cornish pasties.

    Firstly, gather the ingredients.

Then set to making the pastry.

Made into a ball, wrapped in clingfilm, then into the fridge for an hour.

Time to dice up the vegetables and meat. Potato, onion, and Swede/Turnip. Disaster! What I thought was Swede or Turnip turned out to be Beetroot! Need to remember my glasses next time I go shopping. Carrots it is then. Standby for my next thread, "PAG's Homemade Pickled Beetroot". Coming soon. For the meat, I've used sirloin steak, trimmed of the fat and diced.

Next, rolling out the pastry and using a small plate as a template to cut out circles.

Some egg wash around the edges to help the seal, then half packed with the meat and veg mix.

Folded and sealed, brushed with more egg wash, and a couple slits in the top for ventillation. Ready for the oven.

45 minutes in the oven, and the finished articles.

Not the prettiest you'll see, but they'll do the job.

    ^ They certainly will.

I'll be along before kick-off. Don't worry, I'll bring along some Isaan snacks.

Very "noice", PAG. I'd eat that.

( It looks like a baked empanada, which for me is a good thing. Cheers.)

Same principle Katie, just different filling.

You mentioning empanads, reminded me of when I was working in Southern Texas. A lady used to come to the site every day in mid morning with freshly made tamales, which I used to love.

When I was in uni, a nearby stall sold empanadas for 10 pesos. Now they're sold at ~20 or 25 pesos (1 usd ~ 48 pesos). I haven't eaten empanada in a long time. Might go somewhere to find one. Cheers!

They look great and I don't even think I like Swede or parsnip... but that weird tasting veg that solely identifies a cornish pasty will be missing.

    Are you still vaping?

    Where's the msg and lard?

Should gone Levi Roots with some curry powder on those meat and potato pies
    Apart from that... superb

Yup, still vaping. I could have gone with lard in the pastry, though butter gives it a more richer taste. With pastry, once you've got an end product you enjoy, there's no end to filling options and shapes. During my Manchester youth, meat and potato pies were always the order of the day.
