Yeah, the point is that in the UK at least a 'soup spoon' as such is really not widely used these days.

Not since about the same time as the dowager checked out of Downton Abbey.

I cannot remember ever having bought soup spoons. I used to possess a couple of Cathay Pacific soup spoons, they were seldom used and one eventually became a scoop to remove poo from the cage of my son's pet Leopard Gecko. In Thailand I use the Chinese-shaped spoons, which I reckon are ergonomically superior to the traditional Western soup spoon.

Why? Can't imagine doing that, it'd be ridiculous taking tiny little spoon fulls when there's proper sized spoons in the house.

Maybe Australians use the words 'dessert spoon' and 'soup spoon' interchangeably?

It's only a generation ago that you were using your fingers, after all.

I think most people eat their soup with the common tablespoon.

I also have never seen it being used in a recipe. I can't help but wonder if it is a "Chinese whispers" bastardization of "soupçon".

If the day ever comes when I take my belongings out of UK storage then I'll have a look for the other spoon, there used to be two and I am sure the ex would have left the old cutlery for me. There were two knives and forks too. First Class stuff. A friend's wife was a Cathay chief purser....

I think most people these days eat their soup with a dessert spoon. A table spoon is way too big.

In the UK it is not. In the UK a teaspoon is a small spoon, the size you use to put sugar and instant coffee in a cup.

^ I agree with that HW, apart from I would call your table spoon a dessert spoon and your dessert spoon a long-handled tea spoon. I always thought the table spoon (which you don't seem to have) is the biggest of the lot, apart from the serving spoon of course.
