^^ That would make a great post.

One of your scantily clad 'visitors' could blindfold you and test your tastebuds on different offerings.

^ Ha... I guess a breakfast post with a cup of tea is in order next week! Nice to see how observant some people are!

    ^That might have legs Mendip...

I could try and stage a kind of budget version of 9 1/2 Weeks using supermarket tinned baked bean varieties instead of tiramisu and cream and all the other luxury delicatessen delicacies Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger were feeding each other...!

How odd. The standard Heinz Beanz tin is 415g. (I just checked one of mine in the cupboard)

Whatever you do, Chits, never ever try Tesco Value baked beans.

They were about 10p a tin when I was at university, and I fully understood why.

We had to add tomato ketchup to give the fuckers some flavour.

Don't worry about the bacon causing overcrowding, you cook the bacon first then cook everything else in the fat.

    No cooking oil required.

Why hell are you using an ice-lolly stick to stir your tea?

^Got to say the typical baked beans as a side at BBQ joints in America are sensational. Cooked in-house, not canned, and simply delicious. Totally different type of baked bean though, American style is all about the smokey flavour vs English style that are more about the tomatoe sauce.

The specific heat capacity of stainless steel is about 0.49 Kj/Kg.C

The mass of a typical stainless steel teaspoon is about 40 grams (0.04Kg)

The energy required to heat a teaspoon from 20C to 100C is therefore

    0.49*0.04*(100-20) = 1.568kJ

The specific heat capacity of a PG Tips brew is about 4.2kJ/Kg.C

The mass of a PG Tips brew is about 350g (0.35Kg)

So extracting the 1.568kJ from the tea to heat the spoon cools the tea down by 1.568*0.350/4.2 = 0.13c

This is a much lower number than I had expected before I started doing this calculation 5 minutes ago. I was anticipating at least 1c as the result

Despite a very rusty old degree in Chemical Engineering I have lived my entire life labouring under the curious misapprehension that a steel teaspoon (due to steel's comparatively high specific mass) would also have a correspondingly high heat capacity (and would therefore significantly cool a mug of tea when used to stir it) - but having researched this calculation I am now disabused of this misperception and will no longer be using wooden lollipop sticks to stir my tea.

Thank you Bogey. My life will be simpler from this day forward.

^ You don't like a cold cup of tea either bsnub?

Looper, why don't you just pre-heat your spoon?

I have a cup of coffee in one of those vacuum travel cups for the morning school run and if I remember to pre-heat it the coffee stays hot for the entire journey.

No need Mendip as the specific heat capacity of steel is almost 10x less than that of PG Tips (or more generally water).

    Whodathunkit

I am sure I must have been well aware of this when I was an undergraduate but I have no memory whatsoever of this surprising factoid

It makes me ponder the mysteries of memory and wonder what it will be like when my memories start slowly unravelling as I get older

The other thing I am wondering about is what am I going to do with all these lollipop sticks.

I could maybe build some kind of model out of them with glue but what kind of model...

A bit 'out there' with a lollipop suggestion.

I thought this was the 'Nice cup of tea' thread, but I've just realised it's the baked bean thread. Surely a frozen baked bean ice lolly should be first up?

^ by "we" he means Native Americans, which the recipe originated from. He'll claim he's part Indian next on top of being Viking and German. Of course the early Brits adopted the recipe and therefore in effect we've given it to ourselves.

I'll get my usual red for this his favourite British word incorporated.
