I don't usually have breakfast at the end of my night shift and didn't even want this... but such is my commitment to this thread.

I reckon these are the most northerly baked beans served up on this thread... off the top of Norway.

The Filipinos make the breakfast and always include a kind of heated up corned beef mush with onions dish... not sure if it's boiled, stewed or just microwaved but it's just as bad as it looks!

There have been a couple of negative comments on other threads about Ayam beans. Maybe my palate is not sufficiently tuned to distinguish them, I am happy with both Brooks and Ayams. In fact the Ayam bean has an advantage because it comes in a small can option. When making a mega-breakfast I don't need a large can of beans alongside the sausages, mushrooms, hash browns, bacon and eggs. That is when the Ayam small tin comes into its own.

So I have Brooks large tins and Ayam small tins in the cupboard. I haven't found Heinz locally, they were what I grew up with and I still remember the first (and last) time that my mother fed us Crosse & Blackwell cans. Neither I nor my siblings liked their taste and to this day you'll only see Heinz in their kitchens.

Is Branston the old Crosse & Blackwell rebranded? I know that one or both of these brands was sold some time back. Did one or other of them go to a Japanese corporation?

I recently found a third brand of beans at Makro. This one is "fiamma" from Italy. I haven't tried them yet.

That's interesting... when I get home I'll check out those fiamma beans at Makro as Brook have been hard to find lately... maybe due to reduced flights during Covid? I didn't even realise the Italians ate baked beans.

A little tip on the bean wastage front... in her old age my mum has become very frugal and after opening a big can of beans she'll freeze what's not used in margarine pots. They go pretty shite after freezing though.

I used to see heinz beans in BK, but not for a while - loved those little microwavable pots. I have adapted across to Ayam - not as fond, but beggars and all that. One thing I did find was that I did not really like the amount of sauce - so I cook on a stove top and reduce down until the sauce is much thicker. That helps. Oh, and I get the low salt low sugar ones.

Not whale either HW... although these Norwegian boats do serve it sometimes. It can cause some controversy so it's rarely served when the crew is of very mixed nationalities.

I think tomcat has it... I would say it was somewhere between SPAM and those revolting reconstituted 'gammon' steaks you can get at Makro. Deep fried and then left in the congealing fat to cool.

I betcha can't get that at your fancy Pala... TC?

But just think... I took it preference to the bacon! The bacon on this boat really has to be seen to be believed. Maybe after my shift a breakfast is in order today and I'll try and take a sneaky pic.

But sorry Chitty... to get your thread back on track...

It's looking like I may end up doing an 8 week trip if my head holds together... so I wanted to check out provisions. It looks OK!

And never let it be said I'm not an adventurous eater... once the Heinz is finished I'll be trying some Tomat Bønner!

Haricots blancs a la sauce tomate sur pain grille avec un peu de fromage et sauce marron. The wine choice is a glass of Vimto.

    Merci beaucoup.

Beans on toast with cheddar cheese and brown sauce does sound much better in French.

If one of your parents came from Texas you did not grow up eating baked beans. You grew up eating pinto beans, in my case with ham hocks. Soaked my beans last night and hope to have something like this done by 5pm this afternoon. I will post up a done picture later. This one is generic from the net.

^ That looks very similar to the black bean stew we used to get in Brazil... feijoada. That has smoked pork or ham in. I used to love it.

^It does. All the food in Brazil was good actually, the only real exception being Farofa that was served with almost every meal!

Some beans on the side for brekkie this morning, ETA for the onset of loud rancid farts is 11:56

^ Must be 7 minutes to go...

I was lucky today... the beans were almost finished!

The food on this boat has been great... apart from breakfast. It is pretty awful.

And this is why I go for the rectangular pieces of deep fried SPAM / reconstituted ham. It's a crime what they do to the bacon.
