To be fair she did warn me before coming round that cullinary skills were not her forte but she was keen for a crack at making the famous Thai salad when I mentioned I had papaya trees.

I might google down a recipe and have a crack myself - as I am no slouch in the kitchen!

Obtaining the Pla Ra may be an issue.

^I thought Pla Ra was just fish sauce Toot?

I already had fit sot in the cupboard and it went into the Friday Som Tam and I got some more yesterday while on a hording mission to Coles.

Pla raa is also nicknamed 1000 year old sauce, and for good reason. Evil stuff

Fermented raw fish, a source of liver fluke and so to be avoided at all costs, stinks like fook too. The fish sauce in bottles is safe. You also won't get the small land crabs which they pummel in raw too, i also think they are a source of other unmentionable parasites.

I'm not painting a good picture here but you don't need the Isaan delicacies to make a good SomTam imo, looking forward to the outcome.

If you are from Isaan you would use the Pla Ra. If not most dont.

Banned here too unless I'm going to be away for at least another 1 month so the smell can dissipate. No getting away from it when it's on a taxi drivers breath though.

Jeff will be along shortly hinting that he loves it and anyone who doesn't is Westernized, he'll be typing that from America with nothing more pungent than Ketchup in his fridge though

You're only talking about your wife when you type things like this.

    You realise that, right?

Millions of Thais have been aware the dangers of plaa raa for a long, long time now.

A Thai from Isaan. Not a Thai. My wife has never eaten the stuff and my helper from Yasothon started believing and stopped 15 years ago or so.

^ ^But would your wife listen to you if she had eaten it as a child and you told her of the flukes and liver cancer odds? My missus doesn't listen or seem to care and generally speaking Chitty is right that most Thai would ignore a Farang's views.

The Thai are the most Xenophobic race there is and oppressed, indoctrinated and hard wired at an early age.
It's not hard to see that in the majority of the general public you meet.

Although obviously they are not all like that, even if it does make some posters bring out their wives worthless Thai batchelor degree

Chitty's sweeping generalisation makes a lot more sense than Cyrille's statement of Chitty only talking of his wife. It's the vast majority of the fuckin chicken heads.
