Early lunch today, going to nap for all afternoon methinks, having been foolish enough to watch the football. Anyway, a steak (not sure what kind) that I cooked in a skillet, letting it rest whilst I made a white wine and mushroom sauce. As a side, diced potato and carrot, pan fried in butter for a few minutes, then into an oven for about 20 minutes. Added peas and grated garlic as the end.

Quite possibly the worst food pics ever posted on TD, but lunch was bloody lovely! Saw these patties for the first time in Macro yesterday and thought why not give them a go. Had no bread rolls and couldn't be arsed going to get some so the patties were cooked and one halved then put into a wrap with grated cheddar, lettuce, onion, tomatoe, ketchup, and mustard. Will definitely be buying more of these patties, and putting a few packs in the freezer for Ron too.

I've gone from not having had Steak Diane for many years, to it becoming a weekly meal. Get to practice my flambe technique though.

^ Not on a family orientated forum, that's for sure.

My habit is to have a light Thai lunch, such as this prawn and squid basil... which as long as it's 'pet nitnoi' I really enjoy.

After seeing those burger patties you purchased from Makro HW, I had a look around yesterday when I visited.

    I found these...

I think that this may have been the first ever burger I've made... a bacon and cheese burger using vintage cheddar cheese. The photo doesn't do it justice... it was even better than McDonalds! I'll be doing this again.

    Nice burgers Mendip.

I opted for prawns for lunch also.

A good old fashioned Summer food, the prawn cocktail...

Today's lunch was the cheese, onion and potato pies I made yesterday, along with some potato and garlic puree, and garden peas. Made a cheese and onion sauce to go with it.

We go back and forth...one day it's salad at lunch, the other a cooked meal.

The wife found some extremely nice mini ciabatta buns....

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. This lunch is a bit of a story.
Yesterday I went to find a replacement battery for my watch. The old guy who runs the shop was missing but a woman to whom he is probably unfortunate enough to be married was in the shop shouting into her mobile phone. It must have been an important call, she didn’t want to stop for a customer. There was some sign language and a grunting sound that might have been ‘battery’ and she took my watch. I went around the corner to buy something else, returning a short while later. Yes, you did click on the Lunch thread, all will become clear and there are even pictures for those who struggle with script.
Back at the watch shop the woman shoved my watch back under the sheets of clear plastic that keep her safe from Covid. I put the required B150 on the counter next to my watch, it is a basic analogue Seiko with a day and a date window, and it was immediately apparent that the ‘day’ was not showing. I tried to adjust it but there was no response. As I did this madam grabbed the notes and walked away. I called her back, more easily said than done when someone a few feet away wants to pretend you don’t exist. Words were spoken. The watch was like that when you brought it in. No it wasn’t. Yes it was. No it wasn’t. Yes it was. Impasse. Her daughter chanced to arrive, a pleasant young woman with good English and we agreed that I’d leave my watch with her until her father returned to check it.
With nothing else to do, I walked over to the very small farmers’ market that opens a couple of days each week. Today it was open. There is a stall run by a woman who sells avocadoes, she has a pretty face and speaks some English. I noticed her last week, this was a chance to find out more about her. I started with the cunning ploy of purchasing some avocadoes. I had two large, firm fruit bagged up and paid for when there was a harridan's cry from far up the street, it seemed that my attendance was required back at the watch shop. Conversation with Miss Avocado was interrupted, maybe next week.
The boss had returned to the watch shop and quickly fixed whatever his wife had done to my watch. I returned home, weighed down by the large avocadoes and the thoughts of what might have been.
Today I was looking at the avocadoes and next to them a loaf of home-baked bread, recently purchased from the home of the woman who bakes such things.

I am might be two generations too old to have ever bought a smashed avocado toast. Maybe I am still a hipster at heart. Toast, with avocado. How hard could it be?
The Internet is great for some things. If, for example, you want a recipe for avocado and toast you can find about a thousand of them. Which is not very helpful, really. I chose one which mentioned feta cheese because I still had a morsel of that in the fridge after the Buffalo thread.

Smashed Avocado Poached Egg Toast Recipe | Yummly

I found I had no lemons as the recipe required but, having told someone on TD recently I had never seen limes here I then found these things in Makro labelled in English as limes and I suspect they might actually be limes. So I had lime juice and feta and seasoning and some avocado.

    Lunch ... the second course-avo4-jpgLunch ... the second course-avo3-jpgLunch ... the second course-avo2-jpg

    Time to get smashing.

    Lunch ... the second course-avo5-jpg

Maybe it is just me. After a few minutes my avocado was barely smashed at all. Perhaps it would be easier if it were very ripe. Unwilling to abandon the project I reached for the big guns. That made the whole business of smashing avocado with feta and juice and seasoning a whole lot quicker.

    Lunch ... the second course-avo6-jpg

It was a small step now to get the smash onto the toast.

    Lunch ... the second course-avo7-jpg

And finally, poached eggs to top it off. Of course, the whole smashing business had taken much longer than expected so the eggs were well past their runny best. It was what it was.

    Lunch ... the second course-avo8-jpg

Just as I was taking that last shot I was surprised by a loud thump. A few feet away on the inside of the kitchen windowsill was the Olive-backed sunbird that I have been hoping to see again. It must have come in through the open front doors and taken a straight line for the kitchen window which, unfortunately, was closed. Before I could get the picture it cheeped and took off out of the front doors. Maybe word was getting around that smashed avocado on toast was today's menu.

The recipe says a total of 15 minutes. It took me 35 minutes. No surprises, I am a bit linear, one task at a time, most recipes I triple the alleged preparation time. Add another 20 minutes to wash up afterwards. Nearly an hour of my life. If I ever think of eating this again it will definitely be at a restaurant.
How was it? It was okay. I have some improvement ideas. Next time I’ll eat the avocado straight out of the shell with a piece of toast on the side.
Also, I need to get back to that market before the avocado season ends: unfinished business.

Keep the avocado next to a ripe banana for a day or two. (I think they help ripen them)

^ I've heard that bananas make any fruit ripen fast and so you should keep them in a separate bowl.

And I also thought that avocados with poached eggs on toast was something that only hipsters eat... so what do I know?

Today it was pla chon for lunch. This was the juvenile that ambushed me in the kitchen and almost took a finger off.

If I don't include the cost of building the pond, the cost of buying pla nin for this pla chon to eat (and the cost of the pellets to feed the pla nin with), the cost of buying this pla chon's parents at the market, the mental cost of spending the past 2 years trying to catch it's parents, the cost of 20 truck loads of water and finally the 8000 Baht cost of having my left big toe nail gouged out by a doctor, then this lunch was effectively free.
