Restaurants in Thailand that the food you ate was spectacular?

Over the years,I've come to expect the food in many restaurants to be just average.

The only time I was really wowed by the food, was in Koh samui back in 1987,every meal I ate was a delight to eat, even though it took the owner about 1.5 hours to prepare/present.

I can honestly say, when going out now I much rather eat at home had some decent Breakfasts though they are in farang style pubs.

    Only pertains to Farang fare?

    Well....that's depressing and predictable.

Rather than such a pointless snipe, why not give us a Thai restaurant or two that fits the bill?

TBH, there are so many good restaurants in Thailand that I find it difficult to respond. I could possibly be more helpful if you narrow down the range, in terms of where and what price bracket.
I can easily, say, laud the excellent seafood buffet at Lord Jims in the Oriental- but I must point out, you'd be hard put to find a buffet that expensive in Australia. Especially given wine prices.
There is many a good Thai sitting out there that is cheap, reliable and basically nameless- unless you read Thai. But they come and go like the wind, so that old fave next to XYZ market may not be there anymore.

Anyway, Meeting Point on the Darkside is cheap, cheerful, and pushes out consistently good German grub. You really can't go wrong with their Continental cold cuts breakfast at 145bht or so- It's massive, and good. But don't expect luxurious surroundings, or silver service.

Sabang, just had a quick look at Lord Jims buffet, looks good, though 2,650 baht not an everyday type of place to eat, well not on my budget anyway.

I was mostly referring to casual dining on a day to day basis.

What was the name of the place?

And are you talking merely Thai hole in the wall restaurants here?

BCP, or Breakfast Club of Pattaya is a pretty good Facebook site (especially if you like English breakfasts!). But it's up to date, and real time- ie done by local expats, with a firm eye on the dollar. You'll get some good ideas there, although they won't be much use if you're in Phuket.

Just average prices your happy to pay for on a day to day basis.

Just came back from what is supposed to be a good restaurant in Mukdahan, and its was no better than average home cooked meal, packed with Thais

And got talking to my GF and asked her when was the last time you had a meal that you really remembered that was really good, she said about 10 years ago.

I thought it was just me being an arsehole and food snob.

Though i must admit i mainly eat Thai food when here.

It would be cool to see how you cook for yourself due to most Thai restaurants being average, chef.

CS you may find because of the number of restaurants now in Thailand and the shortage of experienced Chefs, maybe that is the reason for the food being mediocre, though that's just my opinion.

An average joe, cooking now doesn't have the love for cooking,or the ones that do will be working in the better establishments, that Sabang posted before.

A similar named restaurant in Ubon called "The home" food can be good at times and then mediocre at other times, that's the problem I find here the consistency, though a little pricey for day to day eating.

The food at Cabbages n Condoms on Pratamnak Hill can best be described as uninspiring and mediocre for the price, pretty standard fare really- but given that view, the beautiful garden surroundings, and equally beautiful fawning waitstaff, you'll still walk away smiling. It won't blow your rectum off either, falang.

For more up to date Thai choices at street level prices, you'll find quite a few on BCP- while amusing yourself about the morbid fascination with English breakfast. They even argue about the beans.

Best advice I had in the early days was it's a definite must to visit but eat before you go there.

PS: Much like that rotating thing on Pty Tower.

Yup, the only time I eat Thai is from her kitchen, and to keep it tidy that's my wife not yours.

Never been able to get a table at this place when in CM. Seems to be booked solid days / weeks in advance.

Think I booked something like a month ahead of time. They absolutely follow up on bookings, think I had to confirm at least one time that yes, I really, really was going....
