^ In production code those software bugs become features...

The level of automation is such that too many forget how to fly the plane without it.

Its usually salmon, poached or smoked, besides the red wine is so rough you don't have taste buds left to worry. No worse than chicken sausages...

I don't usually eat sundown to sun-up. Anyway, last night...

What did you have on the plane?-img_20191231_000032-jpg

I may not eat after the sun sets, but I said nothing about drinking.

Well... I had meatballs, mash and soggy beans on the way out.

On the return leg (BRS-AMS-BKK) I had.... meatballs, mash with bits in and green mush...

They must eat a lot of meatballs in Holland, cos that's all that KLM serve. And I can assure you that it tasted an awful lot worse than it looked!

And... if you think that looks bad...

Breakfast was... well, even after stupidly trying some, I was still none the wiser! I think it was a kind of reconstituted scrambled egg on the right with tomato sauce in the middle. No idea what the yellow thing on the left was. My daughter wouldn't touch it, and for once I really couldn't blame her. There's no way any human could 'learn to like' this crap. It looked like something an ulcerating cat had coughed up.

I realise that you're never gonna get a good meal in economy, but if this is the best KLM can come up with, why not just dispense with offering a 'meal' altogether and give the option of buying something edible?

Business and first class dining options aren't what they use to be either.
Dependent greatly on the particular carrier, as all things differ.

Some remain top notch [the usual classy airlines] and others have embarrassingly faltered.
Cutting back and policies trimmed, reflective of the real economic situations the world over.

Austrian Airways is the best I've had.

It was in business class but a chef comes to greet you in his whites and explains the menu.

I did Thai economy at Xmas. Fuckin chicken sausage for breakfast.

For dinner they ran out of chicken and only had Pork left. Good old Thais...Wonder if there were any hungry Muslims on that flight

Now that Covid is releasing it's grip and travel becoming easier I thought it time to revive Hal's thread.

I flew Turkish yesterday and it wasn't too bad. Metal cutlery as well, which is becoming a rarity when flying economy on European airlines these days.

    My first flight... before...

    And after... look, no spoon!

For the serious airline cutlery collector, this is the point where you have to remember to transfer any booty from your pockets to your carry on bag. No knives or forks either... but spoons and blankets (for the serious collector) are OK. I've previously discovered to my embarrassment that airport metal detectors 'beep' at pocketed spoons.

But once the threat of airport security stations has been removed, the serious collector can go for it.

    My second flight... before...

    And after...

Oh, and a bonus breakfast. Before...

    And after...

All in all, a successful journey. Anyone got any swaps?

    What are you drinking today?

Sadly true. I used to do the odd upgrade to BA First class using air miles, for one main culinary reason. Scrambled eggs done right, with caviar for breakfast! But last time I did it (Singapore- Sydney) I was told they no longer offered caviar. So full English it was, just OK. M'ehh.

Worst meal I had on a plane was Jetstar, business class- do not confuse Jetstar business class with actual business class please, you will be devastated. JS is a shit airline, whose sole saving grace is that it is cheap- and a great baggage allowance in 'business'. Otherwise, don't do it. Anyway, I ordered the lentil salad for my meal- it was so awful I refuse to even review it. If you like cold lentils with the consistency of bullets, maybe you would review it. 'Business class' brekkie was a slightly stale croissant with cheap jam. I really don't like Jetstar. Oh, and your ticket will not even allow you entrance to the Qantas business class lounge- so my 6 hour layover on a cold, rainy Melbourne day was really no fun.

We always buy snacks and protein bars to bring with us. regardless of the airline the food is always bad at best. IMO
One thing I don't understand is why the moment they get on a plane they expect to be feed, even on flights that are four hours long. Don't you go for four hours without food at home? so why can't you on a plane?
Air travel has become so competitive ,profit margins are razor thin. In some countries labor is cheap, and goverment subsidies are high and airlines from there are more capable to offer some extras in their service.
In the US labor costs are high, and goverment subsidies non existent, very difficult for them to complete with the likes of Qatar air who work under a different business model.
We flew to Greece last week with Qatar air. Bkk to Doha about 6 hours and Doha to Athens a bit more than 4 hours. We ate before departing BKK, had our own snacks, (Nuts, granola , and protein bars) , so we really did not even try their food.
We were thinking we will eat something during our layover at Doha but we were no hungry. Doha to Athens they served breakfast (scrambled eggs and sausage) , how can you screw that up, so we had some.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

One breakfast I always avoid on flights - they always screw it up.

Most often with the dreaded chicken sausage, especially on the gulf airlines. And eggs were just never meant to be made for 500 people and put in a polystyrene box.

^^ You're right BB, you don't go into a posh restaurant expecting to be transported across the world!

I think everyone prepares with sandwiches or acouple of pork pies before a flight these days, but the fact is, some airlines can still serve edible food while others just serve up slop.

And btw I had scrambled egg and chucken sausages for my SHA breakfast today... it ain't fool-proof!

That's exactly what I had. No way you can screw up the chicken sausage, it is screwed up by definition. I did not have much of it, I took a bite and put it back. I ate the eggs and the croissant with butter.

I think the only relationship the "chicken" sausage has with chickens is that of the name, and some chicken byproducts LOL
ohh and perhaps the tuck that was transporting it, drove by some chickens on it's way to the unholy place that makes them.
I think Chucken is a much better name.

I do not eat airplane food except on very very rare occasions in business class. I bring my own small snacks in case I might get hungry. I honestly seldom eat very much on a plane. I do not like too being I know I am going to sit for many many hours and not move. I prefer to fast.

Hey Mendy. I still have your Singapore Airlines spoon. PM where you want me to mail it.

    ^ PM sent!

Stumps, would you like a Turkish Airline spoon in return?

To be honest I'll be interested to see whether the Singapore business class spoons are different to economy (and I appreciate that may sound a bit sad). I know that they are for many airlines. I don't suppose you managed to get a blanket as well?

The jewel in my collection is a business class Finair blanket... it's a proper quilted affair that Dan likes to sleep on in the winter.

On Monday night I flew from Suvarnabhumi to Oslo with Qatar Airways. The first leg to Qatar on an A380 was the usual torture, but the second leg from Doha to Oslo on a Dreamliner was the best flight I've had in a long time... almost enjoyable. I think the Dreamliner is one of the nicest planes to fly on in Economy at the moment.

But the main thing that made this flight enjoyable was a certain Qatar Airways steward. He asked what I'd like to drink and I requested a gin and tonic. He said "shall I make it a double?", to which I replied, "you can make it a treble if you like!". He gave me two doubles... and also asked if he should keep them coming... no answer needed.

I mainly seem to fly KLM at the moment and my usual drink request is two bottles of red wine, to which the unfailing answer is, "sorry Sir, we can only serve one drink at a time". And then I get dirty looks from the aging stewardesses for the rest of the flight. You'd think they were paying for the drinks out of their own pocket.

The Qatar food was not bad either... beef stew with a kind of chocolate mouse with crumble on top... a chocolate crumble? The spoon took some wiping before I pocketed it, mind you.

I had my third g&t during dinner tray collection and was just settling down when my steward friend brought me the fourth double with a couple of bags or pretzels. I almost felt guilty about 'collecting' his cutlery.

I had a couple more doubles during my first movie... Dunkirk. This made me think about how much work I have to do with the daughter in the UK this summer. She may be able to speak Thai with a smattering of Mandarin, eat bugs and identify several species of Thai snake but she has absolutely no idea about what 'Dunkirk' means, nor Trafalgar and HMS Victory for that matter. That's the trouble with these inter-racial marriages. I have a lot of work to do.

I finished off the flight with a couple more doubles with Goldfinger. That's Pussy Galore talking to James Bond.

I was half pished by the time I de-boarded at Oslo... the way it should be.

The A380 is invariably only half - 2/3 full so you can usually get a row of 4 it you ask at check -in and are flying cattle. The Qatar sandwich / breakfast roll is a travesty but yes their alcohol supply is usually OK.

I much preferred the Dreamliner 787 flight and not just because of the half bottle of gin. The A380 flight was full and cramped. I've found before that the Dreamliner offers more leg room and is just a more comfortable aircraft, for me anyway.
